Hinduism is the European name for the Sanatama Dharma, ‘the Eternal Law’. The name hindu comes from the Sanskrit word sindhu, meaning ‘river’. In time the land beyond the river became known as the Hind, and the people who lived there known as Hindus. Depsite having a complex religious system, there is no acknowledged human founder. From what we do know, the principle set of beliefs that form the Hindu religion were brought to India by an invasion of Arayan peoples from the plains of Iran. They already had an established religion, primarily based on the worship of Divine Fire, and the original form of Hinduism actually shared a common theological ancestor with the Zoroastrianism - though both sets of people continued to develop their ideas in isolation. Hinduism is best regarded not a single dogmatised set of principles, as much as a cacophony of diverse interpretations of reality, heavily based on a unique pantheism-polytheism. Divine identities remain very much a local phenomena, and even the main Hindu deities sourced from the Rig Veda can have differing attributes according to different areas. On top of that every tribal geography included its own local divinities into the Hindu pantheon, resulting in an extraordinary range of divine figures and images, many of which may share similar features.

Main htmlAdWH('7008303', '234', '60'); Accept, O Lord, our thanks and praise for all that you have done for us. We thank you for the splendor of the whole creation, for the beauty of this world, for the wonder of life, and for the mystery of love.
We thank you for the blessing of family and friends, and for the loving care which surrounds us on every side.
We thank you for setting us at tasks which demand our best efforts, and for leading us to accomplishments which satisfy and delight us.
We thank you also for those disappointments and failures that lead us to acknowledge our dependence on you alone.
Above all, we thank you for your Son Jesus Christ; for the truth of his Word and the example of his life; for his steadfast obedience, by which he overcame temptation; for his dying, through which he overcame death; and for his rising to life again, in which we are raised to the life of your kingdom.
Grant us the gift of your Spirit, that we may know him and make him known; and through him, at all times and in all places, may give thanks to you in all things. Amen.

The name Hinduism means the civilization of the Hindus (originally, the inhabitants of the land of the Indus River). Introduced c. 1830 by English writers, the term properly denotes the Indian civilization of approximately the last 2,000 years, which gradually evolved from Vedism, the religion of the ancient Indo-European peoples who settled in India in the last centuries of the 2nd millenium B.C.E. Because it integrates a large variety of heterogenous elements, Hinduism constitutes a very complex but largely continuous whole, and since it covers the whole of life, it has religious, social, economic, literary, and artistic aspects. As a religion, Hinduism is a diverse conglomerate of doctrines, cults, and ways of life. The diversity of Hinduism makes compiling a list of Internet resources related to Hinduism problematic. Many of the World Wide Web links are personal and highly artistic, which makes it sometimes difficult to find scholarly material valuable to the Religious Studies student. Listed below are what we consider the best available Internet resources on Hinduism.

whatis.htmWAµr®$µr®$mBIN‚€ÿ HINDUISM Hinduism comprises many forms of religious faith and practice. One should therefore be aware that all the various facets of Hinduism presented here cannot be found in any single individual or group. Those who attend the brahmanic temples for Vishnu and Shiva would normally not practice the forms of worship found in the villages. The variety of forms of worship thus corresponds to social distinctions in Indian society. But what holds this great variety of worship and faith together?
There are certain things which all Hindus agree on:
  • Benares is the holiest place in India, where heaven is actually reaching the world of the humans, and the foundation of Hinduism is the vedas.
The vedic texts were brought to India by the Arians migrating into India during the second millenium BC. The vedas are composed in sanskrit, and they are recited in Hindu temples by Brahmin priests. The vedic era lasted from ca. 1200-900 BC. The most important element in that form of worship was the sacrifice and teh recitation of holy texts. The most important gods were associated with the forces of nature (see Hindu gods regarding Vedic deities). Te Arian people who brought the vedas to India were herders and warriors, and their deities were predominantly male.

Hinduism is a name that Westerners gave to the part of the Indian sub-continent. It was therefore defined by geography (and then came to represent to the West a set of traditions, beliefs and practices). The Hindu way of life, is more often called by Hindus ‘Sanatana Dharma’ (the eternal way of life).
SIZE AND LOCATION This is the largest religion in Asia and the world's third largest, in terms of numbers of followers with approximately 806 million worldwide. About 400,000 – 555,000 followers are based in the UK. These tend to be descendants of Hindu immigrants.

Introduction

, has been examined in light of ecology in another essay on this website. Hinduism and Jainism comprise the oldest continually observed religious traditions of the Indian subcontinent. Both have spread beyond the subcontinent to virtually all parts of the globe, though most adherents to these faiths claim Indian ancestry. In the two conferences devoted to these traditions, scholars and religious leaders explored Hindu and Jaina literature, history, sociology, ritual, and asceticism in light of the current ecological crisis.
Hinduism and Ecology
The Vedic traditions of Hinduism offer imagery that values the power of the natural world. Scholars of the Vedas have held forth various texts and rituals that extol the earth

A Comparative Analysis
"Do not hate your enemy for he may one day become your friend" ~ Ali (ra) "Somebody ought to tell the truth about the Bible. The preachers dare not, because they would be driven from their pulpits. Professors in colleges dare not, because they would lose their salaries. Politicians dare not. They would be defeated. Editors dare not. They would lose subscribers. Merchants dare not, because they might lose customers. Men of fashion dare not, fearing that they would lose caste. Even clerks dare not, because they might be discharged. And so I thought I would do it myself . . . " Robert G. Ingersoll "God sacrificed his own son in place of humans who needed to be punished for their own sins might make some Christians love Jesus, but is an obcene picture of God. It is almost heavenly child abuse, and may infect out imagination at more earthly levels as well. I do not want to express my faith through a theology that pictures God demanding blood sacrifices in order to be reconciled to us." (page 145-146) and "Actually, the fact that we have four gospels lies at the very heart of our problem. Because we read particular parables or sayings or stories in several different versions, we can't miss the disagreements between them"
