A shortage of qualified language teachers means its proposals to make language lessons available to seven-to-11 year olds will depend on using adults who are not fully qualified teachers. The strategy, which runs up to 2010, is aimed at addressing Britain's poor reputation for linguists - at the same time as the government is dropping the compulsion to study a language to GCSE level. It intends to allow youngsters in secondary schools to drop the study of a modern foreign language at the age of 14. 'No point' "I don't think there's a great deal of point in forcing people to go through the process of learning a foreign language at 14 when they really are completely switched off as I'm afraid a number of children are," the Education Secretary, Charles Clarke, said in a BBC News interview. "The people we are talking about at 14 are people who haven't got any familiarity with foreign languages at all and really aren't gaining everything from it.

Undergraduate Studies Catalog (1999-2001) Teacher Preparation SUNY Brockport offers undergraduate teacher preparation for students seeking a career in the teaching profession. Students complete a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree in one of the academic majors, in conjunction with a teacher education program leading to certification. Each program provides opportunities for early participation, observation, or tutoring experiences, and culminates in a teaching experience in an area public school. Graduates of SUNY Brockport are, in the broad sense, liberally educated persons with in-depth knowledge in the area of their academic majors.* Those who complete one of the College's teacher preparation programs are, in addition, provided with the skills that are necessary to foster learning in an often culturally, socially and intellectually diverse group of students. Secondary Education The Department of Education offers teacher education programs for students seeking teaching careers in specific subject areas for grades five through twelve. Most of the programs are inter-departmental, with the exception of General Science Broadfield, Social Studies Broadfield, and Technology Education Broadfield, which are totally administered and housed within the Department of Education. Therefore, students who wish to complete any of the aforementioned majors will enroll in the Department of Education, whereas students who wish to complete any of the other majors will enroll in the departments offering the teaching options in their chosen areas. In addition to its secondary programs, the Department of Education provides foundation coursework which is valuable to teachers at all levels in such areas as history and philosophy of education, multicultural education, educational psychology, human development, assessment, curriculum, instructional computing, and exceptionality. Dawson, and Joe Garofalo The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM, 1989) advocates that problem solving, reasoning, communication, and connections be woven throughout K-12 mathematics instruction. However, real world connections are often missing from mathematics teaching. Technology facilitates applications of school mathematics to real world situations by providing access to worthwhile data and tools that alleviate the computational constraints often involved in the analysis of real world "messy" data. In this article we illustrate a few activities that help students develop conceptual understanding through the use of real world data and electronic simulations of real world events.
