Clinical Faculty Health Law Clinic The Quinnipiac University School of Law's Health Law Clinic, founded in 1995, provides Quinnipiac students with the opportunity to make a real and significant difference in the lives of persons at risk for losing fundamental legal rights and/or access to health-related benefits. The clinic grew out of the Law School's collaboration with Connecticut Legal Services and the Connecticut Legal Rights Project. It provides legal assistance to individuals with a broad range of legal problems. For example, clinic students have represented HIV-positive clients seeking to establish guardianship arrangements for their children, clients with disabilities seeking state and federal benefits, and incarcerated clients seeking appropriate medical treatment. Consequently, clinic student-attorneys appear on behalf of clients in many judicial and administrative forums, including state trial, federal and appellate courts as well as state and federal administrative agencies. Clinic students also perform a broad array of lawyering tasks, including interviewing and counseling clients, gathering and analyzing forensic medical evidence, researching complex statutes and regulations, preparing legal memoranda and briefs, and arguing on behalf of clients before judges and other adjudicators. As they interview, investigate, research, analyze, draft, advise, and advocate on behalf of their clients, Health Law Clinic students develop the lawyering skills they will need to be successful in any practice setting.

@import "css/medhumanities.css"; In 1972 the University of Connecticut School of Medicine established a Division of Humanistic Studies in Medicine in the Department of Community Medicine and Health Care ; it was one of the first medical schools in the nation to do so. Originally, the division was to focus primarily upon the growing discipline of biomedical ethics , but to include also the humanities health law became, under the late Jay Healey and his associates, a requirement for first-year medical and dental students and one of the most popular courses in the curriculum. Over the years, the Graduate Program in Public health, also located in the Department of Community Medicine, has drawn on the faculty of the Division and developed a required course in Public Health Law and offering others in the history of public health and ethical issues. Over the last 30 years, biomedical ethics, humanities, and law occupy an essential place in the medical, dental and public health curricula at the University of Connecticut. As the organization of heath care becomes more complex, and as business and commercial interests intrude on all aspects of medical practice, ethics, morality, jurisprudence, and legal issues have taken on more importance. In 1998 after an extensive strategic planning process, the division changed its name to the Division of Medical Humanities, Health Law and Ethics reflecting its roots in the humanities, medical jurisprudence in health care, and ethical issues, however its focus remained the same: educating tomorrow's health professionals to become compassionate, empathetic practitioners, investigating ethical and legal problems in clinical practice and biomedical research, scholarship, and service to the community.

Health Law
In its broadest definition, Health Law is defined as the law relating to health care and health of human beings. It is the area of medicine and public health concerned with the laws governing interactions between doctors and patients and the organization of health care. The Division's two full time faculty members are health attorneys and provide training experiences to public health and law students at the University of Connecticut , teach, and conduct health law research on a variety of topics.
Health Law Clinic (LAW 165)
Conducted bi-annually each spring by Jane Comerford, J.D., M.P.H., Assistant Attorney General and in-house counsel for the UConn Health Center and its entities (e.g. John Dempsey Hospital, Medical School, and Dental School) and other members of the Division, the Health Law Clinic provides students with an interest in health law at the University of Connecticut School of Law with practical experience and guidance. This clinic has the primary goal of providing students with the opportunity to research and discuss advanced issues in health law. Students are encouraged to act as members of the law department at an academic health center. Legal issues covered in this clinic will arise out of past, present, or anticipated controversies involving the components of a contemporary academic health center: a medical school, a dental school, and a university hospital. Clinic meetings are held at the University of Connecticut Health Center. Health Care Law: Regulation and Financing (LAW 710) is a prerequisite. Enrollment is limited. 3 credits.

The guiding principle of the Health Law Institute is to blend the theoretical with the practical. The Institute achieves its prominence through an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to health law education.
Chicago is the ideal home for an Institute of this kind because many prominent health care organizations are based here, including the American Medical Association, the American Hospital Association, and the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, as well as national law firms, leading academic medical centers, and government offices. The Health Law Institute's connection to the legal community, to the health care community, and to the urban community provides students with a wealth of opportunities for applying their legal education to real-world challenges. CERTIFICATE IN HEALTH LAW The Certificate in Health Law provides law students, lawyers, and health care professionals with formal training in health law through an interdisciplinary exposure to law, administration, medicine, and ethics that is vital to professionals in this complex and sophisticated field. Concentration in this area of law can provide J.D. candidates with a competitive edge in seeking summer and full-time employment in the health law field.
