WORK-SITE ACCOMMODATION IDEAS FOR INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE MIGRAINE HEADACHES

By Mayda LaRosse, M.A. Preface Introduction The Job Accommodation Network (JAN) is an information network and consulting resource to enable qualified workers with disabilities to be hired or retained. Businesses, rehabilitation professionals, and persons with disabilities can discuss their concerns and information needs with JAN's Human Factors Consultants and receive suggestions on solutions to accommodation problems. JAN offers comprehensive information on methods to accommodation problems. Included will be names, addresses and telephone numbers of appropriate resources. You can make personal contact for additional insights. Information can be by telephone, mail or e-mail, and is available at no cost to the caller. With the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), an increasing need to be knowledgeable about reasonable accommodations for people with sleep disorder has developed. Knowledge about reasonable accommodations can assist employers in hiring and retaining individuals.

    Headache
Definition: A headache is pain or discomfort in the head, scalp, or neck. Most headaches are due to tension, migraine, or a combination of the two. Serious underlying causes of headaches, like a tumor or a stroke, are extremely rare, despite the fact that many people worry about these possibilities. Most people with headaches can feel much, much better by making lifestyle changes, including learning ways to relax, and occasionally by taking medications. See also tension headache cluster headache classic migraine headache , and common migraine headache
    Alternative Names: Pain - head
Common Causes: Tension headaches are due to contraction (tightness) of the muscles in your shoulders, neck, scalp, and jaw. They are often related to stress, depression, or anxiety. Overworking, not getting enough sleep, missing meals, and using alcohol or street drugs can make you more susceptible to headaches. Foods that can trigger a headache include chocolate, cheese, and monosodium glutamate (MSG), a flavor enhancer. People who drink caffeine can have headaches when they don't get their usual daily amount. Other common reasons you may develop a tension headache include:
    • Performing an activity that causes you to hold your head in one position for a long time, like using a computer, microscope, or typewriter

      MIGRAINE HEADACHES
      General
Migraine headaches plague millions of people in the United States. Stewart and his colleagues (1) report that 18% of the women and 6% of the men in this country experience migraines every year. Furthermore, 4.5 million individuals have one or more disabling attacks a month. The large majority of migraine sufferers are in their prime productive years, and the social, as well as the treatment costs, are enormous. It is estimated that the average migraine sufferer in the USA loses 13 days of work and 8 days of leisure time a year due to migraine attacks (2).
      Symptoms:
    • Migraine sufferers typically complain of a throbbing pain on one side of the head, with nausea as well as a blurring of vision, sensitivity to light and sound often accompany migraines. About one in five migraine sufferers experience an aura (typically a disturbance in vision that may consist of brightly coloured or blinking lights) before the head pain begins.
    • Cluster headache sufferers have very severe pain often around or behind one eye. Attacks occur in clusters or groups for days or weeks at a time, and then can disappear for an extended period.

    Clinical Research Uncovers Missing Links
in Resolving Migraine Headaches and Chronic Pain

by Gerald H. Smith, D.D.S. ~ Langhorne, PA ~ USA
An integrated chiropractic/dental approach has uncovered a major link in curing chronic pain. By merging craniosacral concepts of chiropractic with functional dental orthopedics, a more comprehensive system emerges which has the ability to orchestrate structural balance of the entire human frame. By applying the integrated system, chiropractors and dentists can now focus their treatments on correcting the underlying structural imbalances which are a major source for pain.
, upper jaw, are one major direct cause for dural tensions and thus chronic pain which does not respond to conventional drug therapy.
    Figure 1. Cranial Dura
Dental malocclusions are more prevalent than ever before owing their high incidence to the high consumption of a refined food diet (changes verified by Dr. Weston Price in his classic book, Nutrition and Physical Degeneration), cranial distortions from the birthing process, and iatrogenic dental procedures (improperly aligned denture teeth, crown and bridgework, removable partial dentures, and dental orthopedics and orthodontics). To help overcome this structural disharmony, dentistry now has several diagnostic techniques to guide the practitioner during treatment: Accu-Liner instrument, Dental Orthogonal radiographic Analysis and Four Cranial indicators.
The Accu-Liner instrument is an ingenious device invented by a Seattle Washington dentist, Dr. James E. Carlson. This instrument positions the maxillae 3-dimensionally to enable proper analysis and correction. By utilizing the hammular notches and incisive papilla, the dental study cast is easily mounted within the functional range of Camper's Plane (hammular notch-incisive papilla- HIP). This horizontal plane parallels the occlusal plane and other major planes of the body. Rich

    Migraine Headaches
    Topic Overview
Migraine headaches are one of the most common types of headaches. Migraine headaches are severe, usually one-sided, throbbing headaches that often occur with nausea, vomiting, and increased sensitivity to light or sound.
    • Migraines most often begin during the teen years but may also develop during childhood. They rarely begin after age 40. They are most common in women ages 15 to 44, but they can affect anyone at any age. A person may have more migraines at certain times of life than others. In general, migraines become less severe and less frequent with age. A person who has frequent, daily, or almost daily headaches is said to have chronic daily headaches. A person may have symptoms of migraine headaches, tension-type headaches , or both types of headaches.

    Migraines
I have been taking 25 mg Amitriptyline and 120 mg Verapamil daily for migraine management for about 2 months now. Do either of these medications stimulate weight gain?
Amitriptyline (trade name Elavil or Endep) is an antidepressant. It increases your appetite for carbohydrates and may increase your need for riboflavin above your RDA, which is 1.3 mg for adult females and 1.7 mg for adult males. You should avoid alcohol and limit caffeine. Some other effects are possibly nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, altered taste, loss of appetite, increased or decreased weight, increased or decreased blood glucose. I know many of these are contradictory, but are provided as significant. Verapamil (trade name Calan or Isoptin) regulates irregular heartbeats (arrhythmia). It does not have any effect on your food intake nor should it effect your weight unless you already have problems with fluid retention because of your heart's ability as a pump. You should avoid alcohol as well with this medication. Constipation may be a problem associated with taking this prescription. Since this is a calcium channel blocker, calcium supplements may decrease the effect of this drug. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist.
My husband experienced a bout with bad headaches last July. After months, they finally went away. He constantly "diets", eats a lot of Snack Well products, drinks 0% fat milk and fruit and 1 or 2 diet cokes per day. Has had every test for headaches, outside of allergy tests. After several months of being headache free, he has again started with severe headaches. I can't convince him to see his doctor, because all tests showed nothing "wrong".
