Inaugural Address of President Rutherford B. Hayes Monday, March 5, 1877 Fellow-Citizens:
WE have assembled to repeat the public ceremonial, begun by Washington,
observed by all my predecessors, and now a time-honored custom, which marks
the commencement of a new term of the Presidential office. Called to the
duties of this great trust, I proceed, in compliance with usage, to announce
some of the leading principles, on the subjects that now chiefly engage the
public attention, by which it is my desire to be guided in the discharge of
those duties. I shall not undertake to lay down irrevocably principles or
measures of administration, but rather to speak of the motives which should
animate us, and to suggest certain important ends to be attained in
accordance with our institutions and essential to the welfare of our country.

Hayes? Was he a great or inconsequential president? How did his early life and career shape his later years? How did his triumphs and failures alter our history? And why should we care? Ari Hoogenboom's masterful life of Hayes definitively answers those questions and shows why our nineteenth president deserves far greater recognition than he's received in the past. The first biography of Hayes in nearly fifty years, Hoogenboom's book recreates the rapidly changing world of Victorian America as experienced by one of its most reflective and perceptive figures. The Hayes that emerges is a much more progressive and far-sighted leader than previously suggested. He was, Hoogenboom argues, neither a Southern sympathizer nor an exemplar of the "Greedy Gilded Age." Rather, he was a devout, pragmatic champion of equal rights. Hayes's colorful life was rooted in his frontier experiences in Ohio and galvanized on Civil War battlefields, where he survived five wounds and was ultimately promoted to major general. No other president was under fire on the front lines as much as Hayes.

White House Studies
Fall, 2002 by Robert P. Watson
OVERVIEW When it opened on May 30, 1916, the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center became the first such institution of its kind and the first presidential library. The Center was founded by Webb C. Hayes, son of Rutherford and Lucy Webb Hayes, and the Ohio Historical Society. The 25-acre park known as Spiegel Grove on which the Center is located contains the Hayes family home, a library, museum, another historic Victorian home, and other facilities. The park is surrounded by a wrought iron fence and six original gates. The Hayes home is a 33-room mansion built between the years 1859 and 1863 by Hayes's uncle. The construction took five years to be completed because of the scarcity of materials during the Civil War. Rutherford and Lucy Hayes loved their two-story brick home and spent their retirement after his service in the Civil War, political career, and presidency (1877-1881) enjoying the home as well as renovating and expanding the mansion. Hayes added a reception room, several bedrooms, servants quarters, enlarged the dining room, and installed indoor plumbing. Both Rutherford and Lucy Hayes died at the home.

Hayes moved quickly to assuage the South. He appointed a former Confederate to his cabinet, distributed patronage to moderate southern Democrats, and soon removed the last federal troops from the region. These concessions alienated many Republicans. Hayes was a firm nationalist. Despite his conciliatory policy toward the South, he consistently fought Democratic efforts to delimit the powers of the national government and bipartisan attempts to curtail the powers of the presidency. He was a cautious, judicious, eminently respectable president, arousing little enthusiasm, but winning the somewhat grudging admiration both of his contemporaries and of historians. Choosing not to run for a second term, Hayes retired in 1881 to his home in Fremont, Ohio, where he died on Jan. 17, 1893. Presidents Directory

On October 4, 1822, Rutherford Birchard Hayes was born in Delaware, Ohio. A Harvard Law School graduate, Hayes entered politics after a successful law career in Cincinnati and military service in the Civil War. He served as a Republican representative in Congress from 1865 to 1867 and was later elected governor of Ohio. Rutherford B. Hayes became the 19th U.S. president in 1877 after a bitterly-contested election against Democrat Samuel J. Tilden of New York. Tilden won the popular vote, but disputed electoral ballots from four states prompted Congress to create a special electoral commission to decide the election's result. The fifteen-man commission of congressmen and Supreme Court justices, eight of whom were Republicans, voted along party lines deciding the election in Hayes's favor. The electoral dispute has come to be known as the Tilden-Hayes Affair. Because of the tension surrounding this partisan decision, Hayes secretly took the oath of office in the White House Red Room . He was the first president to be sworn in at the residence.

Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th U. S. President Rutherford B. Hayes was a one term President, and he won the election by one electoral vote. Hardly a landslide. Hayes was another of the Ohio born President's, born the same year that Grant was born, 1822. Hayes fought in the Civil War and eventually held the rank of Brevet Major General. He was elected to the House of Respresentives in 1865, without campaigning. After one term in congress, he served three terms as Governor of Ohio (1867-1876). As mentioned above, he served only one term as President, but he had decided not to seek re-election and retired from office after his term was up. He died in 1893. The Hayes descent from Hugh Capet consists of a simple descent chart that contains some links to other families having multiple connections. Enjoy! Table of Contents Chapter 15 Mail

This made Polk the first president to run the country extending from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to the Pacific Ocean. It was during President Polk’s term in 1845 that the abolitionist and escaped slave Frederick Douglass wrote his autobiography, endangering his own freedom by doing so. President Polk believed that the United States had a "manifest destiny" to expand. His attempts to gain more of Texas, New Mexico, and California led to the Mexican War. The invention of the revolver by Samuel Colt helped the U.S. to win this war and gain five hundred thousand square miles of land. Polk had promised to serve only one term in office. True to his word he retired at the end of his term. He died only three months after

Rutherford B. Hayes
By Jessica Rutherford B. Hayes was born in 1822 in Delaware, Ohio, two months after his father's death. He was the fifth child of Rutherford Hayes Jr. and Sophia Birchard Hayes. He went to school at Norwalk Academy in Ohio, and then to a private school in Middletown, Connecticut. He went to Kenyon College at Gambier, Ohio, graduating in 1842. He entered Harvard Law School and he worked in a law office for ten months in Columbus, Ohio and he became a licensed attorney in 1845. In December 1852, Hayes married Lucy Ware Webb, a childhood sweetheart. Rutherford and Lucy had seven sons and one daughter. Three of their sons died. In 1854 with the earnings of his practice and aid from his uncle, Hayes purchased a house. Rutherford Hayes was brave because even though he a lot of wounds, he still never gave up in the Civil War. Hayes was a strong support of the Federal Union. "I would prefer to go into it if I knew I was to die or be killed in the course of it," he wrote in his diary. As major in the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Hayes was wounded in action a number of times. Even though there was a tie in the election Rutherford Hayes still won. Rutherford Hayes became the President in the closest electoral contest in U.S. history winning over Samuel J. Tilden by one electoral vote. During his time of office, Hayes supported laws that he thought were right and just without worrying about making political enemies.
