The hippos are all that remain of Escobar's private zoo. In his heyday in the 1980s, Escobar imported elephants, rhinoceroses, lions, giraffes and other exotic beasts to his lavish ranch at Puerto Triunfo, 100 miles north of Bogota in central Colombia, as a testament to his fabulous wealth. Most of the animals were confiscated by the authorities and transferred to zoos after the cocaine lord was gunned down by police in 1993 in Medellin. But the hippos were left behind. Despite the absence of a keeper, the Nile hippos some of which weigh two tonnes have flourished and reproduced on a muddy lake near the Magdalena River as if it were their natural terrain. And for six of the hippos born there, it is. "I've never heard of anything like this in my life," Steve Thompson, a hippo expert at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo, said in a telephone interview. He has travelled to Botswana, Kenya and Tanzania to study the behaviour and life of hippos.

Physical Description Hippos have several peculiarities that set them apart from other mammals. For example, their skin is practically hairless and much thinner than that of other mammals of comparable size. Thin skin dries out easily, which explains why river hippos wallow in mud or lounge in water during daylight hours. Most river hippos have coppery-brown skin, while pygmy hippos are greenish-black. Hippos do not have sweat glands, but they do have pores that secrete a reddish-pink fluid. This fluid gives hippos a glossy sheen and has led to the persistent but mistaken belief that the animals sweat blood. The substance acts as a natural conditioner, preventing the animal’s skin from cracking in the tropical heat. Pygmy hippos secrete a clear liquid for the same purpose. River hippos—unlike pygmy hippos—have a number of special adaptations to life in the water. Their eyes are on the tops of their heads and are set in sockets that bulge upward, keeping the eyes above the waterline when the body is afloat. The nostrils also face upward and can be sealed completely during a dive. River hippos usually stay underwater for less than five minutes, but they are capable of holding their breath for up to half an hour. They can walk or run along the river bottom and can even sleep while submerged. Given that the two species have some common characteristics, the size difference between pygmy and river hippos is startling. Pygmy hippos grow to about 1.75 m (about 5 ft 9 in) long, not including their short tails, and they have a maximum weight of about 275 kg (about 600 lb). Male river hippos can be up to 5 m (more than 16 ft) long, and they can easily be a dozen times heavier than their smaller relatives. In both species the body’s weight is supported on slightly webbed feet that have four hoof-tipped toes, all equally well developed. On land, pygmy hippos can move at a trot, while river hippos normally travel at a ponderous walk. However, if danger threatens, a fully grown river hippo can run 30 km/h (about 18 mph) for a few hundred yards—about as fast as an Olympic sprinter.

Two nights, four bone-jarring game drives, one man with a spear, and approximately eight zillion animals after arriving, we left the Mara and headed to Lamu, a small island in the Indian Ocean, just south of the Somali border. Lamu is the oldest town on the coast, and is generally considered the archetype of Swahili culture. The streets in Lamu are never more than a meter wide, restricting the island's two cars to driving along the waterfront. All other transportation is by boat, foot, or donkey. Electricity has come only recently to Lamu, and is remains just an occasional visitor. On both nights of our visit, the power failed, forcing us to rely on the hotel's generator and, when the gas ran out, on candles. Lamu also had the first mosquitos we had seen on the trip, and coastal mosquitos carry a form of malaria against which our Egyptian prophylaxis were useless.
Ryan-Silva Third-World Travel Tip #2,677: If you must hunt down mosquitos that have found their way into your mosquito netting, try to do so with the benefit of electric light.

What is The Hippolotofus?
We originally "met" on a hippos mailing list at OneList.com (which soon became egroups.com, which was then purchased by Yahoo), in early 1999. We came together because of our common interest in hippos. As we have grown, our activities have expanded to include an annual convention, numerous regional get-togethers, the Hippo Holiday Exchange, hippo projects and more. Who are The Hippolotofus? There are over 500 of us. We range in age from 9 to 90. We live in all parts of the globe, and speak many languages. You must speak some English to participate in our list, but English is not the native language for many of our members. Some have been collecting for years, and have thousands of hippos. Others may have just started, and only have a few. We are legal assistants, work-at-home moms, business people, students, retired people, engineers...we are hippo lovers! SA BIRDING HOME PAGE

The Linyanti and Kwando Rivers
The Kwando and Linyanti Rivers are situated mid-way between the town of Kasane and the Okavango Delta in northern Botswana. The Kwando River has its headwaters in central Africa and flows south before it changes course by ninety degrees to flow towards the northeast. At this point it changes its name to the Linyanti River. The river changed course dramatically because of "river capture" caused by faulting. The Linyanti River follows the fault line representing the extreme south-western extension of east Africa's great Rift Valley. The Rift Valley faulting is relatively recent and cuts across the older Kwando / Savuti Channel, causing the river to change direction - and stops the water from flowing down into the Savuti Channel. Wildlife viewing in this region is superb. It is renowned for large concentrations of elephant, lion, sable, roan, hippos, wild dog etc, building to a peak in the dry winter months. The area offers superb birding year round. Over 450 species of birds have been recorded in the area. A minimum 2 to 3 day stay is recommended. Specials
Swamp Boubou Brown Firefinch Pel's Fishing Owl Schalow's Lourie ... Arnot's Chat Habitats
Habitats can be divided into; Riverine woodlands along the Kwando and Linyanti Rivers; The rivers themselves and surrounding lagoons and waterways; Open grasslands bordering onto the rivers and down the Savuti Channel; The dryer woodlands inland from the waterways.

A breathtaking adventure and thrilling suspense in Krüger National Park The law of the jungle: the strongest win and can claim their rights, with or without justice. It is always a question about life or death. In this kind of world is it no mercy!
When I was travelling around in Krüger National Park in South Africa in 1995, I saw some brutal kills from lions and cheetahs. We also read about a mother and her child became eaten by lions when they tried to cross the border from Mozambique to South Africa. Their remains were found in Krüger, which is a popular route for people who try to enter South Africa illegally.
The lions look so nice when they are resting in the sun, but I can ensure you; don't take any chances to go near them or try to touch them. It will be your last move!

http://www.lettersfromafrica.org/dir/subjects/hippos.html
AFRICAN HIPPOS
The hippo is the world's third largest land mammal. Hippo's live in central, southern, and western Africa. The word hippopotamus comes from two Greek words meaning river horse. In Malawi, hippo's are called mvuu. They can stay under water for as long as six minutes. In some places in Malawi, hippo's come at night and eat people's gardens. Therefore, most Malawian farmers dislike the hippo. We found a story about hippo's if you would like to read it.
Here, farmers along the Shire River show a park ranger evidence of hippo damage to their gardens. It is illegal for Malawians to kill wild animals. If a wild animal is causing damage to crops, a farmer may contact the Office of Parks and Wildlife to investigate. Problem animals are killed by park rangers.
Hippos
, a very territorial and agressive animal, are responsible for more human deaths than any other animal in Africa. By day, you are likely to see hippos mostly submerged in the water of local rivers, ponds and lakes. At night, hippos come out of the water to graze on vegetation.
