Heat is one of the most underrated and least understood of the deadly weather phenomena. In contrast to the visible, destructive and violent characteristics associated with deadly weather, like floods and tornadoes, a heat wave is a "silent killer". Heat deaths occur quietly, without headline-making destruction. Many people don't realize how deadly a heat wave can be. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that on average, 384 people die each year, nationwide from excessive heat. More than lightning, tornadoes, floods and hurricanes combined! Long before we experience protracted, detectable heat waves from global warming, we experience the effects of a more unstable climate altered drought and rainfall patterns, more intense storms, more temperature extremes, unseasonal weather events and more intense and severe downpours.
Extreme Weather Profile: 2004
Findings published in the journal Science in September, 2000, reinforced previous projections of increasingly destructive weather as climate change progresses. That study follows two previous studies by Karl et al. which had established the connection between greenhouse warming and extreme weather events: " Trends in U.S. Climate during the Twentieth Century , Consequences, Spring, 1995, Vol. 1, No. 1, Thomas Karl et al. Also: The Coming Climate by Thomas R. Karl, Neville Nicholls and Jonathan Gregory, Scientific American, May, 1997. A 2003 report by the World Water Council noted a steady increase in extreme weather events over the past 40 years with "major flood disasters" rising from 7 in the 1970s, to 18 in the 1980s to 26 in the 1990s.

Why Talk About Extreme Heat?
Heat can kill by pushing the human body beyond its limits. Under normal conditions, the body's internal thermostat produces perspiration that evaporates and cools the body. However, in extreme heat and high humidity, evaporation is slowed and the body must work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature. Elderly people, young children, and those who are sick or overweight are more likely to become victims of extreme heat. Because men sweat more than women, they are more susceptible to heat illness because they become more quickly dehydrated. The duration of excessive heat plays an important role in how people are affected by a heat wave. Studies have shown that a significant rise in heat-related illnesses happens when excessive heat lasts more than two days. Spending at least two hours per day in air conditioning significantly cuts down on the number of heat-related illnesses. Studies have shown that a significant rise in heat-related illnesses happens when excessive heat lasts more than two days.

The hidden, human cost of heat waves
ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) Every year, natural disasters wreak havoc in the United States, producing dramatic scenes and billions of dollars in damages. But while major storms and earthquakes may garner more headlines and incur heavier financial losses, a less obvious weather phenomenon heat waves produce among the highest human costs of all such disasters. Statistics gathered by the World Health Organization show that heat waves account for the two top deadliest weather-related disasters in the United States over the last decade and three of the top five. While the financial damage from a heat wave may not be as high or as evident as that caused by a hurricane or earthquake, high temperatures do come at a cost. For instance, the WHO said government agencies spent $3.7 billion on a heat wave that struck pockets of the country in summer 1998. Top 10 deadliest weather-related phenomena in U.S. from 1990-2000

An interview with Eric Klinenberg
author of Heat Wave: A Social Autopsy of Disaster in Chicago
Question: Take us back to July 1995 in the city of Chicago. How hot was it? What were the city and its residents going through? Klinenberg: The heat made the city's roads buckle. Train rails warped, causing long commuter and freight delays. City workers watered bridges to prevent them from locking when the plates expanded. Children riding in school buses became so dehydrated and nauseous that they had to be hosed down by the Fire Department. Hundreds of young people were hospitalized with heat-related illnesses. But the elderly, and especially the elderly who lived alone, were most vulnerable to the heat wave. Question: How many people died as a result of the heat wave?

The heat index, which measures how the temperature actually feels on the body, would hit 126 degrees by the time the day was over. Meteorologists had been warning residents about a two-day heat wave, but these temperatures did not end that soon. When the heat wave broke a week later, city streets had buckled; the records for electrical use were shattered; and power grids had failed, leaving residents without electricity for up to two days. And by July 20, over seven hundred people had perishedmore than twice the number that died in the Chicago Fire of 1871, twenty times the number of those struck by Hurricane Andrew in 1992in the great Chicago heat wave, one of the deadliest in American history. Though we seldom hear about them, during a typical year more people die in heat waves in the United States than in all other natural disasters combined. Until now, no one could explain either the overwhelming number or the heartbreaking manner of the deaths resulting from the 1995 Chicago heat wave. Meteorologists and medical scientists have been unable to account for the scale of the trauma, and political officials have puzzled over the sources of the city's vulnerability. In

Death in heat waves
Simple preventive measures may help reduce mortality Increasing evidence shows that atmospheric carbon dioxide levels are rising and are causing global warming. Record air temperatures were recorded in Britain during the last month. Accurate estimates of the consequences of these must wait until daily mortality data are available, but press reports indicate that the hot weather caused around 1000 deaths during one week alone in Britain and perhaps 10 000 overall in France, where temperatures were
