Heavens Gate Timeline
March 26, 1997 - W.W. Higher Source - Up to 39 bodies were found by sheriff's deputies inside a multimillion-dollar mansion in Rancho Santa Fe, an exclusive community in northern San Diego County. Victims of an apparent mass suicide, the dead were mostly white males and females with some Latinos ages 18 and 24, with tightly cropped hair, dressed alike in dark pants and black Nikes. Initial reports have identified them as members of W.W. Higher Source, a self-sufficient new-age quasi-Christian group sustaining itself by developing Web pages. Welcome to the millennium!
March 27, 1997 - A day after the discovery of the mass suicide, the Higher Source Web site the busiest site on the net remains boastful of the company's programming capabilities. On its Homepage the accompanying Java applet states: "Welcome to Higher Source your best source for Website Design, graphics & animation. Higher Source-computer programming - Java, CGI, Perl, FoxPro & many other languages. Higher Source-RealAudio, ShockWave, QuickTime movies, 3D modeling, VRML & Web site Design." The Web site itself features pictures of stars and nebulae dowloaded from the NASA site, and appears as business-like as anything else on the Web. Heaven's Gate another web site designed by the Higher Source team cryptically states that suicide is acceptable for cult members who want to ascend to a "higher level of life." In this case the "higher level of life" refers to a spaceship behind the Hale-Bopp comet.

The whole cult phenomena, particularly the Heavens Gate cult, revolves around faith. Remember that this cult didn't just appear the day before they killed themselves, this group has a 22 year history, a history based on the charismatic leadership of their leader, Applewhite. In the mind of cult members god spoke to Applewhite and Applewhite in turn instructed the cult about gods will. This is not so dissimilar to the method of Jesus Christ's teachings, as the son of god he knew gods will and taught it to his followers. Sometime in their history these cult members had attained real faith in Applewhite's words and at the very crux of faith is the blind leap. The action that can not be supported by empirical evidence by rather by what has been drilled into them by church leaders. Foolish you say? Within a block of where you are currently sitting there is likely to be dozen people who emphatically believe that when they die they will go to heaven, or hell, or be reborn until they attain enlightenment. There are many others but the point is all religions are based upon this leap of faith, there is no evidence to support allegations of afterlife except the scriptures that define the religions themselves. But these scriptures can hardly be considered unbiased on the matter. Trusting the word of scripture to make an argument for afterlife is like giving up control of the language to your adversary in a debate. When all the terms are defined by your opponent you are bound to lose.

Introduction

Do's Intro: Purpose - Belief
What Our Purpose Is - The Simple "Bottom Line"
The sole task that was given to this member from the Kingdom of Heaven was to offer the way leading to membership into the Kingdom of Heaven Our mission is exactly the same. I am in the same position to today's society as was the One that was in Jesus then. My being here now is actually a continuation of that last task as was promised, to those who were students 2000 years ago. They are here again, continuing in their own overcoming, while offering the same transition to others. Our only purpose is to offer the discipline and "grafting" required of this transition into membership in My Father's House. My Father, my Older Member, came with me this time for the first half of this task to assist in the task because of its present difficulty. Looking to us, and desiring to be a part of my Father's Kingdom, can offer to those with deposits that chance to connect with the Level Above Human, and begin that transition. Your separation from the world and reliance upon the Kingdom of Heaven through its Representatives can open to you the opportunity to become a new creature, one of the Next Evolutionary Level, rightfully belonging to the Kingdom of Heaven.
Why It Is Difficult To Believe or Accept Us
We don't know if you believe in the real existence of negative or "lower" forces. If you do, then you may be able to understand or relate to some of what we are about to say. It seems that how your "programming" permits you to see or identify those forces, determines the limit of your acceptance or understanding. Many believe that there are "evil" acts or even "evil" individuals, but would draw the line before they would believe in evil spirits, evil discarnates, negative influences, malevolent space aliens, "Luciferians," or Satan and his fallen angels.

Surfing for Salvation
Once prophets roamed the world recruiting the lost and lonely to spread their tales of redemption. Today, the spiritual world is working its way onto the web.
A knock and the website will be opened to you at Heavens Gate
It is Judea the year zero, and you're a prophet unknown in your own land. You have a message of earth-shattering importance, but no phones, faxes TV or web - you have to rely on 12 loyal friends to spread your teachings by word of mouth.
The Romans, who occupy your country, aren't too big on free speech - especially when it attacks their own religion, and most of the rabbis aren't too keen on competition from an upstart evangelist. Let's face it the chances of you becoming the figurehead of a globally successful religious cult are slim. It's anywhere on planet Earth, the late 1990s. You too are convinced that you have the word for which the spiritually-bereft people of the world have been waiting. Your friends and family may dismiss you as a fruitcake, but Jesus Christ had a hard time of it in the early days, too.
You may only have a small band of acolytes, but never mind - you have a PC, a modem, a phoneline and access to the world wide web. You have, in other words, access to the potential computer-owning constituency of 5.7bn people worldwide - from England to Iceland to Ethiopia, believers, non-believers and those still searching. You have access to their attention, their minds and - possibly - their wallets, and no government, however religiously oppressive, can stop you selling your brand to those people. Now which these scenarios sounds the better bet for success?

Heaven's Gate cult made visit to Chico
Matt Notley News Editor -Wednesday, April 2, 1997 By now, most everyone has heard about the 39 members of the HeavenÕs Gate religious cult who took their lives in a bizarre mass suicide in Rancho Santa Fe, an affluent San Diego suburb. Most members were apparently led into the cult with promises of shedding their earthly bodies for a rendezvous with an alien spaceship that would take them to the heavens, various national news reports have said. The cultÕs drive to recruit members even passed through Chico three years ago, when the group toured the country holding promotional public meetings at college campuses. But by all accounts, it doesnÕt seem the cult was successful in gaining members in Chico. In a San Francisco Chronicle article, staff writer David Dietz reported that the cult had been suffering a drop in members and mounted a heavy recruiting tour in 1994. An information graphic of a map on the HeavenÕs Gate web page identified 63 cities, mainly college towns, that the cult visited and dotted Chico as one of the stops. According to the web page, the cultÕs primary means of notifying the public of the meetings were by placing posters on bulletin boards and telephone poles. At some campuses, the cult rented classrooms for their meetings and tried to get as much media attention as possible, sometimes appearing on local radio programs.

Special Section — Heaven's Gate Suicide Heaven's Gate, the cult that in late March (1997) took their lives in a mass suicide, disturbed many people with their actions. But, unlike other cults, it wasn't their overt day-to-day activities that upset their neighbors. In fact, this general non-offensiveness is partly what caught the few who knew of them completely off-guard. You'd expect the outspoken, obnoxious "wackos" to perhaps do something like this, or at least it wouldn't come as too large a shock. But this group was different. When the first reports came in, after the police had discovered the site, no one knew what to think. The concept of a group, so quiet and unassuming that they could've been one's OWN neighbors, doing this kind of thing left many in a shock. The terms "irrational" and "crazy" were thrown around. But I knew better. Granted, I obviously wasn't advocating these people to be the pinnacle of sanity, but I knew they had to have a reason for doing this, some guiding purpose, no matter how odd or unusual. Teaming up with Morning Wren, we took a thorough look at the information from the cult still available on the Internet. From this, the puzzle began to come together . . .

Not far from the Heaven's Gate suicide scene stands the terra cotta-roofed mansion named Beth-Sarim (Hebrew for "House of Princes") built in 1929 by the Watchtower organization, better known as Jehovah's Witnesses. "Transplanting organs is really cannibalism," current Watchtower President Milton G. Henschel told FREE PRESS religion writer Hiley B. Ward in 1968, when he was still rising through the sect's leadership ranks. The sect banned organ transplants and even skin grafting for thirteen years, but then dropped the ban suddenly in 1980, without any apology to members who had gone blind refusing cornea transplants or relatives of those who had died refusing kidneys. However, before selling their San Diego mansion in 1948, Henschel's associates drew up their ban on blood transfusions, a ban that has "led thousands to die needlessly" according to charges cited recently in

"Heaven's Gate" Religious Cult
by Bob Soetebier On the Thursday, March 27, 1997, edition of the NBC "Today" show's coverage of the 39-people mass suicide by the "Heaven's Gate" religious cult they interviewed a physicist (didn't catch his name) who was supposed to be an expert researcher on religious cults. He mentioned that back in 1844 there was *another* "Heaven's Gate" cult known as "Moorites." The 1844 Moorites (100,000 of them!) were followers of a man named Moore (didn't catch his first name). Moore preached that a comet was the harbinger of imminent earth cataclysm (End of the World). The physicist said that Moore instructed his followers to take off all of their clothes and climb onto the roofs of their houses on the night of the either the Spring Equinox or just before Easter (can't remember exactly which he said for sure). The purpose of this was supposed to be so that they would be "closer to Heaven" and make it "easier for the angels" (possibly from "spacecraft" that's what the physicist said Moore told them) to pick them up and take them up to "Heaven's Gate." The physicist said that Moore's theory was that with the harbinger (the comet) of the imminent End of the World that "Heaven's Gate" (which Moore and his followers were convinced was of limited *physical* dimensions on another plane) that it was imperative for he and his followers to get a head start to/through it before it became jammed/overcrowded with the coming inundation of all the souls/spirits from the mass of humanity that would soon perish! Moore preached that only so many souls/spirits could pass through "Heaven's Gate" (again, because of its presumed physical limitations) at one time.

Overview:
We define Doomsday/Destructive/Apocalyptic cults to be religiously based, very high intensity, controlling groups that have caused or are liable to cause loss of life among their membership or the general public. It is important to realize that out of the tens of thousands of new religious groups worldwide, only a very few meet these criteria. We do not include terrorist groups in the above definition, because their goals are primarily political, not religious. However, groups lie Al Quiada (The Source) do have some points of similarities with destructive religious cults.
What is behind the death of members of destructive cults?
No consensus exists concerning the motivation for the loss of life within this handful of cults: Some in the Anti-Cult Movement claim that much of this loss of life among cult members was the result of mass suicides ordered by the group leadership. That opinion fits well with their now-discredited belief that cult memberships have been the victims of mind control techniques . Having little self-will, they have been willing to follow any order from the leadership even one leading to self destruction.

I. Group Profile
  • Name: Heaven's Gate The group was known by various names over the twenty-two years of its existence. In the early years, at least, the group did not give itself a name. Hence, several of its names were given to it by outsiders. Robert Balch, a sociologist who studied the group during its early life, referred to them as the "Bo and Peep UFO Cult." News reporters often referred to the group as HIM ["human individual metamorphosis"], picking up on a key teaching of the group. They referred to themselves simply as "the group," and their leaders as "TheTwo." In a newspaper advertisement taken out by the groupin 1994, they referred to themselves as "Total Overcomers Anonymous." "Heaven's Gate," the name of their Web Site, is apparently the name they settled on near the end of the life of the group.

TIME TO DIE FOR GOD? or ARMAGEDDON WHICH SIDE ARE YOU ON?
We are at the end of an Age, or the end of another civilization. As was prophesied, this is the "judgment time" for all living creatures on or related to this planet in other words, the time when "where we find ourselves," as a result of our accumulated choices during our time here, determines our Judgment. The choices of many will find them in a "mind set" that would see the above statements as "cultish," radical, and doomsdayish, to say the least, while others have chosen to seek mental nourishment that would have them suspect "Truth" in these statements. With little awareness of it, all of us at this time are finding ourselves aligning with others of common mind. This commonness becomes our mental preoccupation. Though subconscious, it takes the form of our determination or judgment of what is RIGHT or GOOD, or who is superior, or has been suppressed or wronged. Some are also preoccupied with racial supremacy, which religious concept is truly God's, and who presently represents the real "Satan." At the close of an Age there are:
      1. Some individuals who have connected with that Representative and separated from humanness enough to move into MEMBERSHIP in that Next Kingdom, and into a physical body belonging to that Kingdom Level Above Human;
