    Manuscript Division, Library of Congress
Search by Keyword Name and Subject Index Chronological List In honor of the Manuscript Division's centennial, its staff has selected for online display approximately ninety representative documents spanning from the fifteenth century to the mid-twentieth century. Included are the papers of presidents, cabinet ministers, members of Congress, Supreme Court justices, military officers and diplomats, reformers and political activists, artists and writers, scientists and inventors, and other prominent Americans whose lives reflect our country's evolution. Most of the selected items fall within one of eight major themes or categories which reflect the division's strengths. Each of these themes is the focus of a separate essay containing links to digital reproductions of selected documents. A detailed description accompanies each document, and additional information about the parent collections may be obtained by following links to catalog records and finding aids. The mission of the Library of Congress is to make its resources available and useful to Congress and the American people and to sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations. The goal of the Library's National Digital Library Program is to offer broad public access to a wide range of historical and cultural documents as a contribution to education and lifelong learning.

    Mission Goals
The Museum began as the personal hobby of Paul Stewart, who, as a child playing cowboys and Indians, always had to be the Indian because, "There was no such thing as a Black cowboy." After Mr. Stewart reached adulthood, he met a Black cowboy-a man who had led cattle drives at the turn of the century-and at that time, vowed to unearth all the material he could on other African American W estern Pioneers. So the story begins of one man's search and discovery of a past not recorded in history books. His search has taken him to nearly every corner of the West, gathering personal artifacts, memorabilia, newspapers, legal documents, clothing, letters, photographs, and oral histories. It was this original "Paul Stewart Collection" that formed the nucleus for the Museum which formally began operation in 1971. Today, thanks to the dedicated leadership of an untiring Board of Directors, many community volunteers and corporate supporters, the

Selection We have selected scholarly books and articles on American colonial history that appear to be of continuing interest. Our goal is to add four documents (articles or book chapters) per week. Readers are invited to suggest further public-domain documents for digitization. Contact us Technique We transcribe the text as found in the original. When it is necessary to insert notes of our own, these are bracketed and in red text to distinguish them from bracketed material in the originals. We make minor changes to the layout to enhance readability in the Web environment:
    • Headers are omitted, except for page numbers.
    • Page numbers are included even if blank in the original. They are uniformly in bold text and placed in the upper left corner of the page.
    • Block quotes are indented and in the same size text as the original. (Some of the sources show them unindented and in smaller text.)
