GREAT GREEN GOBS: AN EXPERIMENT WITH ALGAE Discussion As illustrated in Chesapeake: A Bay Trippers Adventure, underwater Bay grasses, also called SAV, are an extremely important part of the Bay's ecosystem. Bay grasses help to keep the water healthy by absorbing nutrients and producing oxygen. They provide food and shelter for many species, including the Blue Crab. The Bay has lost a large portion of its grass beds in recent years. One of the main causes for this decline has been a rise in run-off draining into the bay. Run-off is water that literally runs off the land, carrying soil, chemicals, and other debris with it. It fills the Bay with sediment and nutrients that lower the water quality. Water with high levels of nutrients produces algae. These microscopic plants grow so densely that they block sunlight from reaching underwater grasses. Without the light, the grasses cannot survive. In addition, as the algae dies and decomposes, it depletes the oxygen that plants and other organisms need to survive.

UNLV takes to heart children's health development
By Marites Velasquez Published: Monday, May 3, 2004 Childhood obesity has become prevalent in American culture, but UNLV and the City of Henderson have created a program to teach kids to stay active, eat healthy and prevent possible future health problems.
Hearts N' Parks has been introduced to over 400 elementary schools since first being implemented in several after-school Safekey programs. The program aims to reduce childhood obesity by combining fun activities with science-based lessons that reinforce the benefits of good nutrition and physical fitness.
Molly Michelman, visiting instructor in UNLV's Department of Nutrition Sciences, said the one-year-old programs has already produced encouraging results.
"Of all the states participating in the Hearts N' Parks program, Nevada has shown the most significant progress so far," said Michelman. "Our testing indicates that the children who participated have not only dramatically improved their ability to identify heart-healthy foods, but are also more willing to eat healthier and engage in more physical activities."
Last spring, Michelman developed an undergraduate course at UNLV specifically designed to support the Hearts N' Parks program. It taught students to develop, teach and modify lesson plans that stress the importance of good nutrition and physical fitness to children in the participating Henderson schools.

Nutrition Lesson Plans Parents and Educators
There is a growing concern for the need to educate children on how to eat and live healthy lifestyles. The Center of Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) reported on June 3, 1991 that more than 90% of children's television advertisements on a typical Saturday morning promoted food of low nutritional value. One of the most critical ages is when the child is becoming a teenager, or their pre-teen years. At this age, children become more responsible in helping out in the household. It is also a period where children begin to develop life-long habits. That is why it's important to emphasize healthy eating habits, outdoor/indoor physical activities, and limited television viewing, as well as junk foods and fast foods in moderation. Parents are the role models for children and they will follow in their footsteps. Here's a few ways to get you and/or your family on the right track. There are a lot of nutritional lesson plans already set up and ready to go for kids, it's just the matter of bringing them into action. The following are some educational resources for parents and educators to teach children healthy lifestyle habits in a fun and interesting way.

Living Healthy The Challenge of Chronic Illness
(August 2000) Nobody wants to have a chronic illness. However, the majority of us will develop one or more chronic health problems during our lives. In fact, it is estimated that people 60 and older on average have two or more chronic health conditions such as arthritis, heart disease, lung disease, stroke or diabetes. Chronic health problems typically require that a person manage their condition with the guidance and advice of their doctor. That usually means maintaining a certain diet, exercising regularly and following a strict medication program. Dealing with any chronic condition is an emotional challenge. Often the emotional and psychological effects are just as daunting as the physical ones. The losses and lifestyle changes that are associated with chronic illness can take a toll. These may include the loss of a job or friends, or giving up some dreams, goals or valued activities. Finding ways to cope with the physical and emotional challenges is key to living successfully with a chronic health problem. This process, often called "self help" or "self management," includes all the decisions a person makes and actions they take to maintain their health and independence.
