HEADACHES INTRODUCTION. The most common pain complaint of civilized man, headache pain may be mild and of short duration, or it can be severe enough to incapacitate the sufferer totally. Fortunately, the majority of headaches do not have a serious cause. In fact, chronic headaches are rarely caused by organic diseases such as brain tumors. Headache is one of the most common complaints of those who suffer with various types of TMJ problems. The first well-known classification of headache pain was proposed in 1962 by the Ad Hoc Committee on Classification of Headache of the National Institute of Neurolgical Diseases and Blindness. This committee divided headache pain into three (3) basic categories: (1) vascular headaces; (2) traction-inflammatory headaches; and, (3) muscle contraction headaches. Because there are certainly more than three main types of headaches, in 1987 the International Headache Society developed more specific criteria to provide greater uniformity and reproducibility in the diagnosis of headache. This new classification system divided headache pain into 13 different categories, with TMJ and facial pain falling into category number 11: Headache or facial pain associted with disorder of cranium, neck, eyes, nose, sinuses, teeth, mouth, or other facial or cranial structures.

Migraine Headache A migraine is a very bad headache that tends to recur. With a migraine, you may feel nauseated and might vomit. The pain is usually on one side of your head and you may be very sensitive to bright lights and noises. Moving around can make the headache feel worse. There are many forms of migraine headaches. Classic and common are the two major varieties. SYMPTOMS OF A MIGRAINE
The basic difference between the two types of migraine is the appearance of an "aura." The aura is the occurrence of neurological symptoms 10-30 minutes before the classic migraine attack. You may see flashing lights, zigzag lines or may temporarily lose vision. Other symptoms of classic migraine include speech difficulty, confusion, weakness of an arm or leg and tingling of face or hands. The pain of a classic migraine headache is described as an intense throbbing or pounding felt in the forehead/temple, ear/jaw or around the eyes. Classic migraine starts on one side of the head but may eventually spread to the other side. An attack may last one to two pain-racked days. The common migraine - a term that reflects the disorder's more frequent occurrence in the general population - is not preceded by an aura. Some people do experience a variety of vague symptoms before common migraines - mental fuzziness, mood changes, fatigue, and unusual retention of fluid. During the headache phase of a common migraine, you may have abdominal pain and diarrhea, increased urination, nausea and vomiting. Both classic and common migraines can strike as often as several times a week or rarely as once every few years.

Headaches: Migraine
We don't fully understand all the causes of migraine headaches. We do know that they are related to changes in the blood flow within the vessels that supply blood to the head and brain. Migraines tend to run in families, and usually first show up in the teen or young adult years. They are more common in women and often occur during, or right before, a woman's menstrual period. A typical migraine causes a severe throbbing pain on one side of the head. The pain builds up during an attack and can last for several hours. Sometimes migraine pain covers both sides of the head and is a dull pain. Symptoms that accompany migraine headache include:
  • seeing stars, flashes or zigzags blurred vision photosensitivity (bright lights hurt the eyes) feeling sick to your stomach loss of appetite being at a loss for words numbness or tingling or weakness or clumsiness
A migraine headache can be triggered by:
  • stress lack of sleep skipping a meal using alcohol taking birth control pills changes in the weather chocolate red wine MSG food preservatives or caffeine
The changes or foods that bring on a migraine are likely to be different for each person. It helps to try to identify what happens before a migraine headache starts, what 'happens' to start the headache, and then try to avoid those things in the future. Counseling or relaxation techniques for reducing stress may be useful in preventing attacks.

Brain Migraine headaches affect about 6 out of 100 people. They are a common type of chronic headache. They most commonly occur in women and usually begin between the ages of 10 and 46. In some cases, they appear to run in families. Migraines occur when blood vessels of the head and neck spasm or constrict, which decreases blood flow to the brain. Minutes to hours later, the blood vessels dilate (enlarge), resulting in a severe headache. Inflammation around the blood vessels also occurs in some cases.

Heading Off Migraine Pain
by Tamar Nordenberg In the first quarter of Super Bowl XXXII last January, Denver Broncos running back Terrell Davis was hit hard and walked off the field with a towel draped over his head. A developing migraine made the sunlight difficult to bear. So how did a person suffering from migraine, a condition that can cause debilitating pain, return after halftime to score the winning touchdown and earn Most Valuable Player status? The answer: He recognized the early warning signs and immediately took an effective drug to control his pain. Michael John Coleman, founder of Migraine Awareness Group: A National Understanding for Migraineurs, or MAGNUM , appreciates the challenges migraine sufferers face. Coleman has himself suffered with bouts of severe migraine headache pain since age 6. During an attack, he says, "I felt like I was being beaten up by a gang." Coleman's attacks used to last 72 hours or more; a couple lasted more than two weeks straight. "It was nightmarish, when I look back at it. I don't know if I could live through that again." Not Your Usual Headache More than 26 million Americans suffer from the neurologic disorder of migraine, according to the American Medical Association. No medical test exists for migraine, so the diagnosis is based on having some or all of the following symptoms:

Many researchers and doctors are no longer drawing distinct lines between tension and migraine headaches . They may only be different degrees of the same disorder, tension headaches being less severe than migraines . Headaches have been difficult to study for several reasons and continue to be misunderstood and mistreated. Although a headache may be associated with a serious medical condition, most headaches are not serious, even when debilitating. Headaches can be caused by a wide variety of factors, but the overwhelming majority are of the tension/ migraine type. Headaches which may be more serious are those that:

Headache
Definition
A headache involves pain in the head which can arise from many disorders or may be a disorder in and of itself. Description
There are three types of primary headaches: tension-type (muscular contraction headache), migraine (vascular headaches), and cluster. Virtually everyone experiences a tension-type headache at some point. An estimated 18% of American women suffer migraines, compared to 6% of men. Cluster headaches affect fewer than 0.5% of the population, and men account for approximately 80% of all cases. Headaches caused by illness are secondary headaches and are not included in these numbers.
Traditional theories about headaches link tension-type headaches to muscle contraction, and migraine and cluster headaches to blood vessel dilation (swelling). Pain-sensitive structures in the head include blood vessel walls, membranous coverings of the brain, and scalp and neck muscles. Brain tissue itself has no sensitivity to pain. Therefore, headaches may result from contraction of the muscles of the scalp, face or neck; dilation of the blood vessels in the head; or brain swelling that stretches the brain's coverings. Involvement of specific nerves of the face and head may also cause characteristic headaches. Sinus inflammation is a common cause of headache. Keeping a headache diary may help link headaches to stressful occurrences, menstrual phases, food triggers, or medication.
