Hinduism is a religion with various Gods and Goddesses. According to Hinduism, three Gods rule the world. Brahma: the creator; Vishnu: the preserver and Shiva: the destroyer. Lord Vishnu did his job of preserving the world by incarnating himself in different forms at times of crisis.
The three Lords that rule the world have consorts and they are goddesses too. Consort of Brahma is Sarasvati; goddess of learning. Vishnu's consort is Lakshmi; goddess of wealth and prosperity. Shiva's consort is Parvati who is worshipped as Kali or Durga.
Besides these Gods and Goddesses there are a number of other Gods and Goddesses. To name a few of them, there is Ganesh; who has an elephant's head and he is also a son of Shiva and Parvati, Hanuman; who is an ape, Surya; Lord of sun, Ganga Ma; Goddess of river Ganges; Samundra; Lord of the sea, Indra; king of the Gods ( but he isn't an important God), Prithvi; Goddess of earth, Shakti; Goddess of strength. The Hindus call their Goddesses 'Ma' meaning mother.
Some gods have more than one name. Shiva is also known as Shankar, Mahadev, Natraj, Mahesh and many other names. Ganesh is also called Ganpati. God Vishnu

Hinduism is the major religion of India, practiced by more than 80% of the population. In contrast to other religions, it has no founder. Considered the oldest religion in the world, it dates back, perhaps, to prehistoric times. No single creed or doctrine binds Hindus together. Intellectually there is complete freedom of belief, and one can be monotheist, polytheist, or atheist. Hinduism is a syncretic religion, welcoming and incorporating a variety of outside influences. The most ancient sacred texts of the Hindu religion are written in Sanskrit and called the Vedas vedah B.C. ?). Present-day Hindus rarely refer to these texts but do venerate them. B.C.

Hinduism
A Christian Perspective
Rick Rood
Though Hinduism may seem far removed from our everyday experience, it's becoming increasingly important that we as Christians understand this mysterious religion from India. This is so, if for no other reason than that Hinduism claims 1/6 of the world's population, with over 750 million followers worldwide. But it's also important because its influence is being felt more and more in our own country. Most of us have had at least some exposure to what has become known as the New Age movement. If so, we have probably realized that Hinduism is the wellspring of a good deal of New Age thinking. Most of us are probably also aware than an increasing number of Asian Indians are residing in the U.S. We may be surprised, in fact, to learn that there are approximately 200 Hindu temples or Hindu centers in the U.S. Many believe that due to its eclectic nature, Hinduism has the potential to serve as a major vehicle for uniting much of the non-Christian religious world. The appeal of Hinduism to Western culture is not difficult to comprehend. For one, Hinduism is comfortable with evolutionary thinking. As modern science emphasizes our physical evolution, so Hinduism emphasizes our spiritual evolution. As much of modern psychology emphasizes the basic goodness and unlimited potential of human nature, so Hinduism emphasizes man's essential divinity. As modern philosophy emphasizes the relativity of all truth claims, so Hinduism tolerates many seemingly contradictory religious beliefs. As a religion that also emphasizes the primacy of the spiritual over material reality, Hinduism appeals to many who are disillusioned with strictly material pursuits.

What Hindus believe and how their beliefs are contradicted in the Bible.

What do Hindus Believe? Hindu God Krishna Hindu God Gamesh Hinduism is a religion that started in the Indian subcontinent thousands of years ago. There are over 750 million Hindus worldwide, even within the United States. Hinduism emphasizes man's divinity. There are no dogmas or strict codes. Like Buddhism, Hinduism is an ever growing and ever changing belief system. Its roots are in the Aryan literary and religious practices and the Dravidian religious practices. From the Aryan roots come the Hindu caste system, which has long been criticized because of its elitist structure. and the Vedas, which form the basis of Hindu beliefs. A person is a member of a case by birth or personal karma. The lowest members of the Hindu caste system are the laborers. Those outside the caste system are known as the untouchables, or outcasts. They are usually the poor. Salvation is only possible for the upper three classes in the caste system: First: Priests, Second: Rulers or Warriors, Third: Merchants and Farmers. Salvation is not possible for those who are laborers because they are not twice born. Though the system was outlawed in the 1940's, the caste system is still a big part in Indian society. Hindus have a strong belief in karma. Karma determines one's position in life as well as the cycle of life. Karma in other words, is cause and effect. There are three goals to which Hindus may give any of those. The first goal is through love and sex. The second goal is wealth and success. The third goal is seeking the common good. Hindus also believe in salvation through works, way of knowledge, and the way of devotion, all of which are achieved through fulfilling one's duties, meditation or worship. They also believe that Brahman is his creation and that all are divine, even objects have a divine nature. Brahman is an impersonal, absolute god that cannot be known by humans. One's soul is Brahman and each creation is god. There are many gods and goddesses in Hinduism, some of whom are intermarried and incarnate. Each diety have their own characteristics and represent various attributes.

Hinduism
Hinduism is the world's third largest religion with over five hundred million followers. It began in India. Presently over two-thirds of its followers live in India. It is believed that Hinduism goes back over four thousand years and is the oldest of all religions. According to Hindu doctrine, the ideal life consists of four stages: 1. The period of descipline and education 2. The life of the householder and active worker 3. The retreat for the loosening of the bonds 4. The life of the hermit, preparing for death and union with God. In homes where Hinduism is practiced there is generally a room or corner of a room for worship called puja where there are pictures of a statue of a particular God. Hinduism recognizes thousands of lessor Gods that all come under the umbrella of the one God Brahman. Hinduism also recognizes the devine avatars, God-realized beings living on earth. The two main avatars are Rama and Krishna. Rama lived over twenty thousand years ago. (How interesting to me that "Rama" is a lot like "Ra" the Egyptian God!). Krishna lived around 5000 BC There have been other avatars but these two are the most well-known and highly revered. Sai Baba, who is now living in India is the most popular avatar since Krishna. Sai Baba, is able to reach more people as transportation and communication is easier than in Krishna's lifetime. HINDUISM - Encyclopedia Britannica Hinduism - the beliefs, practices, and socioreligious institutions of the Hindus (originally, the inhabitants of the land of the Indus River). Introduced in about 1830 by British writers, the term properly denotes the Indian civilization of approximately the last 2,000 years, which evolved from Vedism, the religion of the Indo-European peoples who settled in India in the last centuries of the 2nd millennium BC.

Charts Glossary News Database ... Sites In the "Encyclopedia of New Age Beliefs," John Ankerberg and John Weldon state that in many respects the philosophy of the New Age Movement parallels that of Hinduism. In addition, there are scores of modern religious cults and sects that have been influenced by Hinduism to varying degrees. They also point out that ... literally millions of Americans have taken up Hindu practices, such as yoga, meditation, developing altered states of consciousness, and seeking Hindu "enlightenment." Hinduism Defined Weldon and Ankerberg write: In its most simple definition, Hinduism may be defined as the religious beliefs and practices common to India. Defining Hinduism in a more precise manner is difficult because of its wide number of practices and teachings. To illustrate this, here are selected definitions from authoritative sources. Hinduism is The Way of the majority of the people of India, a Way that is a combination of religious belief, rites, customs, and daily practices, many of which appear overtly secular but in most cases have religious origins and sanctions. Hinduism is noted as being the only one of the major beliefs that cannot be defined, for any definition is inadequate, contradictory, and incomplete.

Hinduism Hinduism is a way of living according to the one's understanding of principles of Vedas and Upanishads. Veda is revealed knowledge. Just as the knowledge of gravity was revealed to Newton, similarly, in India, many Rishis or Seers were awakened to certain transcendental Eternal Truths. These Rishis realized that their real nature was not concerned with or linked with 'body or mind', nor was it dependent on sense perceptions, but was in fact identical with the Universal Consciousness.
