Telbivudine, a Promising Experimental

HBV-specific L-nucleoside
Background
Sustained suppression of HBV replication is widely accepted to be key for reversing hepatic injury and improving long-term prognosis, and natural history studies suggest a link between the level of HBV replication and the risk of disease progression. Correspondingly, clinical disease progression is reduced with antiviral therapy in patients with HBV-associated cirrhosis. Interferon alfa has been used to treat chronic hepatitis B for more that ten years, although its use is associated with frequent undesirable side effects, and it is administered by injection. Interferon generally provides sustained viral suppression and improvements in liver disease only in the minority of patients who experience hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) seroconversion. Full Article

The management protocols for recurrent HCV are diverse and the issues are complex, including the effectiveness of preemptive therapy. The current study presents results of a retrospective review of liver transplant recipients receiving preemptive therapy of pegylated alfa-2b interferon (Peg-Intron) and ribavirin within 4 months of transplant.
Hepatic Fibrosis Influences Early Virological Response Rates in Chronic Hepatitis C

Early virological response (EVR), during HCV therapy is defined as undetectable HCV RNA or at least a 2-log decrease in HCV RNA at week 12. Failure to achieve this has been shown to accurately predict non-response.
Steroid-free Immunosuppression for Liver Transplantation Recipients with Hepatitis C

Recurrence of Hepatitis C (Hep C) has been a difficult dilemma in liver transplantation (OLT). There are differing reports concerning the effect of immunosuppression including the use of steroid, mycofenolate mofetil (MMF) and IL-2 antibody.

Story Tools PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (AP) The number of people sickened by a hepatitis A outbreak at a Mexican restaurant continued to climb, with state health officials confirming at least 300 cases Tuesday. Of the cases linked to a Chi-Chi's Restaurant about 25 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, 31 were in Ohio, eight in West Virginia, one in Florida, and one in South Carolina. The outbreak is believed to have begun as early as September, state Health Department spokesman Richard McGarvey said. The restaurant voluntarily closed November 2, and has not reopened. Seattle lawyer William Marler said his firm has already filed a lawsuit against the restaurant.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at increased risk of becoming infected with both the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and the hepatitis A virus (HAV). Although these viruses can be transmitted in different ways, both can be spread through sexual activity. Hepatitis is a serious disease that can be fatal. Fortunately, both hepatitis B and hepatitis A can be prevented by safe and effective vaccines. Unfortunately, many men at risk remain unprotected. What is hepatitis B?
Hepatitis B is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a virus (HBV) that attacks the liver. The virus is found in the blood and semen of infected men and is spread in the same manner as HIV. HBV is easier to catch than HIV because it is more than 100 times more concentrated in an infected person's blood and can exist on surfaces outside the body. What is hepatitis A?

Low hepatitis vaccine rates found among Vietnamese-American kids
CHICAGO (AP) A study of three large Vietnamese-American communities found extremely low rates of vaccination among youngsters for hepatitis B, a sometimes fatal liver disease that is prevalent among Vietnamese adults. Poor access to health care as well as treatment by doctors whose training in Vietnam did not emphasize preventive care were among possible reasons cited for the low rates.

    1. Name of the Organism:
Hepatitis A Virus Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is classified with the enterovirus group of the Picornaviridae family. HAV has a single molecule of RNA surrounded by a small (27 nm diameter) protein capsid and a buoyant density in CsCl of 1.33 g/ml. Many other picornaviruses cause human disease, including polioviruses, coxsackieviruses, echoviruses, and rhinoviruses (cold viruses). 2. Nature of Acute Disease: The term hepatitis A (HA) or type A viral hepatitis has replaced all previous designations: infectious hepatitis, epidemic hepatitis, epidemic jaundice, catarrhal jaundice, infectious icterus, Botkins disease, and MS-1 hepatitis. 3. Nature of Disease: CDC Case Definition What is a "Case Definition"? Overview of Public Health Surveillance Hepatitis A is usually a mild illness characterized by sudden onset of fever, malaise, nausea, anorexia, and abdominal discomfort, followed in several days by jaundice. The infectious dose is unknown but presumably is 10-100 virus particles. 4. Diagnosis of Human Illness:
