Herbs are very easy plants to grow and can even be grown indoors. They require little care and space, have few insect and disease problems and require only moderate fertility levels. Thus, growing herbs has become continuing and satisfying hobby for many home gardeners. When beginning an herb garden, it is important to choose a proper site. An optimal site is one where the herb garden receives at least 4 to 6 hours of sunlight a day. Herbs will grow well under a wide range of soil conditions, with the exception of extremely wet, poorly drained soil. Popular herbs such as sage, rosemary and thyme require a well-drained but moderately moist soil. Poorly drained soil can be improved by modifying or amending the soil or by use of raised beds. Although they have little fertility requirements, herbs do better in soils of low to medium fertility.

For the price of just a couple of pre-packed herbs from the supermarket, you can grow your own supply and pick them fresh just seconds before you use them. It couldn't be easier to grow herbs, even if you've only got space for a window-box. All they need is a sunny spot with free-draining soil. If your land is on the heavy side, improve its drainage beforehand by adding some grit, or consider planting your herbs in a raised bed that will be naturally free-draining. Garden suppliers stock a wide range of herb plants. Look out for those varieties that have more unusually coloured leaves or flowers than the common forms. If there are some herbs that you want to have plenty of, you may prefer to raise them from seed instead to help keep costs down. Plant your herbs next to a path so they're easy to reach and also to give you the pleasure of smelling their aroma every time you brush past. Then simply harvest them, as you want, either using them fresh or preserving them for later use.

Gardening
... Help Like this page? Send it to a friend! The herb garden It’s almost impossible to grow a bed or pot of herbs that doesn’t look fantastic. They are also very easy to grow. Like ornamental plants, there are annuals such as basil, coriander, and marjoram; perennials such as mint, fennel and thyme; woody perennials such as rosemary, lavender and sage; or even bulbs such as chives. You can grow herbs in a formal herb garden, scattered among ornamental plants in a bed or border; or as pot plants on the patio. Keep a few near the back door, they smell great on a hot summer’s day and they’ll be within easy picking reach. They also make great hanging basket plants. Tips for success Herbs do best in a hot, sunny spot. In these conditions they’ll make the highest level of the aromatic oils that give them their smell and taste. They also prefer well-drained soil, and are perfect for growing in pots near the kitchen door. Like all plants they enjoy regular feeding throughout the growing season. Some perennial herbs, such as mint and lemon balm, are a bit too vigorous for their own good.

Planting Herbs In A Container
Planting Into Landscape Fabric Planting Mint In The Garden Common Name Herbs A B C D ... Z MANY of the plants we grow such as annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees are herbs in the true sense of the word. With increased interest in recent years in continental or gourmet cooking the word "herb" is nearly always thought of by home gardeners to mean the "culinary" herb. The Herb Garden The herbs I have grown are listed below with instructions for growing them. Perhaps inexperienced gardeners as well as those who have not yet had the pleasure of growing these interesting plants will give some thought to starting a small herb garden. Even a small plot 4 by 6 feet will grow all a small family would need. If not grown for use in cooking, herbs are worth growing for pleasant aromatic foliage and some of them for the beauty of the flowers as well. Herbs can be used fresh for garnish in salads and to perk up the flavors of bland vegetables or to add flavor to meats and stews in which case one needs only to nip off a few leaves when wanted.

Plant a garden that's as beautiful as it is useful and delicious. Our mini circle design is a good start. A herb garden is one of the loveliest additions you can make to your garden and lifestyle.
To grow herbs you need a sunny spot with at least six hours of sun a day. Average soil is okay, as long as it's well drained. If the herbs are close to the kitchen, all the better because they'll be handy for clipping at a moment's notice.
Design options are limitless. Your herb planting may be big or small, modern and mixed, with succulents or ornamental grasses or a cottagey mingle of herbs and flowers. At its simplest, it may be a collection of potted herbs.
Our plan here is for a circle about 2m in diameter. This could be attached to a patio or even be placed at the crossing of two paths. If you prefer, grow the mint in the ground instead of in a tub, or use a sundial, birdbath, statue or standard rose as the central feature.

How many times has your grocery store been out of fresh basil, rosemary or mint? With a little planning, you can build your own 24-hour supply of garden-fresh herbs. Even a small garden can infuse your kitchen with heavenly aromas and striking flavor.
Finding a Spot
When growing herbs, location is key. Some like it sunny and dry, while others prefer filtered sunlight and moist soil. It's best to match seeds with the site. If your patio is the only sunny spot, set out herbs in large pots. If your yard is all sun, try planting shade-loving plants east of taller varieties like sunflowers. The tall plants will generate shade for the smaller ones.
Wondering which herbs are sun lovers? Here are a few rules of thumb:
