You hear the same question. Is this global warming ? This year, with the massive western wildfires, not to mention the drought afflicting 40 percent of the United States, the question is particularly urgent. Are the ominous predictions about Earth's climate from 10 to 20 years ago finally coming true? Are we entering a "greenhouse century" of rising seas, shriveled crops, animal extinctions and intense heat waves? Or is the present warming just another blip on the murky, ever-changing pattern we call climate? Researchers predict that the sea will rise 40 to 60 centimeters in the next century. Atoll nations, which sit only a few feet above sea level, worry about rising seas. Sea level rise may also affect fresh water, sanitation, agriculture, fishing, housing and the rest of the economy. Why is our climate changing?
The atmosphere of the earth contains the air that we breathe, protects us from radiation and keeps our planet warm. Gases in our atmosphere, called "greenhouse gases", hold in the heat. About a hundred and fifty years ago, we began to burn large amounts of fossil fuels (oil, coal and natural gas) to create power and heat. These fuels release carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into our air. In fact, billions of tons of greenhouse gases are added to the atmosphere every year. This is like throw-ing an extra blanket on the bed - it traps in more heat and warms our planet, causing our climate to change. And this will, in turn, affect our weather.
What happens during a heat wave?

Cleveland, Clinton, and Texas Heat Waves
by Jacob G. Hornberger , October 1998 To relieve the suffering in the drought-stricken counties of Texas, Congress passed an appropriations bill, but it was vetoed by the president. In his veto message, the president stated: "I can find no warrant for such an appropriation in the Constitution, and I do not believe that the power and duty of the General Government ought to be extended to the relief of individual suffering which is in no manner properly related to the public service or benefit. The friendliness and charity of our countrymen can always be relied upon to relieve their fellow-citizens in misfortune. This has been repeatedly and quite lately demonstrated. Federal aid in such cases encourages the expectation of paternal care on the part of the Government and weakens the sturdiness of our national character, while it prevents the indulgence among our people of that kindly sentiment and conduct which strengthens the bonds of a common brotherhood." The year was 1887 and the president was Democrat Grover Cleveland.

Listen in RealAudio

Hi, I'm Bryan Yeaton with The Weather Notebook's weekly segment on Global Climate Change. Why is it that people in Houston can deal with 105 degrees Fahrenheit fairly well, but such readings in Paris caused a disaster this past summer? The answer might be: it's not the heat, it's the variability. Larry Kalkstein is a heat expert at the University of Delaware.
LK: Let's take the United States. Among the most vulnerable cities are Philadelphia, St. Louis, ChicagoMidwestern and Eastern cities which have high summer variability of climate. By that I mean you have mostly days in the 80s punctuated by these extreme heat waves where the temperature can go up to 100 or more. The big Question is, if climate change occurs, is the climate of Philadelphia going to just get warmer, and the variability is going to stay the same, or even get less? That is, will Philly's climate begin to imitate Jacksonville, Florida's, where not many people die of the heat because it's consistently hot? Or, will just the extremes get hotter in Philadelphia, whereas the rest of the baseline climate remains just the same and the extremes get hotter? And this is one question that the climate modelers can't answer with great precision, because they don't handle climate variability that well. So places like Philly should be able to cope if the typical summer day warms up but the extremes don't get any worse. And what if the variations do get worse?

US think-tank predicts more heat waves
Last modified on October 13th 2003
The Earth Policy Institute (EPI) has released a document on the heat wave that scorched Europe in August 2003, from which at least 35,000 people died. The EPI is US based think-tank which studies environmentally sustainable economies - eco-economies. The EPI warns that such deaths are likely to increase, as "even more extreme weather events lie ahead". EPI document.

Interpretive Summary:
Hot weather can markedly reduce growth and efficiency of feedlot cattle. When hot weather persists for several days (often referred to as a heat wave), death losses sometimes occur. Ambient conditions which adversely affect the animals can be profiled by evaluating past heat waves. Using that approach, characteristics were developed for 6 categories of heat waves, ranging from mild to extreme. The characteristics and frequency of occurrence of heat waves in each category serve as a guide to the selection and operation of heat relief measures (e.g., shades, fans, sprinkling) appropriate for specific locations. This should provide a basis for improved environmental management of feedlot cattle in hot weather.

The hidden, human cost of heat waves
ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) Every year, natural disasters wreak havoc in the United States, producing dramatic scenes and billions of dollars in damages. But while major storms and earthquakes may garner more headlines and incur heavier financial losses, a less obvious weather phenomenon heat waves produce among the highest human costs of all such disasters. Statistics gathered by the World Health Organization show that heat waves account for the two top deadliest weather-related disasters in the United States over the last decade and three of the top five. While the financial damage from a heat wave may not be as high or as evident as that caused by a hurricane or earthquake, high temperatures do come at a cost. For instance, the WHO said government agencies spent $3.7 billion on a heat wave that struck pockets of the country in summer 1998. Top 10 deadliest weather-related phenomena in U.S. from 1990-2000

Human Rights Lawyers: No Immunity For Chinese Official for Genocide According to Chinese meteorologists, early this summer, from June 1st to August 2nd, a large part of China experienced high temperatures. The only regions in China that experienced cooler than normal temperatures was a small area of northern China between the Huang and Huai rivers, the southern part of northeastern China, and eastern Tibet. The rest of the country was impacted by a heat wave that was unprecedented in its duration. After the Summer Solstice, Fujian Province experienced unprecedented high temperatures and drought. There now have been new record high temperatures in almost half of the cities and counties in Fujian Province. According to the Jiangxi Province government, Jiangxi also experienced high temperatures and drought. Some rivers and 1,317 small reservoirs dried out and in some places people and animals lack drinkable water. The high temperature has continued in the Huang River and at the downstream areas of the Yangtze River. The highest daily temperatures in some places to the south of the Yangtze River range from 39 to 41 degrees Celsius. Thunderstorms occasionally occur in some local areas. In Shanghai, there has been more than 20 days this year where the temperature exceeded record highs.

Breastfeeding Seasonal Theme - Heat Wave, Don't Rave Heat Stroke (Heat-related illnesses) Introduction Heat-related Illnesses As summer and the heat waves come, there are more and more patients coming to seek medical advice and treatment for potential heat-related illness. In order to understand the pathogenesis of these heat-related illness, it is helpful to understand the three most important variables that affect temperature regulations : (1) increased endogenous heat production, (2) exogenous heat gain, and (3) decreased heat dispersion. Any factor that increases the amount of heat produced or diminishes the amount of heat dissipated can potentially exceed the capacity of the body to adjust to these heat stressors and produce a heat illness. Increased Endogenous Heat Production The three main elements responsible for an increase in endogenous heat production are febrile illnesses, physical activity, and certain drugs. Patients with febrile illnesses or medical diseases like hyperthyroidism have an increased metabolic rate that increases the heat burden. Vigorous physical activity increases endogenous heat production. If the environment impedes heat loss as in the humid and hot weather, exercise can increase core temperature by 1¢XC (1.8¢XF) every 5 min. A number of drugs are associated with hyperthermia, e.g.cocaine, amphetamines, and tricyclic-antidepressants can increase endogenous heat production.
