The Perseus Project is an evolving digital library of resources for the study of the ancient world and beyond. Collaborators initially formed the project to construct a large, heterogeneous collection of materials, textual and visual, on the Archaic and Classical Greek world. Planning for Perseus began in 1985; the project was formally established in July, 1987. Since then, the Perseus Project has published two CD-ROMs and created the on-line Perseus Digital Library. Recent expansion into Latin texts and tools and Renaissance materials has served to add more coverage within Perseus and has prompted the project to explore new ways of presenting complex resources for electronic publication.

    http://www.winchesterhistoricalsociety.org/BHB5_fall02.html
Black Horse Bulletin Volume 28, Number 1 - Ellen Knight, Editor - FALL 2002 A CHILDREN'S HISTORY OF WINCHESTER What started out as a simple request has turned into a large-scale project for the Historical Society. When a first-grade teacher at the Muraco School asked Gail Sjo to speak to her class as part of their study of Winchester history last spring, Gail was curious to know what kinds of materials the teacher was intending to use. The teacher showed her a mimeographed copy of a hand-written booklet called A Children's Early History of Winchester put together by Mildred Alison. Well, Gail had never seen this booklet before nor had the members of the Historical Society board, archives volunteers or the public library director. And discovery of this booklet started a discussion of what resources students and teachers could use to learn about our town's history. What happened next moved us quickly from the discussion stage to action. Ed Delaney, board member and father of an Ambrose School third grader, took home a copy of the booklet ,and it was shown to his daughter's teacher. The teacher told Ed that all the elementary schools were planning to teach a short unit on Winchester History to the 365 third-grade students starting in December or January, which had not been done town-wide in recent years. The teacher asked Ed if she could have a copy of the booklet and a few historical maps for her classroom. Getting the teacher maps was easy, but somehow just recopying the booklet didn't seem like the right thing to do. So first the booklet was typed up into a Word document. Next, pictures and maps started to be inserted, the text was corrected and edited and some new text was added. Currently, the document is in the final stages of formatting and will be off to the printer soon to make a copy for each third grader and extras to sell through the Society and at Book Ends.

Inside Back Cover These lessons have been stepped to help you teach and apply this material to the appropriate grade level for your class. How to Use This Guide The lessons in this guide introduce students to Census 2000 with high-interest, grade-level appropriate activities designed to meet your curricular needs. Students will learn what a census is and why it's important to them, their families, and the community. Lesson planning at a glance-Your Scope and Sequence (on the inside front cover) provides an at-a-glance summary of the lessons in this book. These lessons are designed to support your classroom goals, and are divided into three learning strands: Map Literacy, Community Involvement, and We Count! Managing Data. The Scope and Sequence identifies skills, objectives, wall map national standards, and curriculum areas for each lesson. Map, computer, and library icons allow you to quickly see which lessons interface with the We Count! wall map, and those that Internet offer special enhancements using Internet and library resources. Customized for your classroom-Each lesson in this guide consists of a teacher lesson plan and two reproducible activity pages. Because students in grades 5-8 have attained different degrees of mastery, the lessons in each strand have been stepped (one lesson aimed at grades 5-6; one lesson aimed at grades 7-8), allowing you to tailor your teaching to the individual needs of your students. Before you begin-This teaching guide is based on a unifying concept: The census makes a difference for our community. Before you begin using the lessons, write this concept on the board. Explain that information gathered by the census helps America learn what America needs. Extension Activities-Many lesson plan pages contain one or more Extension Activities designed to enhance students' experience and understanding of the census beyond the classroom. These activities often make use of the vast stores of information available at the official U.S. Census Bureau Web site (see below) and will make it possible to incorporate updated Census 2000 information into lessons. Using the Web site-The U.S. Census Bureau Web site (www.census.gov) is easy to use and can provide students and teachers with a wide variety of information on characteristics of the U.S. population. For example: Starting on the home page, click on "Estimates" under the box labeled "People." In this category, choose "States." Students can work with the data found on screen or the data can be printed out for easier use. In addition, teachers can access the lessons from all three Census 2000 Teaching Guides (K-4, 5-8, and 9-12) on the Census Bureau Web site. The Census 2000 questionnaire may also be viewed on this site.
