Injury prevention
The Injury Prevention Programme is based on two activities, first the collection of data on injuries and accidents in the Member States, and secondly on epidemiological projects which are based on the collection of the above data and/or collect additional information.
Injury Prevention Programme
- The Injury Prevention Programme of the European Commission follows the European Home and Leisure Surveillance System (EHLASS). EHLASS was designed (more than ten years ago) by the European Commission to support Member States to collect data about Home and Leisure Accidents for themselves – consequence were different collection methods, different classifications and databases. - The Injury Prevention Programme (IPP) was created in 1999 (for 5 years, budget 14 Mio EURO) to increase the European added value. It ended with the adoption of the New Public Health Programme in 2002. However, the last projects under the IPP will be accomplished 2003/2004. One of the main goals was to create a common database (ISS – Injury Surveillance System within EUPHIN – European Public Health Information Network) with quality data collected using a common classification and comparable methods. Apart from the data collection projects, epidemiological projects were funded (e.g. ‘Social influences on injuries, sports injuries’, ‘costs of injuries in Europe’). The injury prevention network and a co-ordinating secretariat was funded and a permanent qualitative evaluation was performed.

Muskoka-Parry Sound Health Unit Smoking and Tobacco Have you ever thought about what is in a puff of cigarette smoke, or what it does to your mind and body? If you are a smoker, or are thinking about starting, you should consider the following facts. It takes just seven seconds for inhaled cigarette smoke to travel into the lungs and bloodstream and then directly to the brain. Once there, nicotine from the smoke triggers many responses in the body. It affects mood, alertness, concentration and performance. Inhaling just one cigarette speeds up the heartbeat, increases blood pressure, upsets the flow of blood and air in the lungs and causes a drop in the temperature of fingers and toes. Smokers become addicted to nicotine and crave the "buzz" effect they get from it. Smokers also develop a tolerance to nicotine, which means they need more of it to get the same effect. Eventually, they reach the number of cigarettes they need to smoke to keep them satisfied. This is how smokers get hooked. It becomes a vicious cycle. They need more cigarettes to give them that good feeling. They think smoking helps relieve stress when really it is the desire for cigarettes that creates most of the stress. Smoking is also stressful on the body. In fact, it is such a strain that every cigarette smoked shortens a person's life by five minutes!

Almost every home contains hazardous products, or products that can harm human health or the environment if improperly handled. They are products used in cleaning, home improvements, automobile maintenance, lawn and garden care, hobbies, and a variety of other tasks. Each year, thousands of people are injured by exposure or accident involving hazardous household products. Because of the dangers they pose, these products require special awareness, handling, and disposal. In order to protect health and environment, every consumer should know how to properly use, store, and dispose of hazardous household products. An extensive list of educational resources that can be downloaded from this site is provided below. The Household Hazardous Waste Project (HHWP) promotes promotes the safe use, storage and disposal of hazardous materials by educating consumers to

      B. Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation B.1. Radiation Burns and Cancer Therapy Some of the harmful effects of ionizing radiation were apparent from the outset. Too much x-radiation caused recurrent reddening of the skin or loss of hair, hours or days later, often followed by painful radiation burns. By 1897, 69 cases of skin damage were reported. By 1902, hundreds of cases of x-ray injuries were documented. Surgery was often needed to repair the damage. In 1896, in Chicago, after painfully injuring his hand with x-rays, W. Grubbe [ ] decided to focus those same rays on a cancerous tumor, using lead to shield himself from unwanted exposure. His was the first recorded therapeutic use of such rays to shrink tumours. That same year, scientists in several other countries began using x-rays to treat cancer and to relieve arthritic pain. Gamma rays were found to be equally potent. In 1898, Becquerel carried a sealed tube of radium in his vest pocket. As a result, he got a nasty burn on his chest which ulcerated and left a scar. At about the same time, Marie Curie's hands suffered painful radiation burns after she handled a thin metal box containing a small tube of radium.

The most challenging environmental issues of today are those associated with the production and use of energy. Acid rain has damaged our lakes and forests, the greenhouse effect jeopardizes our climate and coastal cities, oil spills have fouled our oceans and shorelines, and radioactive contamination, on a large enough scale, has the potential to threaten the molecular basis of life. This report is intended to provide a general overview of the health and environmental issues posed by nuclear power. It is hoped that it will serve as a useful resource document for all parties in the ongoing energy debate by laying out the main concerns related to nuclear power in a balanced, technically sound and informative way. . . . back to Table of Contents Section A Section B Section C
