Hepatitis E Virus
1. Name of the Organism:
Hepatitis E Virus Hepatitis E Virus (HEV) has a particle diameter of 32-34 nm, a buoyant density of 1.29 g/ml in KTar/Gly gradient, and is very labile. Serologically related smaller (27-30 nm) particles are often found in feces of patients with Hepatitis E and are presumed to represent degraded viral particles. HEV has a single-stranded polyadenylated RNA genome of approximately 8 kb. Based on its physicochemical properties it is presumed to be a calici -like virus. 2. Nature of Acute Disease: The disease caused by HEV is called hepatitis E, or enterically transmitted non-A non-B hepatitis (ET-NANBH). Other names include fecal-oral non-A non-B hepatitis, and A-like non-A non-B hepatitis. Note: This disease should not be confused with hepatitis C, also called parenterally transmitted non-A non-B hepatitis (PT-NANBH), or B-like non-A non-B hepatitis, which is a common cause of hepatitis in the U.S. 3. Nature of Disease:

Hepatitis C is a life-threatening, blood borne disease of the liver. It is caused by a virus, and is far more easily transmitted than HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. It is suspected that there are, at present, more than 4.5 million people in the United States that are infected with hepatitis C, and more than 200 million around the world - far more people than are infected with HIV. Hepatitis C is rapidly becoming a global epidemic, and this makes hepatitis C one of the greatest public health threats faced in this century, and perhaps one of the greatest threats to be faced in the next century. Hepatitis is a disease characterized by inflammation of the liver, usually producing swelling and, in many cases, permanent damage to liver tissues. Liver disease strikes at the very heart of the body's functions and processes, and can be life-threatening. You cannot live without a liver. A number of different agents can cause hepatitis, including infectious diseases, chemical poisons, drugs and alcohol. Viral hepatitis refers to a set of at least six viruses that are known to cause hepatitis, which vary in their severity and characteristics. These are hepatitis A (HAV), hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), hepatitis D (HDV), hepatitis E (HEV), and hepatitis G (HGV). Hepatitis C can lead to serious, permanent liver damage, and in many cases, death. The Hepatitis C (HCV) virus was identified in 1989. Unlike the other types of viral hepatitis, hepatitis C is very difficult for the immune system to overcome. Hepatitis C is a one of a special set of viruses, called RNA viruses, which can outmanuever the human immune system. They do this by mutating rapidly, often evolving faster than the immune system can develop an effective response to them. Infections by RNA viruses like Hepatitis C are hard to beat - and can be very dangerous.

Hepatitis C Virus Infection in Cocaine Users: A Silent Epidemic
Researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin have found that up to one-third of cocaine users who thought they were healthy may be infected with hepatitis C. Hepatitis C can lead to chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver and even liver cancer. There is no cure or vaccine. It has been suggested by some researchers that Hepatitis C infection may be the major cause of liver disease in the United States. The use of alcohol may make the effects of Hepatitis C on the liver more severe. "Our observations suggest a significant epidemic in an unsuspecting population with little regular access to health care," notes study author Harold H. Harsch, MD

Smitsom leverbetændelse skyldes infektion med hepatitis A virus, og der findes ingen behandling. Virus findes i tarmen hos mennesker og overføres gennem drikkevand og ikke varmebehandlet mad ( salat, skaldyr etc. ).

Hepatitis B
By Howard J. Worman, M. D.
The Hepatitis B Virus (HBV)
HBV is a mostly double-stranded DNA virus in the Hepadnaviridae family. HBV causes hepatitis in human and related virus in this family cause hepatitis in ducks, ground squirrels and woodchucks. The HBV genome has four genes: pol, env, pre-core and X that respectively encode the viral DNA-polymerase, envelope protein, pre-core protein (which is processed to viral capsid) and protein X. The function of protein X is not clear but it may be involved in the activation of host cell genes and the development of cancer.
Risk Factors for HBV Infection
Although relatively rare in the United States, hepatitis B is endemic in parts of Asia where hundreds of millions of individuals may be infected. HBV is transmitted horizontally by blood and blood products and sexual transmission. It is also transmitted vertically from mother to infant in the perinatal period which is a major mode of transmission in regions where hepatitis B is endemic. The blood supply in developed countries has been screened for HBV for many years and at present transmission by blood transfusion is extremely rare. Major routes of transmission among adults in Western countries are intravenous drug use and sexual contact. The risk of HBV infection is notably high in promiscuous homosexual men but it is also transmitted sexually from men to women and women to men. Transmission is probably prevented by correct use of condoms. Health care workers and patients receiving hemodialysis are also at increased risk of infection.

About Hepatitis A:
Each year, an estimated 100 persons die as a result of acute liver failure in the United States due to hepatitis A . Approximately 30 - 50,000 cases occur yearly in the United States and the direct and indirect costs of these cases exceed $300 million . The unfortunate aspect of these statistics is that with 21st century medicine, hepatitis A is TOTALLY PREVENTABLE, and isolated cases, and especially outbreaks, NEED NOT OCCUR. Hepatitis A is one of five human hepatitis viruses that primarily infect the human liver and cause human illness. (There are many other viruses that can inflame the liver which infect us more generally.) The other known human hepatitis viruses are hepatitis B, C, D, and E. Hepatitis A is relatively unusual in nations with developed sanitation systems such as the United States. Nevertheless, it continues to occur here.
