September 11th 2003 is a day filled with memorials and reflections around the country. As the nation reviews our response for the past year, we will soon turn our attention to the future: *Should we take action against Iraq and other terrorist havens? *Should the US act unilaterally, or should President Bush consult with Congress and the UN? *Have we sacrificed civil liberties too much, or should security take precedence? *What should be done for a long-term memorial, at the World Trade Center site and elsewhere? In the weeks to come, Speakout.com will explore those questions in articles, surveys, and petitions. Headlines

The research programme in ESHER has four distinct themes: valuing benefits/quantifying preferences in health, safety and environment;
development and application of economic evaluation

priority setting in health care;

econometric applications in studies of health, safety and the environment.

Valuing benefits/quantifying preferences in health, safety and environment The group is undertaking several projects in the area of valuing benefits/quantifying preferences in health, safety and environment. This involves work for both the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions, on the valuation of reductions in air pollution, and the Department of Health, on the valuation of gains in health arising from new and existing health care technologies.

Human health Human health is intimately connected to the surrounding environment – every day most of us breathe in air pollution, digest artificial chemicals with our food, and experience stressful noise levels, to name just three examples. It is usually very difficult to identify cause-and-effect relationships between, say, noise pollution and heart disease. Identifying these relationships, however, is often worth the effort – linking environmental pollution to human health helps to redefine priorities and unlock resources. This section outlines those areas where human health is either known to be linked to the environment, or where there is enough evidence to justify preventive action. webmaster@eea.eu.int European Environment Agency, Kongens Nytorv 6, DK-1050 Copenhagen K, Denmark - Phone: +45 3336 7100 and

Sustainable Animal Production - Visions for the 21th century Welcome to our Website
Sustainable animal production is a system which preserves the basis of life of future generations. The foundations, conditions and perspectives for animal production are exceedingly variable in different parts of the world. This project focusses on the future supply and quality of food for humans and animals, animal welfare and health, the effects of animal production on the environment, the influences of new technologies, future animal production sites and global trade. These pages contain the Conference Sustainable Animal Production , the documentation of a multidisciplinary project to develop a global vision for the future of the production of food of animal origin. This site is also intended as a forum to continue the dialogue begun in the virtual conference and workshop series "Sustainable Animal Production". The project was realized by a consortium of scientists from four research institutions in northern Germany and includes a virtual conference launched in October, 1999, and followed by a series of

Tips for Searching
  • Look for words with the same prefix. For example, in your query form type key* to find key keying keyhole keyboard , and so on. Search for all forms of a word. For example, in the form type sink** to find sink sinking sank , and sunk Search with the keyword NEAR, rather than AND , for words close to each other. For example, both of these queries, system and manager and system near manager , look for the words system and manager on the same page. But with NEAR , the returned pages are ranked in order of proximity: The closer together the words are, the higher the rank of that page. Refine your queries with the AND NOT keywords to exclude certain text from your search. For example, if you want to find all instances of surfing but not the Net , write the following query: surfing AND NOT the Net Add the OR keyword to find all instances of either one word or another, for example: Abbott OR Costello This query finds all pages that mention Abbott or Costello or both.

As oil prices rise, amid uncertainties in the Middle East, it was encouraging to note the wide support for renewable forms of energy (including small hydro, wind, solar and biomass) shown at the Renewables 2004 meeting in Bonn last week (See: Global support for renewable energy
Blyth Offshore - the UK's first offshore wind farm

For some, including China and Germany, it was a chance to announce new renewable energy targets. But, so far, the European Commission has hesitated to look beyond the existing target for 2010, which calls for renewables to provide 12 per cent of energy consumption in the 15 EU countries and 21 per cent of electricity use across the enlarged EU of 25 countries.
Indeed, the Commission appears doubtful that even these can be achieved.

Brick kilns on health Environment
Brick making is one of the traditional crafts in the Kathmandu Valley. Evidence indicates that brick making was in practice as early as the Lichchhavi Period. Today, with rapid urbanization brick making has become more widespread and profitable, as brick is the main building material in Kathmandu. However, the growth of Kathmandu’s brick industry has brought with it significant environmental and health problems because the industry is using poor quality fuel and very inefficient technology.
According to a study conducted by Environment and Public Health Organization (ENPHO) in 2001, there are around 125 brick kilns in Kathmandu valley alone. Of these, over 90 per cent are of Bull’s Trench type kilns, which supply 87 per cent of the total brick demand of the Kathmandu Valley. As the Bull’s, Trench Kiln runs seasonally and many of the kilns are operating illegally, the actual numbers of kilns under operation vary by year.
The Bulls Trench Kiln is an old and inefficient technology, which has been banned in India, the place of its origin. The main problem associated with this technology is the excessive air pollution it causes. A World Bank study conducted over five years ago estimates that the brick kilns in Kathmandu Valley are responsible for about 31 per cent of the total suspended particulate matter (dust) in Kathmandu’s air. As most of these kilns are operating in the southern and south-eastern belt of the Kathmandu Valley, the prevailing south-west wind blows the pollutants to urban areas.

Purity Test for Essential Oils
Essential oils, used for everything from insect repellents to aromatherapy and fragrance, are very strong and need to be used with care, but they can cause environmental health problems if the brand doesn't provide pure oils. Some oils have petroleum-based solvents added, which can be very toxic. Petroleum-based solvents are often long-lasting in the environment, are stored in our fat, and are a source of volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) that negatively affect indoor air quality. more
