Four National Institutes of Health institutes support research on the health effects of UV and near-UV radiation. Their principal objectives include an increased understanding of the effects of UV and near-UV radiation exposure on target organs ( e.g. , eyes, skin, immune system) and of the molecular changes that lead to these effects, and the development of strategies to prevent the initiation or promotion of disease before it is clinically defined. In addition, NIEHS supports research on the health effects of CFC replacement chemicals, including studies on the metabolism and toxicity of HCFCs and halogenated hydrocarbons.

North Carolina's Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB) Program works to help determine the human health effects of exposure to the microscopic aquatic organism Pfiesteria piscicida and other algal blooms which have been blamed for fish kills in North Carolina and other coastal states. In North Carolina, the HAB Program's work is part of a coordinated, cooperative, interdisciplinary effort that involves other state agencies and universities, state agencies in several eastern coastal states, and the federal government. All are working together to study possible human health effects of exposure to Pfiesteria and other kinds of algae, to keep the public and policymakers informed, and to make recommendations for protecting public health. The HAB Program is an Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology program in the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services providing information and education for the public and health professionals about possible health risks from blooms of algae and around fish kills. There are three basic components of the HAB Program: For more about harmful algal blooms and protecting your health around algae and fish kills:
