Minority Health Today
July, 2000 by Juzar Ali EG Helm
A Louisiana State University program, titled "Tuberculosis Education Aimed at Community Health" (TEACH), achieves its dual objectives of educating medical students and providing community outreach Introduction Despite the availability of effective anti-tuberculosis treatment, cure rates for tuberculosis (TB) remain unacceptable, and adherence to treatment is a challenging problem throughout the world. After several decades of decline, the incidence of TB in the United States increased 20% between 1985 and 1992, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Ga. Among the reasons for the increase are the epidemic of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV); immigration from countries where TB is more prevalent; transmission of TB in high-risk environments, such as correctional facilities, homeless shelters, hospitals, and nursing homes; and deterioration of the public health care infrastructure. After the surge from 1985 to 1992, the incidence resumed its decline. The 21 337 TB cases reported in the United States in 1996 represent the fourth consecutive year of decline. Even so, there are areas in which TB continues to flourish, especially among foreign-born persons. In 1997, nearly 40% of TB cases were in foreign-born persons. Additionally, outbreaks of drug-resistant TB continue in many areas. An estimated 10 to 15 million persons in the United States are infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Without intervention, about 10% will develop TB at some point.

Campaign To Teach Drug Savvy
WASHINGTON, Oct. 7, 2003

"These are real medicines that must be taken responsibly."
Surgeon General Richard Carmona
(AP) Pharmacist Stephen Setter regularly asks families of Alzheimer's sufferers what drug they use to help the often agitated patients sleep better. Tylenol PM, many respond — not knowing, Setter says, that it contains an ingredient that can further confuse someone with dementia.
He also talks of a man who needed transfusions after the painkiller ibuprofen caused stomach bleeding. The man didn't know acetaminophen would have been a better choice for an elderly person who'd already had one stomach ulcer, until Setter was called in for advice.
Over-the-counter medicines often are powerful drugs that patients don't know how to use correctly — picking the wrong one for their health problems, overdosing, or inadvertently mixing them with prescription drugs in ways that can harm. Now a new education campaign by the surgeon general and a mix of pharmacy and consumer groups aims to help patients become more savvy about self-treatment.

America's Uninsured: Health Insurance is a Family Matter

Nearly one in five families has at least one uninsured family member and more than 80 percent of uninsured children and adults under age 65 live in working families. The three most common results of being uninsured is that the family will suffer financially, families are less likely to get timely health services, and the health and long term development for children can be compromised. This report from the Institute of Medicine outlines the causes and results of not having health insurance, especially for children. The summary is available in Spanish.

    Progressive Universities Teach Safety Course
The future looks bright for improved health and safety in Nova ScotiaÕs workplaces with two innovative courses at Saint Mary's University and the Technical University of Nova Scotia. Each university will offer a course in occupational health and safety as part of their business and engineering degree programs. "Partnerships like this are the best way to improve health and safety and reduce accidents," said Labour Minister Manning MacDonald. "Early awareness and education will mean safer workplaces for the future. The end result is good for workers, families, business and the economy of Nova Scotia." Project Minerva is an educational initiative designed to help business and engineering schools produce graduates with a practical understanding of the day-to-day health and safety issues affecting workplaces. Health and safety should be an integral part of the daily administration of businesses. The province's new Occupational Health and Safety Act and a new Workers' Compensation Act clearly link health and safety with the costs of doing business.

team up to teach women's health
WACOWhen Donna Stauber began her career as a community health educator, she didn't realize it would take her to communities in other countries.
But recently, Stauber and a team of 10 people spent their vacations in a village near Chihuahua, Mexico, teaching and ministering to the Tarahumara Indians.
Stauber is an employee of Hillcrest Health System in Waco, an institution affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
With the help of Joan Barrett, a language professor and translator from Baylor University, Stauber and others taught a group of eight Indian women about working in a hospital and caring for the ill. Skills such as taking vital signs, lifting and moving patients, giving injections and making hospital beds were taught so the women could work in the small clinic in their village and care for ill family members at home.
"We had a wonderful group of women who were eager to learn," Stauber said. "One woman came 90 miles to the seminars."
Along with learning patient-care skills, participants learned about women's health issues such as the risks of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and improper diet.

What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy
The book is primarily a criticism of 'traditional' school-based learning methodologies, using observations of children playing video games and the author's own play sessions as representative examples of the 36 principles of good learning he describes.
He uses primarily 3d shooters and RPGs as his examples of 'good' video games (meaning that they encourage learning things about and within the world of the game).
The author defines and conceptualizes his principles of learning and contrasts it with the school-based education process, noting the vast differences between the two.
On this topic of criticism of school-based education, the author makes a strong argument.

How can community based learning teach medical students better to strengthen the publichealth function Walters, Research Fellow Institute of general Practice
    http://www.nhsetrent.gov.uk/ph/ph_conference2000/how_can_community_based_learnin
How can community based learning teach medical students a public health perspective?
Abstract: Background A key principle of the modernising agenda of the NHS has been for primary and community care agencies to incorporate a public health perspective. Similarly, medical education reforms have emphasised that community based learning opportunities should make a key contribution to the public health curriculum. Examples from different medical curricula can illustrate ways to achieve this, but innovations have tended to be led from academic centres. There is little literature that examines primary care staff and other key stakeholder views of their own contribution to this agenda. Method A series of iterative data collections through interviews, questionnaires and focus groups consulted NHS managers, clinical staff, students and users on what could be taught effectively in community settings, and how to achieve this in practice. Conclusions NHS staff and stakeholders prioritise learning paradigms in community based medical education which parallel enhanced public health perspectives in training and practice. Further work in progress will implement changes in the curriculum and teaching structure. The implications of these findings for the development of a public health perspective amongst doctors will be discussed and consideration given to ways in which the NHS and educational institutions can liase better to strengthen the public health function. Authors: Ms Kate Billingham, Senior Research Fellow

Start early Two years old is not too early to start teaching your child about safety. A three-year-old can learn how to talk on a telephone and how to make an emergency call (post the number on the wall, and make sure he or she can reach the telephone at all times). Between 3 and 4 years old, a child can learn a home number and address. To help reinforce the child's memory, paste your home phone number on the wall and on the telephone, and practice calling the number from other places. A really great way to reinforce lessons you've taught is to have your child teach you. Pretend to be a younger sibling, or a young friend or play Barbies or dolls and have your child teach you or the dolls how to handle different situations. This forces the child to think and to apply the lessons. Give your child self-confidence Safer Child has provided you with an ever-evolving list of Teaching Links to helpful organizations that work to teach you how to teach and protect your child. Safer Child isn't suggesting you hound your children to a point at which they're afraid of their own shadow. But you can gradually introduce them to the notion that there is the potential for danger. Then, because it wouldn't be fair to tell them that and not give them the self-confidence or skills to cope with it, make sure they know that you (and other caregivers) will protect them, and that, over time, they also can learn how to protect themselves.
