Effective Use of Web Resources on Health and Wellness
My personal advice for users of health-information web sites is to view everything with a critical eye, evaluating the information according to how well it presents a clear and balanced view of health issues. You should keep in mind that some health-based web sites are sponsored by medical or pharmaceutical companies. Be sure to examine the fine print to see whether information being presented as "fact" may in reality be based on limited data and intended primarily to promote a product. Further details on using the Web to obtain reliable health information is provided by the Swiss nonprofit organization Health on the Net Foundation Please note that further information of a medical or pharmaceutical nature may be found in my separate collection of links under that topic.

Social Summit Fails to Treat Global Health Crisis
IPS, 20 March 1995. The World Summit on Social Development called for universal primary health care by 2000, but it failed to diagnose the root causes of the global health crisis. NGOs say it is due to ill-advised policies for developing countries and structural adjustment programmes that forced governments to cut back on health budgets to meet macroeconomic targets.

Health Many Bank financed health projects emphasize the prevention, control, and treatment of specific conditions such as malaria, diarrhea, measles, and HIV/AIDS through strengthened primary- and district-level health services. For example, the Bank worked with the government of India and other donors to finance a 1993 leprosy project that improved outreach to poor communities and promoted more effective treatment and service packages. The number of registered leprosy cases has since dropped from 1.7 million in 1992 to 0.5 million in 1996. More recently, the World Bank has become increasingly active in health sector reform projects undertaken in partnership with governments. While issues vary from country to country, the guiding principles of this work are to ensure equity, access, quality, consumer satisfaction, and efficiency in the financing and provision of health services, while controlling the growth in expenditures for health in line with economic growth. from General Health Care Issues Health Reform Online

I have included a table below with the nutrient content in 1 cup (130 gms) of raw jicama. One cup of sliced raw jicama has about 40% Daily Value vitamin C and 16% of your DV for folacin . Otherwise, it is negligible in other vitamins and minerals. FYI, it is low in calories and mostly carbohydrates

    About .....General Diet and Nutrition
GENERAL DIET AND NUTRITION I keep hearing that a low-fat diet is supposed to be good for me. Why should I eat a low-fat diet, and how low is "low"? There is strong evidence that the high levels of fat consumed by most Americans ( and members of other westernized cultures ) cause, or are a contributing factor in, diseases such as gallbladder disease, cancer, and diabetes. High levels of saturated fats, which are found in animal fats, high-fat dairy foods, tropical oils, and hydrogenated ( solidified ) vegetable oils, raise your cholesterol level and promote heart disease and strokes. The "typical" American diet gets more than 40% of its calories from fat, with the remaining calories coming from protein and carbohydrates. The American Heart Association, the National Academy of Science, the American Cancer Society, and many other groups and nutrition boards across the country recommend a diet in which a maximum of 30% of calories come from fat ( no more than 10% of total calories from saturated fats ), 55-65% calories come from carbohydrates, and 10-15% of calories are provided by proteins.

    Overview of Nutrition
Nutrition is the process of consuming, absorbing, and using nutrients needed by the body for growth, development, and the maintenance of life; nutrients are chemical substances in foods that nourish the body. If essential nutrients are not supplied in the quantities required, nutritional deficiency disorders may result. To determine whether a person is getting enough nutrients, a doctor asks about eating habits and diet, performs a physical examination to assess the composition (the amount of fat and muscle) and functioning of the body, and orders laboratory tests to measure the nutrient content of blood and tissues. Macronutrients The organic macronutrients are carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, which supply 90 percent of the dry weight of the diet and 100 percent of its energy. They are digested in the intestine and broken down into their basic units: sugars from carbohydrates, fatty acids and glycerol from fats, and amino acids from proteins. The energy content is 4 calories in a gram of protein or carbohydrate and 9 calories in a gram of fat (1 gram equals 1/28 of an ounce). As sources of energy, carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are interchangeable in proportion to their energy content.
