Festival of India alters stereotypes
Celebration highlights the uniqueness and troubles of Indian culture
By David Cohen Assistant News Editor Mother and daughter take in the 16th annual Fesitval of India, held at Steven Point Area Senior High on Saturday. On Saturday, the 16th annual Festival of India was held at Stevens Point Area Senior High School (SPASH.) The event was set to occur near Oct. 2 in honor of Mahatma Gandhi's birthday. Ron Strege, Director of Multicultural Affairs and speaker at the event says that the purpose of the Festival is two-fold. He believes that Stevens Point is very fortunate to have the Chanders holding the festival here as "there is so much to learn about the different kind of people around us. It is important to gain a better knowledge of as many cultures as possible so that you understand why people have the perspectives that they do and make the decisions that they do based on their backgrounds." Strege, who is also a member of the SHAMA board, says that alongside education, the festival is designed to raise money for SHAMA's charitable projects for India. Primary among these is the creation of scholarships for women in India, who without an education are forced to turn to lives of prostitution. Funds also support the school they attend, and promote reproductive health. The event also has resources for attendants to sponsor an Indian child or village.

What are you using to teach geography? In The Ultimate Geography and Timeline Guide How does one keep on track with teaching when one is organizationally challenged? I could attempt to inspire you with biblical principles and great quotes and examples regarding planning ahead. I could set before you lofty goals. I could even try and make you feel guilty for not being better organized. (Although with my own reputation for using a shovel to clear off my desk, who would take me seriously?) But that is not my purpose.
1. Plan. 2. Consolidate Teaching Time. 3. Choose Your Time Wisely. Know your students, yourself, and your household. When would be most productive? Personally, I could care less about Alexander the Great at 8:00 a.m. but find him truly fascinating later in the day! 4. Bedtime Bonus. One ritual that was consistent in our home when the boys were younger was our evening bedtime stories. We often used compelling history books or books with science topics during this special time. 5. The National Council for the Social Studies identifies 10 themes in social studies. The one that relates to Geography (III) is called "People, Places and Environment." The guide further provides eleven "Performance Expectations" in this area and gives three examples of how a lesson might be constructed to achieve some of these objectives.
In one example, a teacher reads an account of the monsoon from the perspective of the people of India. Although elsewhere in the guide, social studies teachers are encouraged to take a less directive and active role in instruction, here the teacher uses direct instruction.
Would it be more interesting to the students to contact another student in India during the monsoon season and obtain a variety of reactions/description of the impact on the people from an Indian viewpoint? Would it be more meaningful, challenging? Would the results be more likely to be "integrated" and would the student be more likely to feel he/she is an active participant in the educational process?

    OSAT - A Short History
This brief sketch of One Step At A Time provides information on how we got started and why we're organized as both a club and an AA group . In its five years of existance, OSAT has developed a rich tradition of annual events including the club's Mount Rainier climbs. In recent years, members have organized major international climbing expeditions . Also recently, OSAT has developed a more formal organization . This page is one of three providing historical information about OSAT. Links are provided here to the other two, which describe more background about our identity traditions and a biographical sketch of our founder.
    Founding!
One Step at a Time was founded in 1991. The group was conceived of and organized by Jim H. . Jim was a recovering alcoholic, with twelve years of sobriety at that time. He had found mountaineering to be a healthy and satisfying passion which he felt was important to his own recovery, and began to envision how he could weave his mountaineering interest into a way of fulfilling the twelfth step in the Alcoholics Anonymous regimen. In 1990 Jim began to formulate the idea of holding an AA meeting on the summit of Mount Rainier in conjunction with the national AA convertion which was held in Seattle that year. The amount of planning and training required conspired to prevent this dream from being realized. The following year, however, Jim brought together a small group of experienced mountaineers with a larger group of people interested in learning about mountain climbing. What these people had in common was a self-acknowledged alcohol dependency and a desire to stop drinking. Some had been sober for years, others for just weeks, but they all sought the mutual support and individual learning provided by AA.

    The Renaissance and the Reformation
The influence of the Catholic Church on European culture in the late Middle Ages cannot be overestimated. It permeated every aspect of culturescholarship, politics, economics, and even one's private life. The periods of time following the Middle Ages are known as the Renaissance and the Reformation, and these periods stand out as a time of cultural change with respect to the Church. The Renaissance saw the re-introduction of Greek and Roman thought in intellectual circles, and as a result the Church had to compete with the philosophies, literature, and the paganism of ancient Greece and Rome. The Reformation was an effort to reform the Church itself and return it to the ways of the original Christians. The Renaissance was an intellectual re-awakening, while the Reformation was a religious re-awakening. In both cases the authority of the Catholic Church was diminished, and this change had a significant impact on how Western civilization viewed the body.
Different theories of how one should view the human body were developed during the Renaissance and the Reformation, and as a consequence the groundwork was laid for different attitudes toward sport and physical education. The Renaissance was heavily influenced by the classics, especially the philosophies of Aristotle and Plato, and these arguments were adopted by the humanists.

The research is pursued from a social history - not medical - perspective. Belfast History
Within this a number of other projects have developed or are at the embryonic stage. The development of a British and Irish Labour and social history class, spearheaded by the TGWU Irish region is due to begin in the summer, also the debate is taking place around the establishment of a peoples centre for history, possibly in what is currently the HQ of the TGWU in Belfast. The idea is to democratise history in a way which has never been done in the North before, and it is history, or the lack of understanding of it, that hangs over this country like a shroud. Projects like the ones we have mentioned, would have been impossible 5 years ago, not only impossible, but also dangerous. We are creating a space to allow the past to be reconstructed in a way which is popular and accessible, public history in its best tradition. We welcome any comments on our plans and activites.
