    Etiology of Schizophrenia
The cause of schizophrenia has not yet been determined, although research points to the interaction of genetic endowment and major environmental upheaval during development of the brain. This section first discusses genetic studies and then turns to the evidence for neurodevelopmental disruption. These lines of research are beginning to converge: neurodevelopmental disruption may be the result of genetic and/or environmental stressors early in development, leading to subtle alterations in the brain. Furthermore, environmental factors later in development can either exacerbate or ameliorate expression of genetic or neurodevelopmental defects. The overarching message is that the onset and course of schizophrenia are most likely the result of an interaction between genetic and environmental influences. Figure 4-3 ). However, in about 40 percent of identical twins in which one is diagnosed with schizophrenia, the other never meets the diagnostic criteria. The discordance among identical twins clearly indicates that environmental factors likely also play a role (DSM-IV). Figure 4-3. Risk of developing schizophrenia

ADOLESCENTS HAVE RIGHT TO HEALTH-CARE SERVICES AND INFORMATION, GENERAL ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT SAYS ON WORLD POPULATION DAY
Following is the message by the President of the General Assembly
Adolescence is a uniquely vulnerable period of life.  It is a time when many young people confront sexual and reproductive health issues for the first time.  They must deal with new pressures and new risks.  And unless they are given the necessary support, they may not be able to make the informed decisions that lead to healthy lives.
Approximately 10 per cent of all births are to adolescents, with 15 million girls aged 15 to 19 giving birth each year.  These pregnancies are considered high risk because adolescent girls are twice as likely to die from pregnancy and childbirth than women in their twenties, and their children face a higher chance of child and infant mortality.  Young people should be informed of the dangers.  They should be provided the support they need to make active decisions about the timing and spacing of their children.  And they should be provided the support they need to prevent them or their children from becoming a mortality statistic.  Mongolia provides an excellent model.  All secondary schools are now required to teach a course on sexuality education, designed by education professionals with United Nations Family Population Fund support.
Services and information are also critical in stalling the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.  Every day, nearly 6,000 young people become infected with HIV.  Half of all new infections occur among young people aged 15 to 24.  We have seen, however, that comprehensive government programmes can significantly slow transmission rates.  In Thailand, for instance, a massive public information campaign produced dramatic results.  An estimated 200,000 to 400,000 fewer people were infected with HIV/AIDS than would have been in the absence of decisive government action.

    • The General Studies majors are interdisciplinary by definition and flexible by design. Each is unique to the student who chooses it. Each allows for both concentration and diversification of course work. The rules for the majors provide a framework on which to build a cohesive undergraduate program. There are three Option I majors: Science , and Social Science . Each requires credit hours of course work, and 32 of these hours must be in upper division level courses (300/400). Within the upper division course work, the student develops two concentrations of eight upper division credits in two different departments from the major area. In addition to the two eight credit hour concentrations, the student must complete 16 upper division credit hours from the major area. These credits may all be from the same department or may be chosen from different departments within the major. The remaining 20 credit hours may be upper and/or lower division.
The Option II A General Studies major may serve as an interim major allowing the student to explore the variety of course work in a general area of interest before deciding on a departmental major. Often, after choosing the General Studies major, students discover their interest is piqued by a specific department and, after taking several classes in a specific department, they follow that interest to a departmental major.
