    Healthy Snacks
    An extremely important part of training well is learning to follow a healthy diet. For athletes trying to practice and compete often, developing good habits with the snacks you choose can be critical to having the right kind of energy to draw upon. Some healthy snacks to build into your routine... For drinks: We suggest water , sport drinks, or unsweetened fruit juice. For sandwiches: Use whole grain bread, pita bread, or bagels with the following ingredients (get creative): plain tuna; turkey; boiled ham; lean roast beef; lean meats(95-98% fat free); lowfat cheese. Top off with lettuce, tomatoes, mustard, catsup or very small amounts of lowfat mayonnaise. Regular mayo is very high in fat. Getting into the habit of eating cut-up raw vegetables is also very healthy. Learn to eat them plain or with yogurt or other lowfat dips (avoid high fat dips). Things to avoid: Chips, snack cakes, candy, and soft drinks. If you have to eat cookies, try graham crackers, fig newtons, or ginger snaps.

    Busy families sometimes have trouble fitting in three healthy meals each day. Like it or not, snacking has become an important contributor to daily food intake. According to a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) survey of nearly 10,000 children, twice as many kids today eat snack foods, like crackers, popcorn, pretzels, and corn chips, as kids did just 20 years ago. Soda consumption has increased 37 percent for six- to nine-year-olds during the same time period. While children are eating extra calories, many still fall short on meeting their needs for vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin E, vitamin B , zinc, and iron. Whether eaten on the go or at home after school, healthy snacks are easy and quick to put together and eat, and offer important nutrients and energy in each delicious bite. Keep healthy beverages, such as water, juice, and soymilk, and snack foods, such as the ones listed in the table below, on-hand at home and encourage your children to pack them into their bags before leaving the house. With some creativity and a little luck, you can sneak a lot of good, nutritious food into your child's diet. Here are 10 hearty, healthy snacks to try out on your home team:
  • Rice cakes spread with applesauce and sprinkled with raisins;
  • Breakfast cereal served with bananas, raisins, and wheat germ, with or without milk;
  • Yogurt smoothies (for four): 1 cup of vanilla yogurt blended with 3 cups of fruit juice;
  • Frozen whole-grain waffles with strawberry topping (3/4 cup of strawberries mashed with 1 tablespoon of orange juice; refrigerate what you don't use);
  • Cored and sliced apples sprinkled with cinnamon and brown sugar, dotted with margarine, and baked at 400 degrees for 20 minutes. For this, a toaster oven works best;
