Hippo Facts
Basic Hippo Information
The Common Hippo (HIPPOPOTAMUS AMPHIBIUS)
The common hippo is now confined to mainland Africa south of the Sahara although its distribution is much more restricted than it was only a few decades ago. The distribution and numbers of hippos are considered in Chapters 10-12. Five subspecies of Hippopotamus have been recognised based on skull shape and proportions (Grubb,1993)
but it is not certain that these represent anything more than a classification of museum specimens. There may well be geographical variations in skull features but they are not obvious in the field as most of the alleged differences are relative. Hippos are split up into a number of separate populations which probably differ genetically but whether or
not they constitute separate subspecies is largely a matter of opinion. It is important for conservation reasons, however, to preserve these gene pools, whatever they are called. Although no field biologist recognises hippo subspecies nowadays, their names and distributions are given below for the sake of completeness. The availability of modern
DNA fingerprinting techniques could help to disentangle the relationships but, as far as I know, the method has not yet been used with hippos.

Hippos: The Hippopotamus Intro Pygmy Hippopotamus Name: Hippopotamus amphibius Mass: 3000 to 4500 kg Height: 5 ft at shoulder Range: Africa Life Span: 40 years Status: threatened One of the largest four-toed animals, hippos are digitigrades, meaning they walk on their toes. They can reach lengths of 4 m (14ft) and weigh anywhere from 3 - 5 metric tons and stand no higher than 1.5 m (5ft) at the shoulder. These gray or brown hippos excrete oily red drops that look like they are sweating blood. This oily substance helps to protect the skin from ultraviolet rays. They have heavy-set bodies, stocky legs, short tails, and barely any hair. Their nostrils are surrounded by bristly hairs, and are equipped with special flaps that enable them to close their nostrils when they become emerged in water. Hippos have large heads with small eyes and ears, which are located on top of their head. The large mouth contains constantly growing tusk-like incisors and canines, which can grow to about 61cm (24") long and weigh up to 3 kg (6 lbs). Hippos are considered to be pachyderms because of their thick skin, which can get up to two inches thick in some places. These semi aquatic animals are at home in the water and spend most of the day emerged, with only their eyes, ears and nostrils above the surface. Because of their size the hippo is able to sink to the bottom of rivers beds and walk or run along them. They are capable of remaining underwater for up to 25 minutes.

Vacationtechnician personalized luxury adventure travel transports you to the most exquisite wilderness and chill out retreats on Earth. Conserving rare biodiversity through low volume tourism; our aim is your indulgence -at no one's expense. Plan now to be assured a rejuvenating escape at a restful pace -to an unspoilt gem in the purest sense. The Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania is the largest in Africa. It supports an enormous number of animals, including the rare African wild dog and black rhino. It is, in short, the ultimate African wilderness and its very name exudes an air of mystery for lovers of the African bush. However, only one per cent of tourists to Tanzania visit it each year. In January 1917, Captain Frederick Courtney Selous, the prototypal Great White Hunter and writer of popular African hunting yarns, was killed by German fire in the so-called 'Battle for the Bundu', an obscure World War I campaign fought in the remote southern wilderness of what at the time was then German East Africa. A year later, the writer P.H. Lamb trekked to the site where the captain had fallen and was buried. This is what he reported: 'It is a wild inhospitable district, the haunt of a great variety of big game, including elephants, giraffes and rhinos. Not more than four miles away is a warm salt spring running down into a salt lake, where hippos, wild ducks, egrets and numerous other wild fowls abound. But despite these alleviations it can hardly be called a fascinating part of the world, and the object of most people who have seen it will be to avoid it carefully in the future.'

Haunt of the Hippo Saturday, May 15, 6 p.m. ET
In an African oasis, an intricate food chain is fueled by the lives of the mysterious hippos.
Kenya's Mzima Springs erupt from a labyrinth of lava to host a lush oasis where an intricate web of life revolves around massive hippopotamus residents. The 3,000-pound herbivores raise families while fueling a dynamic food chain that stretches from terrapins to crocodiles.
Descended from pig-like forest dwellers, hippos eventually evolved the aquatic lifestyle so central to Mzima's ecosystem. Their movements are graceful as they ease their great bulk through the clear waters, all the while laying a hay-like carpet of dung across the spring floor. The grassy feces provide food for small snails and others, which in turn feed the fish that are a favored meal of the local crocodilians. Even the trees benefit, taking in nutrients through roots thrust into the clear water.
The hippos are rewarded for their digestive generosity, benefiting too from the services of their neighbors. Mzima provides a spa-like environment for these widemouth giants, its freshwater sharks cleaning the hippos' skin in between crevices, toes, and even teeth!

Introduction
Revamping the Nomenclature Camping under Mosquito Netting
The Vagabond
... Adventure Archive DESTINATIONS Revamping the Nomenclature By Doug Lansky John's thick accent (somewhere between Australian, British and mumbling), combined with the distance between our canoes, made for interesting animal spotting. "That's a Stripe-Necked Heron," John would try to tell me in his whispered speech. "What kind?" Chris would shout from the canoe behind. "A Hype-Necked Bherron!" I'd yell to the others, unsure of my pronunciation but unable to clarify without an animal ID book. "It's a High-Pecked Barron!" I'd hear Chris tell the Dutch couple. Doug in the foreground, elephants in the background Throughout the trip, I think we inadvertently renamed nearly every animal we saw. It took quite a while basically the whole trip to get used to sharing the river with large, wild animals, mostly hippos. Despite the fact that hippos look like waterlogged cows, they are responsible for more human deaths than any other animal in Africa. I quickly learned that you don't just paddle past hippos. You have to get past them. The first part of hippo avoidance is locating them. Many hippos were floating in large groups that, from a distance, looked like partially submerged mines. Those were easy to spot. The trick was to find the ones underwater. Hippos are not fond of surprise visitors and if we didn't know where they were, there was a good chance they would surface under our canoe and bite us into anchovy-size pieces, which John reminded us,"is not a good thing."

Hippos have killed more people than any other animal The hippo's yawn is not a sign of sleepiness or boredom but is actually a threat gesture, displaying long, thick, razor-sharp canine teeth, or tusks, with which it is capable of biting a small boat in half. Being fearlessly protective of their turf and young, hippos have killed more than 400 people in Africa - more than any other wild animal. Hippopotamus amphibius means "river horse." The hippo, weighing 1 800 kg (4,000 pounds) and more, lives in Africa, south of the Sahara and along the length of the Nile river, although its range once included Asia and large parts of Europe. Hippos prefer rivers with deep water and nearby reed beds and grasslands, but are also found in salt-water areas near river mouths, and in lakes in Central Africa. They are hoofed vegetarians, feeding on grass, fallen fruit, and occasionally on cultivated crops such as sugar cane or corn during the night. They spend most of the day in the water. The hippo is the third biggest land animals, slightly smaller but heavier than a white rhino (the elephant is the biggest). In spite of its huge size - 3 metres (12 feet) in length, 1,5 metres (five feet) tall, with a mouth measuring a half metre (two feet) across - the hippopotamus can outrun a human. The bellowing of a bull hippo measures an ear-splitting 115 decibels, sounding like the roar of a lion.

Where the Wild Things Are Water in the Desert By W. Scott Leach Camp fires have a strange ability to bring people together in order to ponder the important questions of life, especially when that fire is built under a star-filled sky that stretches over southern Africa. For many nights, my friends and I discussed questions like "Who would win in a fight between the top 10 fiercest animals of North America versus the top 10 wildest animals of Africa?" We decided that, when it comes down to it, the animals of Africa would dominate the animals of North America, hands down. Contrary to what many people may believe, cities and towns in Africa do not have wild elephants walking around the streets. In fact, cities like Cape Town and Bulawayo are almost exactly like cities in the United States. The southern reign of Africa is becoming more and more developed and less and less wild. The magnificent elephants, giraffes and lions that have come to represent Africa are being pushed into national parks or into places that are still too wild for humans to fully develop. The Okavango Delta is made up of such a complex maze of waterways, islands and rivers that it is impossible to navigate through it without local help. For this reason, it has long been protected from intrusive outsiders. Natives of the Okavango Delta live by supporting themselves off of fish caught in the rivers and streams. The main form of transportation consists of canoes dug-out, or mekoros, pushed by long poles. The polers who navigate the Delta have been learning the different water paths and islands since childhood, the knowledge being passed down from generation to generation, father to son. When asked how long it would take to get from the northern end of the Delta to the southernmost end, a poler replied to me, in a matter-of-fact way, "A month and a half."

Equi Unicornes English: Unicorn THE HIPPOI MONOKERATA were the swift-footed Unicorns of the East. They were magnificent snow-white equines with a single, brightly-coloured horn rising from the middle of their foreheads. Parents Nowhere stated - Ctesias, Indica (as summarized in Photius, Myriobiblon 72)
It is believed that Asses, both the tame and the wild kind, all the world over and all other beasts with uncloven hoofs are without knucklebones and without gall in the liver; whereas those horned Asses of India, Ktesias says, have knucklebones and are not without gall. Their knucklebones are said to be black, and if ground down are black inside as well. And these animals are far swifter than any ass or even than any horse or any deer. They begin to run, it is true at a gentle pace, but gradually gather strength until to pursue them is, in the language of poetry, to chase the unattainable.
And Apollonios says that he saw this animal, and admired its natural features; but when Damis asked him if he believed the story about the goblet, he answered:

Hippo Conservation is critical to the overall health of African wetlands. These ecosystems have evolved for millions of years with hippos living in them. Hippos often live in groups of tens to hundreds. The removal of this multi-ton species from a habitat would obviously have dramatic, though unpredictable, consequences. To learn more, visit the Hippo SubGroup's country-by-country assessments of hippo conservation status and protection efforts or download the text of the hippo-related portions of the IUCN Status Survey and Conservation Action Plan : Pigs, Peccaries, and Hippos Edited by William L.R.
