Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Definition:
Migraine is a type of headache . See also classic migraine (migraine with an aura); common migraine (migraine without an aura); mixed tension migraine (has features of both migraines and tension headache
Alternative Names: Headache - migraine
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: The cause of migraine is not known. Migraine headaches are associated with abnormalities in blood flow through the brain, which is probably responsible for many of the symptoms. However, it is not known with certainty why this happens or how it causes these symptoms. Classic migraine is preceded by an aura, which is a group of warning symptoms that indicates a pending migraine headache. Common migraine does not have an associated aura.
Migraine headaches affect about 6 out of 100 people. They are a common type of chronic headache. Migraines most commonly occur in women and usually begin between the ages of 10 and 46. They may run in families in some cases. Classic migraine accounts for about one-sixth of all migraines. Common migraine and other (rare) forms account for the rest. Risk factors include a strong family history of migraine, some medical conditions, and the use of certain medications (such as birth control pills).

Overview Headaches may occur for any number of reasons including: sinus conditions, hypertension, allergies, tumors, hormonal changes, and most frequently, stress. They are not usually associated with problems related to the eyes. Migraine headaches Migraine, a type of headache that is often hereditary, usually first surfaces between the ages of 15 and 30. They are most common among women and are thought to be related to stress and some foods. Migraine headaches may cause visual symptoms such as light flashes , temporary blind spots, and blurred vision. Migraines are thought to be caused by the dilation and constriction of arteries in the head. These headaches can be extremely painful. The pain is often limited to one side of the head, and may be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. In many cases, migraines are believed to be brought on by stress. This "Friday night" headache often follows the stress relief of a frenetic week during which the blood vessels in the head relax and constrict. Certain foods and additives such as chocolate, alcohol, dairy, and MSG are also attributed to migraines. However, for many, the cause is variable and extremely difficult to pinpoint.

Headache: Migraine or Sinuses?
By Bethanne Black , HealthAtoZ contributing writer Millions of people who suffer from migraine and sinus headache pain say they wouldn't wish it on their worst enemy. Headaches are miserable. These beasts come in all shapes and sizesdull persistent throbbing, sharp stabbing pain, achy head or sinus pressure. Sometimes, confusing symptoms can make it difficult to tell one type from another. What you once thought was a sinus headache because of a cold, weather changes or seasonal allergies, could possibly be a full-blown migraine. Although there are many effective treatments available to relieve headaches, many people don't see their doctors about headache pain and end up missing the correct diagnosis and helpful treatment. "In their lifetime, almost 90 percent of people will have a memorable headache, and about one in four have recurrent episodes of headaches," says Dr. Roger Cady, director of the Headache Care Center in Springfield, MO, and a frequent spokesman for the National Headache Foundation. About 12 percent of the American population suffers from chronic migraines, with women being affected three times as often as men, Cady says. "It's very prevalent and is one of the leading causes of work absenteeism, with a lot of lost productivity at work and home. In very many ways, it interferes with people's lives."

A comparison between chiropractic management and outpatient management of chronic mechanical low back pain
In collaboration with the chronic pain clinics of both the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff and the Royal Oldham Hospital, Oldham Chronic low back pain remains a predominant disabling condition affecting quality of life, while its therapeutic management seems to lack consistency. Various systematic reviews of randomised controlled trials of the most common interventions have identified methodological flaws, making meaningful conclusions difficult regarding their efficacy with respect to low back pain treatment.
Consecutive patients presenting with mechanical low back pain are being randomised in two groups, receiving medical or chiropractic care, respectively. Outcome measures include: perceived pain intensity, perceived disability, quality of life and patient satisfaction. The medication use is also being monitored during the trial. Outcome measures are being recorded on inclusion, 4 weeks after inclusion, (1st treatment), bi-weekly for the duration of treatment (8 weeks), on treatment completion and at 1,3 and 6 months following. Treatment is taking place at the chronic pain clinic of the respective hospitals.
