A Homeopathic Perspective on Headaches (Migraine)
Writings by Dana Ullman, MPH (Excepted from The One Minute or So Healer , Tarcher/Putnam) This book does not primarily focus on how to use homeopathic medicines but instead provides information on various natural health strategies to treat common ailments. WARNING: This book is a lighthearted practical health guide. Laughter may be a side effect.
  • It is accurate to tell a person with a migraine that the pain is all in their head. Considering that a migraine sufferer's head usually feels like it is the size of a city block, that's a lot of pain. During a migraine headache, blood vessels first become overly constricted, then abnormally widened. You usually experience this pain on one side of the head, which can make you feel lopsided. Migraines are often triggered by psychological stress, but unlike tension headaches, migraines tend to begin after a stressed person is finally able to relax; then that "relaxing" weekend or vacation becomes relaxation hell.

MIGRAINE More than 28 million Americans suffer from migraine, striking three times more women than men. This vascular headache is most commonly experienced between the ages of 15 and 55, and 70% to 80% of sufferers have a family history of migraine. Many factors can trigger migraine attacks such as alteration of sleep-wake cycle; missing or delaying a meal; medications that cause a swelling of the blood vessels; daily or near-daily use of medications designed for relieving headache attacks; bright lights, sunlight, and fluorescent lights; TV and movie viewing; certain foods; and excessive noise. Stress and/or underlying depression are important trigger factors that can be diagnosed and treated adequately. Migraine characteristics include:
  • Pain typically on one side of the head
  • Pain has a pulsating or throbbing quality
  • Moderate to intense pain affecting daily activities
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light and sound
  • Attacks last four to 72 hours, sometimes longer
  • Visual disturbances or aura
  • Exertion such as climbing stairs makes headache worse Approximately one-fifth of migraine sufferers experience aura, the warning associated with migraine, prior to the headache pain. Visual disturbances such as wavy lines, dots or flashing lights and blind spots as well as disruptions in smell, taste or touch begin from twenty minutes to one hour before the actual onset of migraine. The origin of aura is not well understood. It has been thought to be due to constriction of small arterioles supplying specific areas of the brain. Others believe it to be due to transient changes in the activity of specific nerve cells.

    Migraine Headaches
What most people think are migraine headaches are really tension headaches. "Real" migraine headaches are usually associated with nausea or vomiting and tend to be preceded by seeing flashes of light, zigzags, blind spots, or stars. Doctors call these preceding visual symptoms "auras," which are not nearly as much fun or as practical as what New Age people refer to as auras (and the nausea is no fun at all). Migraines are often triggered by psychological stress, but distinct from tension headaches, migraines tend to begin after a stressed person is finally able to relax; then that "relaxing" weekend or vacation becomes relaxation hell. During a migraine headache, blood vessels initially become overly constricted and then abnormally widened. You usually experience this pain on one side of the head, which can make you feel lopsided. Causes of Migraine Headaches
by Sue Dyson Anyone who has ever suffered from migraine will be only too aware of the effects of the illness on daily life. According to the National Headache Foundation — an organization set up to help migraine and other headache sufferers — American industry loses around $50 billion from absenteeism and medical expenses, all linked to headache pain. In fact, headaches account for about 157 million lost working days in a year. But we are not just talking about inconvenience and economic difficulties; the cost in terms of individual suffering is infinitely higher. Apart from the practical problems they face, sufferers and their friends and families are often in a state of anxiety and bewilderment, particularly in the days following initial diagnosis.

What is a migraine and how does it differ from tension headaches?
Tension headaches are usually described as a continuous pressure pain or tightness of varying severity over the entire head, whereas migraine headaches are a severe, throbbing pain over one or both temples, or behind one eye or ear, and are often accompanied by nausea and vomiting. A migraine often starts on waking up in the morning, but can occur later in the day and can last hours to one or two days. In individuals with a form of migraine called classic migraine, visual symptoms described as bluriness, dazzling zigzag lines, blind spots or sensitivity to light occur just before and sometimes during the headache. While fatigue and stress can sometimes bring on both tension and migraine headaches, bright lights, noise and alcohol are specific factors that can trigger a migraine.

headaches migraines. migraine is a form of headache. migraine can accompany, in some cases, another type of headache called tension headache.
    http://www.crystalinks.com/migraines.html
    Headaches - Migraines
Migraine is a form of headache. It is a neurologic disease of vascular origin characterized by attacks of sharp pain involving (usually) one half of the skull and accompanied by nausea, vomiting, photophobia and occasionally visual (or rarely other) disturbances known as aura. The symptoms and their timing vary considerably among migraine suffers, and to a lesser extent from one migraine attack to the next. Migraine is caused by the constriction of the blood vessels of the head and neck. Classical migraine (migraine with aura) is forerun by a group of symptoms called aura, whereas common migraine does not have any indicator for the impending headache. A few (perhaps fortunate) people actually get aura without migraine. Migraine can accompany, in some cases, another type of headache called tension headache. Migraine often runs in families and starts in adolescence, although some research indicates that it can start in early childhood or even in utero. Migraine occurs more frequently in women than men, and is most common between ages 15-45, with the frequency of attacks declining with age in most cases. Continued - Wikipedia

Listed below are various web sites related to migraine headache information. I found through my surfing that many migraine "hits" were true dead ends. Each of the ones listed below provides useful or helpful information of one type or another. As you can see, there are not a great many links, but as I continue to surf I will add to this. Feel free to e-mail me (see address below) if you have links you wish to add. As a migraine sufferer, I would also have a personal interest in anything you might be able to add. As an aside, I started the "Sugar Busters" diet, which is essentially a very low glycemic diet. Coincidentally, my migraine headaches decreased in frequency and intensity (not to mention the weight loss I achieved which had heretofore been difficult on other diets). If you're interested in this diet, I suggest that you visit the Mining Company site, If you are interested in general medical sites to visit, please go to my Medical Links for M.T.s and Others

These combination medicines may provide better pain relief than either aspirin or codeine used alone. In some cases, relief of pain may come at lower doses of each medicine. Codeine is a narcotic analgesic ( nar-KOT-ik an-al-JEE-zik) that acts in the central nervous system (CNS) to relieve pain. Many of its side effects are also caused by actions in the CNS. Butalbital and phenobarbital belong to the group of medicines called barbiturates. Barbiturates also act in the CNS to produce their effects. When you use a barbiturate or codeine for a long time, your body may get used to the medicine so that larger amounts are needed to produce the same effects. This is called tolerance to the medicine. Also, barbiturates and codeine may become habit-forming (causing mental or physical dependence) when they are used for a long time or in large doses. Physical dependence may lead to withdrawal symptoms when you stop taking the medicine. In patients who get headaches, the first symptom of withdrawal may be new (rebound) headaches. The butalbital, aspirin, and codeine combination also contains caffeine (kaf-EEN) . Caffeine may help to relieve headaches. However, caffeine can also cause physical dependence when it is used for a long time. This may lead to withdrawal (rebound) headaches when you stop taking it.
