With crocodiles and hippos lurking in the water, a mokoro ride is not as relaxing as it might seem... Gliding between the water lilies on a warm afternoon, sitting in a low mokoro canoe navigating the channels of papyrus and reeds through the Okavango Delta - this boat ride was, as the brochure promised, infinitely relaxing. At least, it was until a crocodile shot out of the water from underneath us, just inches away from my right knee.

Golf in the Wild - Kruger National Park, South Africa
Imagine this ....you have just hit off on the opening par 4 hole and about to play your second shot when right before your line of sight a giraffe has its legs spread bending down to drink from the water hazard on the adjacent hole. This is followed by a group of vervet monkeys running through the sprinklers nearby. You're playing golf in Africa, mate!..."Golf in the Wild" Giraffe and golfers share the course! These many unique experiences are some of the many delightful attractions of playing golf in and around Kruger National Park located in the north east corner of South Africa. Golf in the Wild offers "game within a game", combining two of South Africa's most appealing features.
Among the variety of animals seen on two of the five golf courses included in the 11 day tour are the resident hippos in the water hazards and groups of the comical plump wart hogs who trot away in a line with their little curly tails stuck high in the air.

The Big Five and the Indulgent Five
Generations of the intrepid and the well-traveled have ventured to South Africa for its astonishing variety of wild game. In years prior, European nobility came to hunt and kill. In our era of heightened awareness of endangered species, animal lovers and nature lovers come from all over the world to view game: not as they are viewed in a zoo, but as they engage in their daily activities. You watch the animals bathe and feed, play with and court one another, fight and tease one another, take catnaps (pardon the pun) and search for their next meal. If you are lucky, you may follow a pride of lions as they engage in a strategic hunt. Every visitor - by virtue of his visit alone - lends support to the urgency of conservation in Africa. South Africa, with its intact eco-systems and its wide range of animal life and bird life, is in the forefront of world conservation efforts. This has been achieved through a joint venture of the government and the private game reserves, whose mission is two-fold: · to engage in conservation and re-population efforts. · to allow their (human) guests the opportunity to safely live with the game at close-hand in a way that is respectful and non-threatening. South Africa boasts impressive numbers of the "Big Five" (so-named by hunters who considered them the five most challenging types of prey): lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard. Beyond the glamorous Big Five, South Africa also offers an amazing diversity of other animal life: zebras, giraffe, cheetahs, hippos, wild dogs, whales and dolphins, 700 species of birds and countless species of butterflies.

Craft And hippos Are Our Diamonds Now Caprivi, Namibia, wildlife, elephant, rhino, crocodile, wild dog, lion, leopard, cheetah, predators, mammals, giraffe

SITE MAP WILDLIFE NEWS WildNet Africa News Archive "Craft and hippos are our diamonds now." (28 April, 1999) Twenty years ago the Caprivi was Namibia's richest wildlife area. Apart from elephant, rhino, hippo, crocodile, wild dog, lion, leopard, cheetah and other predators, it was also the habitat for 22 species of hoofed mammals, including giraffe, eland, roan, sable, buffalo, blue wildebeest, impala and kudu. Today numbers of all these species have decreased while some have disappeared altogether, mostly due to uncontrolled hunting and the loss of habitat. The black rhino, for instance, is now extinct in the Caprivi, while giraffe and wildebeest are no longer found in eastern Caprivi. In the past, wildlife played an important role in indigenous African people's cultural heritage since both wild animals and plants made significant contributions to their traditional economies. This changed during the colonial era when elitist and protectionist nature conservation policies resulted in the alienation of African people from wildlife, while also creating hostility to conservation authorities. Modern education and values, which until recently did not recognise wild animals as a valuable economic resource, also contributed to the general belief that wildlife conservation was in opposition to rural development in communal areas. In spite of this, wildlife based enterprises have become major generators of foreign exchange by annually attracting large numbers of tourists wishing to hunt big game or simply to see wild animals in their natural habitats. Because of past discriminatory legislation the rural people who live with the wild animals on communal land have received little benefit from the booming tourism industry. A Namibian non-governmental organisation, Integrated Rural Development and Nature Conservation, was launched in the late 1980's, first in the Kunene region and later in Caprivi with the specific aim of changing the status quo to the benefit of rural communities.

Research Archaeozoology Archaeozoology is the identification, analysis and interpretation of animal remains from archaeological sites. Dor is ideal for the diachronic study of the changes of foodways and other uses of animal resources in an urban, Mediterranean maritime environment, and comparison with other economies.
The appearance of domestic animals and their changing numbers in various periods offer information on the shifts in diet and other forms of animal exploitation.
Sheep and goat were the most common sources of meat, but there is some evidence for animals grown mainly for milk and wool, especially in later periods. Similarly, some of the cattle bones show minor deformations attributable to their use in tillage and transport, beyond their main use for beef. Remains of domestic pigs, dogs, camels, horses and donkeys are also found.
Wild species are relatively rare at Dor - hunting was not a major food source. However, large quantities of fish bones were recovered. A detailed study of these may yield insights into ancient fishing techniques, methods of curing and conserving fish (there is possible evidence for long-distance trade in Nile perch, for instance), and changes in the Mediterranean ecosystem.
One form of secondary exploitation is the manufacture of bone tools. Some of these are utilitarian and others ornamental - incised

A wet and wild African escapade Emily Cheah is a fun-loving 13-year-old who spends most of her time trying to find ways to minimise studying and the only writing she normally does is for school assignments. But after her escapade to Africa, she feels she wants to tell the world about her holiday. She lives in Petaling Jaya with a large assortment of fish, parrots, birds, dogs and miscellaneous humans. By Emily Cheah
I almost could not believe I was going to Africa. Sure, my mother kept showing me pictures of the places she had booked weeks before the flight. It never hit me that I was in Africa until the plane touched down and my journey into the Dark Continent officially began. I resolved to capture as much of the memories as possible in my head and also with the handy digital camera that I was given as the official photographer for the family. I didn’t keep a journal but after coming home, I decided to pen down my thoughts on my most memorable holiday ever… Day of arrival: Oh, don’t worry… I don’t freeze to death yet. That’s why I’m still here and writing this. We wait around in Johannesburg International Airport for three hours. In the meantime, I witness my first ever African sunrise. Seriously! It looks like the one in the Lion King! It’s gorgeous! Even if you are sitting in the middle of an airport. I tried to take pictures of it but proved hard with all the solid steel holding the building up they had in the way and the glass which was a barrier. In the end I settled for a Malaysia Airlines advertisement… I took the perfect picture. The wing of an MAS plane with its logo on it in next to the orangey rising sun.

But, wild hippos always look round and lazy! That s probably because,in the wild, they have little to fear from anything but man.
http://www.weeonesmag.com/july/weeones/body/wee2.html
The first European explorers to Africa returned to Ancient Greece telling of a fabulous creature they called a 'river horse', or, in Greek ‘Hippos potamus’. It’s nothing like a horse, though. It’s more closely related to the pig. The hippopotamus is found in the wild only in Africa, although fossil remains have been found in Europe and India. The Greeks only needed to travel as far as the mouth of the River Nile to find hippos. An adult weighs almost 3 tons, and must eat 90 pounds of grass per day. Its skin is very thick, and produces a sticky red substance to provide protection from the sun ... which, from a distance, makes it look as if it's sunburnt.
Found only in Africa, hippos stay in herds It's found in herds, and cannot move far from water, as it dries out very quickly. It comes ashore to graze at night, and through the day, conserves fluid by immersing itself in water. Only its eyes, ears and nostrils, placed high on the head, break the surface. It can remain underwater for almost 30 minutes, but prefers to surface after a few minutes. It moves underwater by running along the riverbed, rather than swimming.

Odile at Nine Months Old
on the Left of Her Mother Abe Caring Hand In Zimbabwe's Wilderness
Ron Crittall meets a woman to whom hippos, threatened and abandoned during the drought of 1991/92 owe their lives. It was dusk, Karen Paolillo sat on the banks of the now flowing Turgwe River, in south-east Zimbabwe, talking to the pod of hippos grouped attentively in the water below. "Here my guys. Bobby, come on, my boy. Come on, Bob. You see how calm they are? There's no fear there - that's fabulous - you would never have got that a year ago." The previous day we had an indication of how special these hippos are, when they clambered out of the water on to an island in our presence. Hippos may be large but they are timid when in the presence of humans. Their standard reaction is to get in not out of their patch of water, and submerge. But these hippos owe their lives to Karen. They have learned to trust each other during the last three years since the drought which hit Zimbabwe in the 1991/92.

Happy a Territorial Bull The Trust of the Turgwe Hippos Back in 1992 Care for the Wild International received an urgent and alarming fax from Karen Paolillo in Zimbabwe. Could we help save the lives of a herd of hippos whose river was drying up during a terrible drought that had devastated much of the country? In response CFTWI funded the creation of a permanent water pan which saved the lives of the hippos and many other species in the area. Food was also provided to help the animals through the worst of the drought. By Karen Paolillo Sitting on the banks of the Turgwe river the piping whistle of water dikkops rings in my ears, the hippos semi-submerged expel air in soft gasps. A crocodile slowly pulls itself upon a sunning rock. At times like this, it is hard to recall the severity of the 1991/92 drought. Yet memories should never be extinguished, and experience gained must be stored for future use. With each day spent with the Turgwe hippos, my mind is strengthened by a commitment I have made to them, as well as an obligation to all who helped me with sponsoring during the drought. Once one becomes involved in an animal's existence, it is not something one easily walks away from. In addition to my behavioral study, I formed in October of 1994 the Turgwe Hippo Trust. Three trustees and myself feel morally bound not to allow the demise of the Turgwe hippos. In the lowveld of Zimbabwe, over 2,000 hippos used to reside, now just 350 remain. All Turgwe hippos live within a protected conservancy, so a realistic future for them is in the cards. The Trust has many aims, but one main objective is to use human intervention to eliminate the risk of the hippos total extinction from this lowveld land. We hope to build two more emergency pans, like the one sponsored by CFTWI, as well as adding a borehole in the area to supply water in the event of another severe drought.
