3. Pogstar Hedgehogs - A Family Operated Pet Hedgehog Breeder.
know us and our hedgehogs, finding out more about what kind of care they need, what truly wonderful pets they can be, and whether they are the right pet for you
http://www.pogstarhedgehogs.com/
Welcome To PogStar Hedgehogs!
We are a small family operated pet hedgehog breeder located near Wichita, Kansas. From our family to yours, we are dedicated to breeding the best tempered, and healthiest hedgehogs possible!
A little bit about Us! William and I purchased our first hedgehog as a pet while still dating, back in the fall of 1996, and were completely enchanted by what a wonderful and intelligent creature our Annabella was.
During the winter of 1998, our son Connor, then just shy of one year, became fascinated with watching and babbling at Annabella, and our less than friendly hedgie truly seemed to enjoy listening to him. We were all rewarded by this unusual friendship when Bella became much easier to handle and one of Connor’s first words was “BA”, asking for her.
The more I studied how to care for Annabella, the more interested I became in hedgehogs in general, and after quite a bit of research and thought I purchased three more hedgehogs in the late winter of 1999, and became USDA licensed as a breeder in April of 2000.
One of my favorite developments in the history of the PogStar was when my husband William became much more involved in the business during my pregnancy with Morgan. While he has always supported my interest in the hedgehogs, his development and care of the website, followed by him stepping in to provide physical care during the worst of my pregnancy has led him to become very involved in not only the muscle part of the job (which I deeply appreciate, and is the ONLY reason we are able to keep the number of animals we do) but also in the planning and the playing that make these creatures such a joy for our entire family.

The most popular exotic pets include rabbits , guinea pigs, gerbils, hamsters , mice, rats, chinchillas, prairie dogs, hedgehogs, ferrets, pot-bellied pigs, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, and fish. Hedgehogs are nocturnal and therefore are active in the evenings. If they are allowed to run in the house, they tend to hide in corners or under furniture. Many hedgehogs dig in carpets or in houseplants and dirt if accessible and will forage for spiders and insects in the home. Most hedgehogs prefer quiet environments and may react with fright at loud noises. They prefer dimmed lighting to bright sunlight or room lights. Although hedgehogs are being bred commercially, their behavior is that of a non-domesticated animal. While young hedgies do not mind being held, many adults resist handling and struggle to be let loose. Adult females tend to allow handling more than adult males. Many individuals do not interact with humans, no matter how much handling they received when they were young. Very few hedgehogs bite, but they might "puff up," and adult males may hiss. They are solitary animals except for mating, and usually must be housed separately even if raised with a same-sex littermate.

  • What is a Hedgehog? Hedgehogs are a small, insectivorous (insect eating) mammal that can be found throughout the world. They are native to England, Europe, Africa and Asia. The hedgehog that is now kept as a pet in North America is the Pygmy Hedgehog from Central Africa.
Since there are no native species of hedgehog in either Canada or the United States, many people still mistake the domestic hedgehog for the porcupine - an entirely different and unrelated animal. While porcupine quills are extremely sharp, barbed and very dangerous, the hedgehog quill is smooth and not nearly as sharp. Petting a friendly hedgehog can be compared to petting a hairbrush - bristly, not prickly.
Your pet should be kept indoors at normal room temperature (70 to 80*F); can be fed a good quality dry cat food or a specially formulated hedgehog food.

Finding a reputable breeder in your area can be challenging. There are some resources on the web to assist you in finding your perfect companion. Hedgehog Central site has a fairly up to date page on Hedgehog Breeders in the U.S. and Canada Some people prefer to adopt a "rescue" hedgehog, which we define as one that has been given up voluntarily by its owner. These hedgehogs often have special needs and have not been well socialized, but with patience and love, can make excellent pets for a loving home. Hedgehogs Hedgehogs are amazingly cute little insectivores who can be quite friendly despite their unapproachable prickly appearance. Of course, one must pet a hedgehog very carefully... The pet hedgehog (also known as the African Pygmy Hedgehog ) is originally native to Africa, and is much smaller than the European hedgehog . The pet hedgehog has several color variations. Their backs are covered in short, very sharp spines, but their tummies have a soft short hair coat. If upset, the spines stand erect and form an impenetrable barrier from head to tail, and if they feel very threatened they roll into a complete ball, with only spines showing. However, when calm and content, the spines are laid back and the hedgehog is quite easily handled. For color variations look at this Web site: International Hedgehog Club (IHC) Choosing a Healthy Hedgehog: You will want to choose a single hedgehog since they are solitary and don’t normally like to share a cage. Never buy a male and female to be placed in the same cage unless you intend to breed! Hedgehogs are ready to breed as early as 8 weeks and females should never be bred before 5 months, so be careful! You may decide to either go to a pet store or check ads and buy from a breeder. In either case, you are looking for a good healthy animal.

Hedgehog Care When you bring you new hedgehog home, place him in his cage and let him have absolute privacy for at least a day. You may pick him up and hold him once or twice for a few minutes the first day, but remember, it will probably be more like a week before he begins to feel at home. Baby hedgehogs need quite a bit of sleep the first month after they come home with you, so don't be too concerned if he sleeps a lot at first. Daily Routine: You will need to attend to your hedgehog's needs on a daily basis. Here are some basic suggestions:
  • Scoop the litter box. Fill the food dish. Provide fresh water. Make sure any mess such as spilled food etc. is cleaned out of the shavings. Clean off any messy toys. Love your pet.
Handling: Housing: Your hedgehog will require a secure home since they are very good climbers and can easily escape from open-topped cages that are designed for animals such as guinea pigs and rabbits. If you do use a cage with an open top, it must have slippery sides that are at least 12" high and a floor space of at least l6” x 24”. A 20 gallon aquarium is ideal. It must also have good circulation and be well lit but not exposed to direct sunlight during the daytime. Place your hedgehogs cage in a comfortable, warm, well lit area that is free of drafts and direct sunlight. They are most comfortable at temperatures of between 65-80 degrees Fahrenheit. (18-27 degrees Celsius) The basic rule of thumb is, if you are comfortable without a sweater, they will do just fine.

How do I take care of a hedgehog?
Hedgehogs are small exotic pets that are becoming increasingly popular. Caring for a hedgehog is easy, but they have some special needs.
The hedgehog is an interesting, exotic pet that is becoming very popular. Hedgehogs are cute little furless creatures that are quite timid. According to "Exotic Pet Care" published by Wingers Publishing, hedgehogs are usually friendly. Some mature hedgehogs do not like to be held and will try to get away. Hedgehogs rarely bite, but they may curl up into a ball, puff out their quills, and hiss when frightened. "Exotic Pet Care" goes on to say, hedgehogs will sometimes behave strangely by salivating and foaming at the mouth. They may react this way when something new, such as an unfamiliar odor, is encountered. This behavior is quite normal and should not be a cause for concern. The same article recommends housing a hedgehog in an enclosure that has a solid bottom and sides high enough to prevent escape. Aquariums and pet taxis make good enclosures. They can be lined with pine shavings or shredded newspaper. To help keep the cage clean for a longer period of time, droppings should be removed each day. The entire cage should be thoroughly cleaned at least once a week, depending on the type of bedding being used. If strong cleaners are used, be sure to thoroughly rinse the cage to avoid exposing the hedgehog to harmful fumes. "Exotic Pet Care" suggests equipping the cage with an exercise wheel designed especially for hedgehogs. Wire wheels are not safe for hedgehogs and should not be used. Since hedgehogs are timid creatures, you may want to provide a place to hide within the cage. A paper lunch sack works well, since it is disposable and easily replaced.
