Planting an Herb Garden: Part One
There are many reasons to plant an herb garden. What is yours? Will it provide the herbs you need for your favorite dishes? Will it become an aromatic and scent-filled garden that will attract butterflies and other likeable insects? Will it solve a problem spot? Do you have an interest in useful plants; in teas or medicinal herbs, perhaps, or dye plants, or herbals for crafts? Then again, maybe you have always loved herbs and herb gardens and want to grow a beautiful, historically accurate garden, or simply, a well-planned garden that shows the many wonderful qualities of herbs to best advantage. Whatever your reason to grow herbs, there is a garden you can grow. Herbs are undemanding and easy to care for. All they need is a spot with at least five or six hours of sun. They will grow in almost any kind of soil, and do not require lots of watering. Herb gardening is the perfect choice for the beginning gardener, because herbs are easy to cultivate and grow so rapidly a novice can achieve almost instant success. But experienced gardeners derive great pleasure from herbs as well. Planning and planting a beautiful herb garden is very rewarding, and there are so many herbs and so many things to do with them, you can never run out of interesting new challenges. If you have never grown an herb garden, here is the advice most experts give for getting started.

WINDOW SILL HERB GARDENING
Contact: Leonard Perry, Extension Professor
University of Vermont An indoor kitchen herb garden will add interest to your meals and color to your window sills...and help satisfy that urge to garden during the cold, wintry months ahead. Most culinary herbs require at least five hours of sun per day. You can use a sunny window, provided the reflected heat is not too intense. If you don't have a window with direct sunlight, put your pots of herbs in a spot with plenty of light, then move them into the sun for a few hours whenever possible. Fluorescent lights or special grow lamps also work if left on about 14 to 16 hours per day. Place the lights 12 to 18 inches above the tops of the plants. If the light source is too far away, insufficient light will reach the plants, and they won't grow. You must also consider temperature and humidity. Most herbs need daytime temperatures of 68 to 70 degrees F with 30 to 50 percent humidity. To increase humidity, place a dish of water near the plants. Pot your herbs in a potting mix of vermiculite or equal parts peat moss, garden loam, and coarse sand. Any container will do as long as it has good drainage.

Basil was the herb of the year 2003 and because we do not offer garlic plants (yet!) which is the herb of the year for 2004, we decided to re-reun the information on basil. Always our favorite, basil is the most popular selling herb capturing approximately 22% of the market. There is good reason for this! Basil is used as a culinary, medicinal, aromatic, ornamental and cosmetic herb as well as a companion plant in the vegetable garden. There many varieties and AlwaysSummerHerbs offers 14 of the best. History
According to Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs, basil was not associated with the good feelings we have today. In 17th century Italy, basil was feared. In an anecdote attributed to Tournefort (a 17th century botanist) a man, who reportedly snuff dry basil frequently, turned to madness and eventually death in a short time. Upon opening his brain, surgeons found a nest of scorpions. Some believed that the name basil is derived from

    56. Organic Gardening By Samantha
Personal organic vegetable and herb garden in Oswego County, NY.
    http://www.base.com/samantha/garden.html
    Welcome to my Garden!
Most people are really surprised to find out I have a garden and love gardening with a passion. But then I like surprising people. :) In the months to come I will note here the progress of my organic herb and vegetable garden and offer as much basic information as possible. To start, a brief introduction: I live in Oswego County, NY (north of Syracuse), on a rocky, wooded site - not the best for gardening. But I found a small sunny spot (since enlarged) and started digging. Literally. I dug the earth up with my hands and a few simple garden tools, and took out thousands of rocks. Unfortunately they keep growing back...
One thing I decided on from the very beginning was that no chemicals would enter the garden. I didn't want to poison not only the healthy herbs and vegetables I was to grow, but also our water, pumped up from underground streams. I built the soil strength (which was pretty good to begin with, thanks to ages of natural composting in the forest) with a little pure topsoil, organic manure, and lots of my own compost. And I used only natural methods to deal with the few pest problems which developed. And it's worked! Take that, chemical corporations!

    Herbs I Grow
I decided to separate my herb garden from everything else - it is still adjacent to the vegetables, but has it's own little design, enclosed with paths. It's not very big (about 18 X 24 feet), but in the space I have it's all I could do for now. Still, once it grows in it should look quite nice. And, most importantly, it is filled with many wonderful herbs!

    Intensive Gardening Methods

The purpose of an intensively grown garden is to harvest the most produce possible from a given space. More traditional gardens consist of long, single rows of vegetables spaced widely apart. Much of the garden area is taken by the space between the rows. An intensive garden reduces wasted space to a minimum. The practice of intensive gardening is not just for those with limited garden space; rather, an intensive garden concentrates work efforts to create an ideal plant environment, giving better yields with less labor. Though its benefits are many, the intensive garden may not be for everyone. Some people enjoy the sight of long, straight rows in their gardens. Others prefer machine cultivation. Weeding by hand or with hand tools is required in intensive plantings, although fewer weeds will be present due to the close plant spacings. Still other gardeners like to plant their gardens in a very short period of time and have harvests come in all at once. The intensive gardening ideal is to have something growing in every part of the garden at all times during the growing season. A good intensive garden requires early, thorough planning to make the best use of time and space. The interrelationships of plants must be considered before planting, including nutrient needs, shade tolerance, above- and below-ground growth patterns, and preferred growing seasons. Using the techniques described below, anyone can develop a high-yielding intensive garden.
