Population, health and human well-being
Pollution takes a toll on human health, and there is increasing evidence of interation among large-scale environmental, development, and demographic changes with human disease. The Precautionary Principle . We must act on facts, and on the most accurate interpretation of them, using the best scientific information. . . . Where the state of the health of the people is at stake, the risks can be so high and the costs of corrective action so great, that prevention is better than cure. . . . Where there are significant risks of damage to the public health, we should be prepared to take action to diminish those risks even when the scientific knowledge is not conclusive, if the balance of likely costs and benefits justifies it.

CHEJ was formed to meet the urgent need for support and technical assistance by people struggling for environmental justice across the country. Because CHEJ is uniquely different from traditional environmental efforts, our philosophy is to teach and empower by helping grassroots groups and individuals (including interns) build upon their strengths. Through our organizing, leadership development, research and technical assistance, we empower individuals with skills and information to make sound judgements and become part of the political decision making process to protect health and our natural resources.
