Valvular Heart Disease
HeartPoint animation: this will take approximately 1 minute to load.
It is easily understood that the muscle that we call the heart must continue to pump with adequate force to pump the blood that the body needs. "Valves" however are extremely important to the heart's efficiency. These delicate structures allow for the efficient flow of blood progressively forward through the heart's chambers, maximizing the efficiency of the heart muscle's work.
To review the flow of blood through the heart, you can check out "The Heart" animation. link
In the animation above, the Tricuspid Valve (between the right atrium and right ventricle) and the Pulmonic Valve (between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery) are illustrated to be working normally. After the right ventricle contracts, pressure is low in the chamber. The Tricuspid Valve, which had been closed from the pressure generated from the ventricle's contraction, now opens as the pressure of the blood from the right atrium has built up while the Tricuspid Valve was closed. The right ventricle will again contract, closing the Tricuspid Valve again, and pushing open the Pulmonic Valve. Once the right ventricle completes its contraction, the pressure in the pulmonary artery will be higher than in the right ventricle, and the Valve will close.
The valves on the left side of the heart, the Aortic Valve and the Mitral Valve however, are not working properly. Blood returns from the lungs and empties into the left atrium. In this illustration, the Mitral Valve opens properly when the left ventricle is finished contracting, and allows blood to flow into the left ventricle easily. When the left ventricle contracts however, blood is shown to flow back into the left atrium through the Mitral Valve. This backward flow of blood is called

Women and heart disease. Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the number onecause of death among US women. Research on Women and heart disease.
http://www.ahrq.gov/research/womheart.htm
Women and Heart Disease
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the number one cause of death among U.S. women. The survival rate following a heart attack is lower among women than men. Recent research indicates several possible reasons, including differences in diagnosis, treatment, symptoms, reaction to drugs, and age at the onset of the disease.
Introduction
Coronary heart disease (CHD) was responsible for one of every five deaths in the United States in 1997. Long thought of as primarily affecting men, we now know that CHD also affects a substantial number of women. More U.S. women die from heart disease than any other cause. Experts estimate that 1 in 2 women will die of heart disease or stroke, compared with 1 in 25 women who will die of breast cancer. Current statistics reveal significant differences between men and women in survival following a heart attack. For example, 42 percent of women who have heart attacks die within 1 year compared with 24 percent of men.
Research on Women and Heart Disease
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) supports a vigorous women's health research program, including research focused on CHD in women.

Holiday stresses may increase risk of heart disease
October 12, 1999 Web posted at: 4:07 p.m. EDT (2007 GMT) VIDEO Health Correspondent Holly Firfer reports. Windows Media (CNN) As the holiday season approaches, researchers warn this festive time of year may be hazardous to your health. A study in this week's Circulation, a journal of the American Heart Association, found December and January have the highest number of deaths from coronary artery disease. "When we get closer and closer to the holiday season, our risks of dying from heart disease appears to be increased," cardiologist Steve Manoukain said.

109. Exercise And Heart Disease
EXERCISE AND heart disease The American Heart Association has now added lack of exercise to the list of major risk factors for heart disease.
http://www.jhbmc.jhu.edu/cardiology/rehab/exercise.chd.html
EXERCISE AND HEART DISEASE The American Heart Association has now added " lack of exercise" to the list of major risk factors for heart disease. The other risk factors are smoking, high blood pressure, and high blood cholesterol.
Exercise not only helps fight heart disease, but for sedentary people, just adding a little exercise to your daily routine reduces the risk of high blood pressure, osteoporosis, breast and colon cancer, depression, anxiety and stress. Ideally, you should exercise three to five times a week for 20-50 minutes within your target heart rate. However, your health can benefit simply by accumulating 30 minutes of moderate activity per day, such as stair climbing, walking to work, or gardening.
Also, it is not just aerobic exercise such as walking, cycling, jogging and swimming that is recommended.Resistance training, or weight lifting, is an important component of a good fitness program because it increases your strength, leads to decreased body fat and helps improve blood cholesterol levels.
Benefits of Regular Exercise
  • Improves heart and lungs
  • Decreases resting blood pressure
  • Decreases body fat
  • Decreases total and LDL cholesterol ("bad cholesterol")

Linus Pauling lectures on Vitamin C and Heart Disease
August 13, 1993
By Michael Wooldridge, MAWooldridge@lbl.gov One of the great scientific mavericks of this century spoke at LBL August 10, 1993 at a special seminar hosted by the Life Sciences Division's Lipoprotein and Atherosclerosis Group. Linus Pauling, two-time Nobel laureate and the world's foremost vitamin C proponent, entertained an overflow crowd in the Bldg. 66 auditorium with a talk on Vitamin C and Heart Disease. The lively 92-year-old first gave a candid history of how he came to take up the vitamin C cause. He was introduced to the subject by biochemist Irwin Stone in 1966. Five years later, he would pen "Vitamin C and the Common Cold," and then boldly go on to champion vitamin C as a fighter of more serious diseases such as cancer. According to Pauling, the vitamin's versatility in illness prevention arises from its role in the manufacture of collagen, the protein that gives shape to connective tissues and strength to skin and blood vessels. One of the great misfortunes of human evolution, Pauling explained, was when our human ancestors lost their ability to manufacture vitamin C. Pauling thinks the trait was probably discarded at a time when our ancestors had a diet of vitamin-rich plants and didn't need to produce the vitamin themselves. This left today's primates (including humans) as one of the few groups of animals that must get the vitamin through the diet.

Heart Disease Program
Project Information
Group: Clinical Decision Making Group Project Leader: Bill Long wjl@mit.edu Purpose: To assist physicians in the diagnosis of patients with cardiac symptoms, focusing on hemodynamic dysfunction. Description: For predicting the effects of therapy we have developed a mechanism that uses equations for the hemodynamic relationships and a signal flow technique to calculate the likely quantitative steady-state change for all parameters given changes in therapies (or other parameter changes). This mechanism effectively captures the hemodynamic effects of the therapies on which it has been tested for a variety of pathophysiologic conditions.

120. MilkSucks.com: Got Heart Disease?
Got heart disease? 1 Osmo Turpeinen, Effect of CholesterolLowering Diet on MortalityFrom Coronary heart disease and Other Causes, Circulation, 59, No.
http://www.milksucks.com/heartdisease.html
Got Heart Disease? Heart disease is America's number one killer, taking as many lives as almost everything else combined. Every day, 3,000 Americans suffer from heart attacks, and more than 1,200 of them die. Those who don't die often suffer another heart attack later. Because we now know what causes heart attacks, we can prevent them. Since the early 1970s, study after study after study has implicated cow's milk and other dairy products as a cause of heart disease and clogged arteries. One researcher, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn from the Cleveland Clinic (the top-rated heart clinic in the U.S.), makes people "heart attack-proof" by putting them on a vegan diet (check out his groundbreaking paper in the American Journal of Cardiology , August 99). It's not just the fat and cholesterol in dairy products, but also the animal protein and milk carbohydrates that are linked to heart disease, as the following studies show: "International statistics indicate that there is a close correlation between the consumption of saturated fats (dairy fats and meat fats) and the mortality from coronary heart disease, and this conception has been confirmed by many epidemiological studies," concluded a study published in Circulation , a journal of the American Heart Association. "Practically total replacement of dairy fats by vegetable oils in the diets … was followed by a substantial reduction in the mortality of men from coronary heart disease. Total mortality also appeared to be reduced."
