Smart Snacking Tips

  • Balance protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats in snacks to maintain steady blood sugar. For example, enjoy a few whole grain crackers or some nonfat yogurt paired with fresh fruit and a small handful of nuts such as walnuts or almonds. Choose high fiber, whole carbohydrates, such as fresh fruit and whole grains whenever possible. Adding some heart healthy fat to a snack is a good idea. Choose nuts, seeds, and avocado. A few olives and one or two tablespoons of natural, non-hydrogenated nut butters are good examples. Choose lean proteins for your snacks including: low fat or nonfat dairy products, sliced lean meat, and soy-based products, such as roasted soy nuts, steamed Edamame (whole green soybeans in the pod), soy cheese and soy yogurt. Space meals and snacks about three hours apart. It is especially important to snack if your meals are spaced more than four or five hours apart. Try to avoid sugary desserts and sweets. If you must have something sweet, make it as healthy as possible. A good example is an oatmeal raisin walnut cookie or non-hydrogenated peanut butter spread on whole grain bread and topped with your favorite jam or preserves.

Most people find that sticking to just three meals a day is too tall an order when their days are so long and exhausting, and I, for one, know that my energy level and mood drop if I don't give my stomach some food every couple of hours. The trouble is, it's very easy to slip into the habit of snacking on fatty and sugary foods, which may seem irresistible at the time, but can leave you feeling jittery and with a stomach like lead in the short term and add centimetres to your midriff in the long term. If eating small meals often boosts your efficiency, it's important not to fall into the trap of nibbling away absent-mindedly while you're concentrating on doing something else. This is because your mind only tends to focus on the task with which you're mainly concerned and won't fully register how much you're eating, so that before you know it you've demolished a large amount of food and yet still don't feel satisfied. The trick is to set aside a few minutes in which to do nothing but eat your snack. If you focus on enjoying it, you'll find that it energises you and enables you to concentrate better . You will also feel satiated so that you shouldn't be tempted to eat too much when your next meal comes along. Indeed, having a small snack when you're hungry can sometimes help to pull you back from the point of being so ravenously famished that you end up eating both far too much and too quickly, which will usually leave you feeling

I'm not sure what kids do in school all day, but it sure increases appetites. Every kid I know comes home from school starving! Easy to Reach Munchies My first line of defense it to hide the chips and cookies somewhere that little hands can't reach. (Yes, my home is not a totally chip-free zone.) The next step is to stock the house with easy snacks that just happen to be healthy:

S nack foods seem to be the hardest to think of especially ones that the family will enjoy. Maybe some of the ones I have listed below will help. Peanut butter is great on celery, apples and wheat bread, but for some real treats, try these quick healthy snacks!
Fill a cored apple with peanut butter and raisins. Eat and Enjoy. 1 tortilla (flour)
1 banana
peanut butter
dash of cinamon Spread the tortilla lightly with peanut butter. Peel the banana and place on the tortilla. Sprinkle with cinnamon and roll up like a burrito. Enjoy!

Wheat Germ
Chopped Peanuts Dip the banana slices in fruit juice and roll in wheat germ and peanuts. Serve immediately or it can be frozen for an even better treat.
