Who will teach tomorrow's doctors?
Report based upon the proceedings of the British Medical Association (BMA) Symposium 12.06.2000.
Dr Julian L. Burton Introduction
Pathology at Sheffield has a widely recognised and long term commitment to delivering a high standard of undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. Further, the department has been instrumental in the design and implementation of the modern medical undergraduate curriculum at the University of Sheffield. Staff members continue to have an active role in the development of the revised curriculum. With this in mind, the following report is offered to keep staff and students in the department aware of the debate surrounding 'Who will teach tomorrow's doctors', which has been recently highlighted by a British Medical Association (BMA) symposium.
The symposium was introduced by the Chairman of the BMA Medical Academic Staff Committee (MASC), Dr Colin Smith (Southampton), who highlighted the need for such a debate. Professor Graeme Catto, Chairman of the General Medical Council (GMC) Education Committee then highlighted the current and future work of the GMC's Education Committee, with reference to medical education in a time of changing patient expectations. Dr Seamus Phillips, a pre-registration house officer (Southampton) offered a student perspective on teaching and education. Dr Elizabeth Murray, Senior Lecturer in Primary Care (University College London) discussed the role of General Practice based teaching in undergraduate medical education. Finally, Mr Clive Wilkinson, Chairman of NHS Executive, West Midlands, commented on the future of medical education and the lay persons view of the NHS/university interface.

Cookery clubs and tuck shops enrolled in battle against obesity
James Meikle, health correspondent
Monday January 5, 2004
The Guardian

Trials to tempt children to eat healthier foods from school tuck shops, vending machines and lunch boxes are being organised by the government in the latest initiative to shrink youngsters' burgeoning waistlines. A 500-school programme of experiments designed to tackle child obesity was announced last night by the public health minister, Melanie Johnson. It includes cookery clubs, attempts to improve the quality of the increasingly popular school breakfasts, and moves to encourage pupils to understand where food comes from.

    http://www.niddk.nih.gov/health/nutrit/pubs/wtloss/wtloss.htm

    Who should lose weight? Health experts generally agree that adults can benefit from weight loss if they are moderately to severely overweight (see the following weight-for-height chart below). Health experts also agree that adults who are overweight and have weight-related medical problems or a family history of such problems can benefit from weight loss. Some weight-related health problems include diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, or high blood sugar levels. Even a small weight loss of 10 to 20 pounds can improve your health, for example by lowering your blood pressure and cholesterol levels. You do not need to lose weight if your weight is within the healthy range on the weight-for-height chart, you have gained less than 10 pounds since you reached your adult height, and you are otherwise healthy. Find your weight on the bottom of the graph. Go straight up from that point until you come to the line that matches your height. Then look to find your weight group.

    INTENT. Families are the primary teachers and caregivers for their children. The present and future health, safety, and well-being of students are also the concern of state/district/school . Schools have a duty to help prevent unnecessary injury, disease, and chronic health conditions that can lead to disability or early death. For students to learn to take responsibility for their own health and to adopt health-enhancing attitudes and behaviors:
    • every school shall be a safe and healthy place for children and employees to learn and work, with a climate that nurtures learning, achievement, and growth of character;
    • all students shall be taught the essential knowledge and skills they need to become "health literate" - that is, to make health-enhancing choices and avoid behaviors that can damage their health and well-being;
    • each school shall be organized to reinforce students' adoption of health-enhancing behaviors, and school staff shall be encouraged to model healthy lifestyles; and
    • school leaders shall ensure that the nutrition, health services, and social services children need in order to learn are provided either at the school site or in cooperation with other community agencies.

    History of Project TEACH
    Project TEACH stands for Treatment Education Activists Combatting HIV. TEACH was initiated in Philadelphia in 1995 by Julie Davids and Jeff Maskovsky, two members of ACT UP Philadelphia, working in collaboration with two local organizations, Philadelphia FIGHT and We the People Living with HIV/AIDS, Inc. Philadelphia FIGHT brought together people living with HIV and other AIDS activists, clinicians, and researchers to sustain a community research initiative and bring cutting-edge treatment and research information to the impacted communities of Philadelphia. Today it is the largest provider of HIV/AIDS medical care in the region. We the People, a groundbreaking PWA coalition primarily led by people of color, was a central force for effective community mobilization in struggles for housing, benefits and inclusion of people with HIV in decision-making processes. As treatment activists and organizations rooted in the day-to-day experiences of people with HIV in Philadelphia, the initiators of Project TEACH designed the program to move towards the stated goals of people most impacted by HIV in the mid-1990s current and former drug users, people of color, and women. They felt that crucial medical and HIV-specific information was not reaching their communities, and that they did not have meaningful participation in debates and decisions that impacted their communities. They felt that people were dying because they did not have information that would have saved or prolonged their lives.

    Can patients teach students? It's time to change the role of patients What can patients teach medical students? Nothing - after all, you are learning medicine, acquiring knowledge and skills that only doctors and scientists are competent to teach. Obviously you have to learn about patients, but to be taught by them elevates them to an inappropriate status. If you reject this hypothesis you are presumably prepared to consider that patients can teach you something, but what? Patients are obviously essential to the process of learning to be a doctor, but their role in medical education is usually passive. They have the status of a learning resource, providing you with opportunities to practise newly acquired skills. However, there is a distinction to be made between "learning from" patients and being "taught by" patients. The shift from passive to active involvement in your education brings potential benefits. How was it for you?
