Reading Skills Lesson Plan: Using Word Parts to Infer Meaning
Student Resource: "Jump for Center," by Barbara O. Webb
Media Type: Short Story Objectives: After completing this lesson, students will be able to:
  • Discuss measures of skills-related fitness and identify physical activities and sports that make use of them.
  • Identify rules of effective communication and explain the importance of using them in social situations.
  • Apply the reading skill of using word parts to infer meaning to a story about developing sports skills.
Introducing the Lesson Challenge students to identify the greatest living shortstop in baseball and to defend their answers with hard data. Allow a moment or two for discussion, which may be quite animated. Elicit through the discussion that one measure of a great defensive shortstop is range-the ability to cover a lot of ground when fielding a ball. Reveal that range is in turn a function of several measures of skills-related fitness, in particular agility, the ability to move quickly and gracefully. Invite students who participated in the discussion to come to the front of the class to settle another dispute. Ask them to name the greatest living ballet dancer and to defend their answers with hard data. If students are unable to name and/or discuss dancers, point out that playing shortstop and ballet dancing actually have much in common. Note that these dancers, like shortstops, need to be agile. Explain, moreover, that the jobs of shortstop and ballet dancer require good balance and good reaction time (the ability to respond rapidly to an event or other stimulus).

    Elementary, Grades 4 - 6
This unit focuses on how plants are used for medicinal and curing purposes. Students will study the misconceptions of nineteenth-century Euro-American medicine, learn how Lewis and Clark and American Indians used plants to cure and heal, discover how many products we use today derive from plants, create simple herbal remedies, and participate in a culminating project that requires students to create a medicine box or bag from plants. By the end of the unit, students will know that nineteenth century Euro-American and American Indian medical practices shared an appreciation for the value of plants as a source of cures. Students will also know that other nineteenth-century medical practices have long since been debunked, while the study of plants has survived the test of time. Finally, students will know how to pack an herbal medicine bag of their own and how to apply these herbs to common ailments. The unit uses readings, images, quotes, vocabulary, hands-on activities, and student research as teaching tools. Ongoing assessments or tests include oral questions and worksheets. The culmination of the unit is the Performance Assessment Task, which requires students to apply their knowledge and skills regarding plants and curing. Students work both individually and in a group to develop their own survival kit or "medical box" for a hypothetical modern-day trek.

Safety Art (grades 1+) prepares children for International Walk to School Day. The lesson reviews the four most fantastic reasons to walk and ride and the six simple steps to staying safe. The children make picket style signs to carry and large banners to place at staging areas and in front of schools. Making these signs gets kids excited about the event and equips them with a device which makes them more visible in traffic. Download the pdf Click here for an 11x17 safety poster Stop! Look! Listen! (2nd grade) is a lesson addressing the behavior which statistically causes the greatest number of injuries for child pedestrians: failure to stop at the edge and look for traffic. The lesson uses direct instruction, NHTSA's video Safe Crossings With Willie Whistle, modeling and practice. Children will learn the importance of stopping at every edge, looking left, right, then left again (all the way over the shoulder), listening for cars and only crossing if it's clear. The Walking Obstacle Course (2nd grade) The course is a simulation of street crossing situations. Students will demonstrate the procedure of stopping at the edge, looking left then right, then left again (looking all of the way over their shoulder) before crossing, doing so only if it is clear. Four obstacles: legally parked cars, cars parked in the crosswalk, the shrub (visual obstacle) and the moving car, give students an opportunity to put into practice what they learned in Stop! Look! Listen!

Each of the three lesson plans focuses on Earth, Water or Air, the three general categories/themes of the P.O.V.'s Borders: Environment website. The plans offer ideas about how to incorporate website features about hybrid cars (streaming video), a polluted waterway (streaming audio) and the importance of biodiversity and heirloom seeds (interactive game) into your curriculum in a meaningful way. Lesson 2: The second three lesson plans in each section can be used together as a unit, or separately. All three are designed to facilitate online storytelling and the sharing of pictures. Losing weight is easy! The Bucket Diet You have indeed lost weight. Is losing WEIGHT the real issue? Or is it losing FAT? Three components make up your body: water, lean weight , and fat. Water is the main ingredient of your body. Second is lean weight: your muscles, bones, organs, and tissues. Third is fat. Unfortunately, most diets disregard whether the weight loss is water, muscle, or fat. Rapid weight loss will undoubtedly be from water that was stored in the body. Unfortunately, results are short-lived: the body detects dehydration and responds with anti-diuretic hormones. The result is subsequent water retention and bloating. Good muscle tone promotes a higher metabolism (the rate of burning energy) even at rest. This encourages fat retention. Weight loss becomes unlikely. Clearly, a low-calorie, quick weight loss diet that leaves you listless, irritable, dehydrated and bloated, and ultimately fatter is not what you want. Focus on losing fat while maintaining water and increasing muscle!
