    Soma (from hindu mythology), Not too surprising if you read on about hindu mythology as below, and the present Hindu attitude towards intoxicants.
    http://peyote.com/jonstef/Hindu.htm
    Soma (from Hindu Mythology) Soma according to Vedic Hymns, is the god who, "represents and animates the juice of the Soma plant." He was the Indian Bacchus. Not only are all the hymns of the ninth book of the Rig-Veda, 114 in number besides a few in other places, are dedicated to his honour, but constant references occur to him in large proportions in other hymns. In some of these hymns he is extolled as the Creator, or Father of the gods. Evidently at that time he was a most popular deity. Indra was an enthusiastic worshipper of Soma.
    The following lines lines will show the warmth and feeling towards him :- "This Soma is a god; he cures
    The sharpest ills that man endures.
    He heals the sick, the sad he cheers,
    He nerves the weak, dispels their fears;
    The faint with martial ardour fires,
    With lofty thoughts the bard inspires;
    The soul from earth to heaven he lifts :
    So great and wondrous are his gifts,
    Men feel the god within their veins
    And cry loud in exulting strains :
    'We've quaffed the Soma bright And are immortal grown : We've entered into light

    Introduction
    Hinduism is the religion of the Hindus. It is the oldest of all living religions. Hinduism is not a man-made religion. It was not founded by any single person. It is not based on a set of dogmas preached by a particular set of teachers. It was not started as a system, like Islam or Christianity. It is the product of the seers of the Vedas. It was developed from age to age by the teachings of Avataras, Rishis, Vedas, the Upanishads, the Gita and the Itihasas. It will exist as long as the world lasts. There is a peculiar, mysterious spiritual force that is ingrained in the heart of every Hindu. Hinduism is also known by the names Sanatana Dharma and Vaidika Dharma. Sanatana Dharma means eternal religion, the Ancient Law. Vaidika Dharma means the religion of the Vedas. The Vedas are the foundational scriptures of Hinduism. THE DIVINE LIFE SOCIETY

It falls on the 4th day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada (August-September). It is observed throughout India, as well as by devoted Hindus in all parts of the world.
    Ganpati is the elephant-headed God. he is worshipped first in any prayers. his names are repeated first before any auspicious work is begun, before any kind of worship is begun. he is the God of power and wisdom. he is the eldest son of Shiva and the elder brother of Skanda or Kartikeya. he is the energy of Shiva and so he is called the son of Shankar and Umadevi.
    The following story is narrated about his birth and how he came to have the head of an elephant
    Once upon a time, the Goddess Gauri (Parvati wife of Shiva), while bathing, created Ganpati as a pure white being out of the mud of her Body and placed him at the entrance of the house. She told him not to allow anyone to enter while she went inside for a bath. God Shiva himself was returning home quite thirsty and was stopped by Ganpati at the gate. Shiva became angry and cut off Ganpati's head as he thought Ganpati was an outsider,when Gauri came to know of this she was sorely grieved.To console her grief, Shiva ordered his servants to cut off and bring to him the head of any creature that might be sleeping with its head facing north. The servants went on their mission and found only an elephant in that position. The sacrifice was thus made and the elephant's head was brought before Shiva. The God then joined the elephant's head onto the body of Ganpati.

    Vishnu Lord Vishnu , Hindu god of protection and salvation, husband of lakshmi, hinduism gods and goddesses
    Lord Vishnu Vishnu is regarded as a major god in Hinduism and Indian mythology. He is thought as the preserver of the universe, while two other major Hindu gods, Brahma and Shiva, are considered the creator and destroyer of the universe, respectively.
    As the preserver of the cosmos, Vishnu upholds the universal laws. Unlike Shiva, who often seeks refuge in the forest to meditate, Vishnu constantly participates in worldly affairs. Ensuring that all is well. When order prevails in the universe, Vishnu sleeps on the coils of Sesha, ruler of the Nagas. As Sesha floats along the cosmic ocean supporting Vishnu , the universe unfolds from Vishnu's dream. But when there is disorder in the universe, Vishnu either mounts his vehicle, Garuda, and battles with the forces of chaos, or he sends one of his Avatars (or incarnations) to save the world. It is believed that Vishnu would have ten such Avatars, the most popular being Rama and Krishna. The full list of ten Avatars is as follows:

    The Rig Veda, Hinduism and Hindu mythology, vedas hindu religious texts
    The Vedas are the earliest Hindu texts, and they were composed and performed orally for several centuries (generally believed to be from 1500 BCE to 1200 BCE).
    The word veda means knowledge or wisdom. There are four of them, and they are collectively referred to as Sruti , which means "that which is heard", and Samhita , which simply means "collection." The oldest is called the Rig Veda , with the other three being the Yajur Veda , the Sama Veda , and the Atharva Veda . The Rig Veda is the most important, with the others having come later and are based upon it. They are considered by Hindus to be revealed literature, having originated with the gods whose praise they sing. Important later Hindu scriptures such as the Brahmanas and the Upanishads , which are ascribed to humans, are commentaries on the original Vedas. hindu mythology. Chitra Sankaran, Assistant University of Singapore. hindu mythology occupies a singular position in the world today.
    http://www.postcolonialweb.org/india/religion/hindu/myth.html
    Hindu Mythology
    Chitra Sankaran, Assistant Professor of English and the University Scholars Programme, National University of Singapore
    Hindu mythology occupies a singular position in the world today. For despite being one of the most ancient, it is also paradoxically a living mythology in that it exercises considerable influence over and invities active belief and participation from about a sixth of the world population (i.e.India's population!). Perphaps what makes Hindu mythology so singular Is that it seems to contain in essence that most vital property of myth great antiquity combined with perpetual contemporaneity. Though the Ramayana Maharabharatha , and Puranas and the Vedas were considered authoritative within Hinduism, the fact that Hinduism was not a founded religion meant that, on the one hand there was nothing to prevent charlatans and sophists setting up cult groups and gathering a crowd of followers around them, but on the other hand it offered tremendous intellectual freedom and opportunity for several creative strains to co-exist within its framework without quarrel. Thus, on the one side, we have the austere philosophical systems preoccupied with discovering the nature of life and the nature of Godhead, and on the other,. we have the chaotic amoral world of mythology with its Devas (Gods) and its Asuras (demons) perpetually at odds with one another with the hapless manusha (man) placed at the centre of it All. Though the mythology and the philosophy are two distinct features of the religion, the elements intermingle constantly in text after text. within the Hindu tradition.

Especial interest belongs to these inquiries for us, because these religions are religions of the great Aryan race to which we belong. The people among whom they were introduced all used some dialect of the family of language to which our own belongs. Even young readers will take an interest in such books as Clarke's Great Religions and Johnson's Oriental Religions, which are devoted to careful studies of them. Classical Hindu Mythology: A Reader in the Sanskirt Puranas > Customer Review #1: Great selections, great translators

    I have unfailingly found J.A. Van Buitenen to be both a true and interesting translator, this volume is no exception. Its a very comprehensive look at the subject matter, treated in such a way that it is accessible to the inexperienced Western reader, while leaving alot of meat left for the more accomplished reader. My one wish is to have a better idea of how the selections relate to the individual Purana books, and how they may be dated in history.
    Classical Hindu Mythology: A Reader in the Sanskirt Puranas > Customer Review #2: Classical Hindu Mythology Just read the previous review from Norway which does not make much sense to me. This is a lengthy, detailed and dense translation of a wealth of Hindu myths. To my mind it is neither short (373 pages) nor simple, but difficult for the average reader. It reads like a scholarly textbook that requires study to use. I found it fascinating and worth the effort. But I wonder if the previous reviewer and I have read the same book!
