    Hindi: The language of songs
Hindi is a direct descendant of Sanskrit through Prakrit and Apabhramsha. It has been influenced and enriched by Dravidian, Turkish, Farsi, Arabic, Portugese and English. It is a very expressive language. In poetry and songs, it can convey emotions using simple and gentle words. It can also be used for exact and rational reasoning. More than 180 million people in India regard Hindi as their mother tongue. Another 300 million use it as second language. Outside of India, Hindi speakers are 100,000 in USA; 685,170 in Mauritius; 890,292 in South Africa; 232,760 in Yemen; 147,000 in Uganda; 5,000 in Singapore; 8 million in Nepal; 20,000 in New Zealand; 30,000 in Germany. Urdu, the official language of Pakistan, spoken by about 41 million in Pakistan and other countries, is essentially the same language. Dakhini is an older, southern form of Urdu that uses fewer Persian or Arabic words.

    > SHORT HINDI PHRASES AND SENTENCES
For the benefit of those who are planning to visit India or areas of the world where the Hindi language is spoken, we have listed below some simple phases and sentences that may help you communicate with your Indian friends and develop a good rapport.
To gain a greater knowledge of the Hindi language, please access this site -CLICK HERE
Although Hindi has a long and short “A”, there is only ONE “ E” , sounding like the “ay” as in the English “bay” .eg. the Hindi “beti” (“daughter” - sounding like “bay-ti” ) . One of the very FIRST words you need to say in GREETING an Indian is - “NAMASTE” - as expression of honour. Sounds like “numb – a – stay” in English. That should be the very FIRST word you speak when greeting an Indian and it is expressed with hands folded as in prayer. That makes an excellent impression !
The Hindi “ i “ also has both LONG and SHORT forms , the short sounding like the “ i “ as in the English “tip” and the LONG (ee) as in the English “keep”. e.g. “beti” (daughter) above has a “ i “ at the end sounding like the English “tip” . The LONG “ i “ sounds like “ee” as in “honey-bee”. – eg. The Hindi “rotii” (bread) is written in English with two “i”s” because it is LONG as in English “bee”.
Similarly, “U” can sound short as in the English “put” or long as in the English “toot”. I you see ONE “u”, make a “put” sound” and TWO “uu”’s , make a “toot” sound.

    Hindi Text-to-Speech Engine
Hi, I am Parth Mehta, first year Master in Computer Science (MCS) student in Pune University . This TTS engine is a part of my project (completed in about a week!) for the first semester.
    About the project
This project was done as part of first semester assignment. I was quite surprised as there are no Hindi TTS engines available, although some efforts have been made in this direction. When I searched on the net for help on this topic only few results came up. Those too were not very helpful except for C-DAC site. A few others gave general help on the topic. No technical material is available on this topic. I believe it is more of a research topic! There are lots of problems when one takes up such a project. Firstly, there are no keyboard standards for Hindi (as far as I know). Font is another problem: Windows 95, 98 don’t support Hindi language (and many of us still use them). So this engine will work properly only with a particular font. Lastly, the project has countless flaws! It was done in a week’s time (not good enough excuse, but I am sure it is good enough to inspire others to develop better engines).

Introduction Hindi is the most widely spoken language of the Republic of India, centered principally in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh in the north-central part of the country. Its 275 million speakers rank it as one of the leading languages of the world but it is, nevertheless, understood by only about one-third of India's population. When independence was achieved in 1947, Hindi was chosen as India's national language, but its failure to win acceptance among speakers of other languages has forced it to share the title of official language with English. Speakers of Hindi are also to be found in many scattered parts of the world. In the newly independent countries of Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean, and Fiji, in the Pacific, it is spoken by about a third of the population. There are also sizable bodies of speakers in Trinidad, Guyana, and Surinam.
