Lesson Plan: Medicinal Herbs II (Grades 4-8)
Objective: The goal of this lesson is to provide the students with a deeper understanding of medicinal herbs and to sharpen their plant identification skills. Materials: Subjects: Medicinal Herbs, Botany Procedure: Begin the lesson by refreshing the students about medicinal herbs and their uses. Next, show the students illustrations of plants or, ideally, cuttings from various medicinal herbs (If your classroom all ready has herbs growing, carefully examine the potted plants.) Ask the students questions such as: What makes some plants look different from others? Are all plants made up of the same parts? Do the leaves and stems of plants have different textures? What kinds What colors of flowers do different plants have? Do all flowers have the same amount of petals? What are pistils and stamens? Can you tell plants apart by looking at their roots? Next, discuss the ways by which plants might be identified by these structures and explain how important it is to properly identify plants that are used for medicine and food because some might be poisonous and should not come in contact with the body or be ingested. Activity: In order to do this, the plants must first be dried and preserved.

Trends In Economic Botany:
The Rising Use Of Herbal Supplements
By Paige A. Mettler
The use of herbal remedies to treat health problems in humans is a tradition that dates back many centuries. A precursor to modern, Western pharmaceuticals, traditional healers used herbs to treat a wide range of ailments and afflictions. While many are familiar with their use by American Indians, the practice of herbal therapy dates back to ancient Chinese and Egyptian healers. Herbs were used in ancient times to treat anything from headaches (with willow bark tea, now an active ingredient in aspirin) to fever and premenstrual syndrome (with chamomile). In an age of modern pharmaceuticals and their ready availability in Western culture, it is easy to forget that approximately 40% of today's modern medicines are produced with chemicals derived from plants (Counter 1998). In a trend reversal that has the modern medical community alarmed and puzzled, the sales of herbal remedies in the Untied States has increased dramatically. Traditionally, Europe has been the largest market for herbal remedies, accounting for 45% or $7.5 billion in sales for 1997 (Scimone and Scimone 1998). Within Europe, Germany dominates the market with sales of $3.6 billion, followed by France ($1.8 billion), Italy ($800 million) and the United Kingdom ($300 million) (Scimone and Scimone 1998). Growth in the European market was predicted to be 5-10% in 1998-1999 and 15-20% in 1999-2000 (Scimone and Scimone 1998). The European market has become solidly established over the past 80 years, with a modest growth rate until recent years that has shown another upward trend.

The Indices Nominum Supragenericorum Plantarum Vascularium Project Databases (http://matrix.nal.usda.gov:8080/star/supragenericname.html) is intended to capture all valid legitimate and extant vascular plant names proposed above the rank of genus - unfortunately its utility was not clear to myself or the more taxonomically knowledgeable members of are staff whom I asked to look at it for me. Seemingly much more useful are the databases set up by James L. Reveal in a series of pages linked to Vascular Plant Family Nomenclature (http://www.inform.umd.edu:8080/EdRes/Colleges/LFSC/life_sciences/.plant_biology/fam/revfam.html) which set out to provide bibliographical information on all validly published (and thus both legitimate and illegitimate) family names and listings of validly published and legitimate order and superorder names based on generic names. It also includes the latest news about family nomenclature and a short essay on suprageneric nomenclature. For those more interested in horticulture, there is a small herbal database called the

    DOMINION HERBALCOLLEGE
    Established 1926
    Syllabus
Dominion Herbal College, was founded by Dr. Herbert Nowell, a Naturopathic Physician in Vancouver, B.C. in 1926. Prior to 1918, he taught botanical medicine to medical doctors, when such medicine was accepted and practised by many in the profession. Dr. Nowell's knowledge in Herbal Medicine was admired and appreciated by doctors in England, Canada and the United States. He spent many hours researching and compiling the material recorded in Books One and Two of the DHC's Chartered Herbalist Program. Ella Birzneck, M.H., continued the tradition and spirit of Dr. Nowell's love of herbs and natural healing by resurrecting and reorganising DHC. Many of Ella's favourite remedies accumulated as a result of a lifetime of experience in Herbal Medicine and other holistic health methods are contained in Book Three of Chartered Herbalist Program. Since 1962, members of Ella Birzneck's family have worked to ensure that the original purpose of the College, which was and still, is to preserve and nurture the study of Herbal Medicine.

    Herb
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition A herb (pronounced ûrb in American English American English is a form of the English language used mostly in the United States of America. It is the primary language used in the United States. According to the 1990 census, 97 percent of U.S. residents speak English "well" or "very well". Only 0.8% (8 people out of a thousand) speak no English at all, as compared with 3.6 percent in 1890.
    History
English was inherited from British colonization. The first wave of English-speaking immigrants was settled in North America in the 17th Century. In this century, there were also speakers in North America of Dutch, French, German, Native American, Spanish, Swedish and Finnish languages.
Click the link for more information. and hûrb in British English British English refers to the different forms of English spoken in the British Isles. In particular it often refers to the written Standard English and the pronunciation known as Received Pronunciation (RP). The term is often used to make a distinction from American English. Though in this context it should be referred to as International English, since few if any other English-speaking countries have adopted the changes in spelling introduced by nineteenth century U.S. lexicographers. This article deals with British English in the stricter sense.
