The GRID Project at UVic This web site is maintained by Jan Van Uytven Last Modified: The particle physics group at the University of Victoria does research into the nature of the fundamental constituents of matter and their interactions. Addressing these questions requires collaboration with researchers around the world; to build the instruments capable of addressing these questions, to analyse the data they produce and to understand the consequences of these data for our theory of nature. Our experimental physicists are involved in the construction and operation of large detectors at several leading laboratories. We participate in the

Lines of research at NSC KIPT. Interaction of electrons and photons of intermediate energies (up to 2 GeV) with nuclei. Quantum electrodynamic processes in substance, including crystals. Mechanisms of nuclear reactions and structure of nuclei investigated with heavy nuclei and low-energy multicharged ions. Nuclear methods of investigating the structure and properties of substance. Radiation technologies. Basic results of recent years. INTERMEDIATE-ENERGY PHYSICS (up to 2 GeV) Comprehensive studies are made of polarization parameters in reactions of meson photoproduction on protons and neutrons, amplitudes of these processes are unambiguously determined. The probability of quadrupole delta-resonance decay is obtained to confirm the idea about the tensor nature of quark interaction in the nucleon. The experiments have confirmed the hypothesis about a partial conservation of the axial vector current; the contribution of the isotensor component to the electromagnetic hadron current is calculated. Studies of photo- and electrodisintegration of the deuteron and of He and He nuclei are carried out, showing evidence for dibaryon resonances in these processes.

Faculty and postdoc openings:
This year we have a faculty search underway. The ad indicates that there are several possible options for the Department, including high energy theory. The final choice of area will be decided only later, based on the strength of the candidates and possibly on the availability of start-up funds (for the nano-physics option). At the moment the internal betting is that we have a 95% chance of completing the search (in one of the areas) and a 40% chance of hiring two people (in different areas). Our ad says that consideration of candidates will start on Dec 1 and continue until the position is filled. We will continue accepting applications - also have your references send their letters. We expect to have a preliminary short list identified by mid-January - this will evolve as the search progresses. We will update the information here if anything changes. John Donoghue (email address above) is the chair of the HET search - you can contact him for more specific information. We also are searching for a postdoc this year. Here is the

Critical Tool Library for High Energy Nuclear Physics Calculations Ported to CRAY T3E
LAWRENCE BERKELEY NATIONAL LABORATORY An international library of computer tools developed to support high energy and nuclear physics (HENP) research has now been adapted for use on massively parallel processor machines. The effort to make the CERNLib collection of codes available for use on MPP computers was led by the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center ( NERSC ) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory , an NPACI partner. Scientists at Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center collaborated on the project. The library was ported to run on Cray T3E supercomputers at NERSC and the Pittsburgh center. The ported CERNlib modules will be available to researchers beginning this week (June 10). Completion of the project paves the way for conducting detailed simulation of physics data from such upcoming experiments as the STAR, (Solenoidal Tracking at the Relatavistic Heavy Ion Colider) detector being installed at Brookhaven. The detector is scheduled to begin taking real data starting next year. Closely coupled to the work is the U.S. Department of Energy's High Energy and Nuclear Physics Data Grand Challenge, a project to develop tools to allow physicists to analyze and manage the massive amounts of data which will be generated by next generation of experiments. According to Craig Tull, leader of the High Energy Nuclear Physics (HENP) Support Group at NERSC, the HENP community has traditionally relied on conventional UNIX platforms (workstations and servers) and there had been little incentive to port the CERNLib to massively parallel processor machines. Until now. With the STAR experiment, as well as the BaBar Project at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, scientists will be confronted with huge quantities of data, and therefore need more powerful simulation tools.

Nuclear Physics Use of High Energy Facilities
Vital nuclear physics experiments using leptonic probes have also been carried out at three laboratories whose main mission is in high energy physics: CERN; Fermilab; and SLAC. A major new effort is now underway at DESY. The extremely high energies of these facilities has supported measurements providing insight into the spin structure of the nucleon and a variety of other measurements uniquely sensitive to the underlying quark structure of nuclei. The NSAC Long Range Plan must make provision for the continuation of this type of measurement as high-return initiatives surface in the future. cardman@cebaf.gov
