    Hindi language
Hindi is an Indian language spoken in most states in northern and central India . It is an Indo-European language , more specifically a prakrit . Hindi became the official language of India on January 26 and is the third most spoken language in the world, after Chinese and English. About 600 million people speak, read and write Hindi, in India and abroad, and the total number of people who can understand the language exceeds 1.3 billion. In a number of countries including Fiji Mauritius Guyana , and Suriname Hindi is the majority language. Linguists think of Hindi and Urdu as the same language, the difference being that Hindi is written in Devanagari and draws vocabulary from Sanskrit , while Urdu is written in Arabic script and draws on Persian and Arabic . The separation is largely a political one, for before the partition of India and Pakistan by the British , Hindi and Urdu were considered one and the same language, Hindustani More than 180 million people in India regard Hindi as their mother tongue. Another 300 million use it as second language. Outside of India, Hindi speakers are 100,000 in USA; 685,170 in Mauritius; 890,292 in South Africa; 232,760 in Yemen; 147,000 in Uganda; 5,000 in Singapore; 8 million in Nepal; 20,000 in New Zealand; 30,000 in Germany. Urdu, the official language of Pakistan, spoken by about 41 million in Pakistan and other countries, is essentially the same language. Dakhini is an older, southern form of Urdu that uses fewer Persian or Arabic words.

An accurately identified family is a phylogenetic unit, i.e., all its members derive from a common ancestor. The ancestor is very seldom known to us directly, since most languages have a very short recorded history. However, it is possible to recover many of the features of the common ancestor of related languages by applying comparative method a reconstructive procedure worked out by 19th-century linguist August Schleicher. It can demonstrate the family status of many of the groupings listed below.

Early in his freshman year Shah met with members of the administration to present his idea. He initially spoke with Associate Dean of the College Hank Dobin, Dean of the College Nancy Malkiel and President Tilghman, among others, but Shah said the response was not too favorable.
No one thought it would be possible for Hindi to be taught at Princeton before Shah graduated, he said. Administrators saw little evidence of enough student interest in the language to support a full program, and the University would have to hire a professor qualified to teach the language.
Despite these roadblocks, Shah continued to push the issue. He talked to Wilson School professor Atul Kohli, chairman of the Committee for South Asian Studies. Kohli was "instrumental" in making it happen, said Shah. "I've done everything through Kohli." History professor Gyan Prakash was also an important influence, Shah added.

Hindi-Urdu is the third most widely spoken language in the world. It belongs to the Indo-Aryan group of languages, a subset of Indo-European.
    Some history:
    The Hindi Language At Cornell
There are three levels of Hindi-Urdu instruction at Cornell. The first level is split into two streams. The 101-102 sequence is intended for true beginners, students with no prior exposure to the languages. The 109-110 sequence is an accelerated course intended for students with various degrees of prior oral and/or aural exposure to the languages, but very little or no formal education in them. Both streams continue on to 201-202 and 301-302. Students with prior exposure to Hindi-Urdu should consult the instructor or take a placement exam to determine what level they should start in.
Cornell Area Program Affiliation: South Asia Program
The South Asia Program coordinates teaching, research, and campus activities focusing on the Indian subcontinent, which comprises the modern nations of Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Since 1985, Cornell has been in consortium with Syracuse University as a National Resource Center for South Asia. The Program attracts students engaged in regional history and the social sciences, and students are well known for their research on questions concerning the environment, rural inequality and agrarian change, labor market dynamics, economic liberalization, social movements and questions of governance. Through a weekly seminar series, yearly workshops and cultural events, students, faculty and invited speakers exchange ideas, research experiences and on-going research.
