Hale Kuamo'o , the Hawaiian Language Center at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo, is the primary source of translated and original curriculum materials for the Papahana Kaiapuni Hawai'i, the Hawaiian Language Immersion Program. The Hale Kuamo'o has also been the leading advocote for the use of computers in the Hawaiian immersion classroom, and has been instrumental in developing the means by which the children of this program can interact with the computer through the Hawaiian language.
Operating System, Fonts, and Programs
It should be noted at this point that, unless otherwise noted, all work described in this article was accomplished on Apple Macintosh computers. In 1993, finding many different types Hawaiian language font sets and investigating the strengths and weaknesses of each, the Hale Kuamo'o developed the " HI Font Standard ," which is now not only used by all of the Hawaiian language immersion schools, University offices, and other Hawaiian language organizations, but has also been adopted by at least one commercial font vendor. A custom keyboard layout makes it much easier to generate these characers as well. The work of the Hale Kuamo'o has made it possible to not only type and print in Hawaiian with the diacritical marks required by the language, but also to translate nearly any Macintosh program so that all of the user interface is in Hawaiian. Programs such as ClarisWorks, KidPix, Mario Teachers Typing, and the FirstClass Client have been translated into Hawaiian.

Was Hawaiian Language Illegal? Did the Evil Haoles Suppress Hawaiian Language As A Way of Oppressing Kanaka Maoli and Destroying Their Culture?
Hawaiian sovereignty activists like to say that "Hawaiian language was made illegal." They like to say that "Here in our own homeland we were forbidden from speaking Hawaiian, and our grandmothers have told us how they were punished for speaking it."
The activists like to say Hawaiian language was illegal because it magnifies their claim to victimhood status. It's one more way those haole oppressors turned the natives of this land into a poor, downtrodden people who have the worst statistics for education, health, incarceration drug abuse, etc. "Those haoles stole our land, and our nation, and even made our language illegal right here in our own homeland. So of course we're angry, we feel deep pain, and we're entitled to huge reparations for the damage done to us."
The editor of this website, Ken Conklin, has personally heard and seen such claims frequently asserted on TV, in Hawaiian history and language classes, and in published newspaper articles, since first coming to live permanently in Hawai'i in 1992. Some Maui high school students started publishing letters to editor trumpeting this claim in December 2003; at which point Ken Conklin decided to begin accumulating these statements for posterity. HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE IMMERSION SCHOOLS AS VEHICLES FOR CULTURAL INDOCTRINATION AND ETHNIC NATIONALISM
The Hawaiian language immersion schools were, in effect, public charter schools long before that latter concept became popular.
The apparent purpose of the immersion schools was to revive a nearly extinct language, by creating native speakers. The speakers would be "native speakers" in two senses: they were growing up speaking the language in everyday use “from hanabata days” or “from small-kid time”; and nearly all of them were Native Hawaiians.
Hawaiians are not indigenous;

Hawaiians by their own choice are fully assimilated with non-Hawaiian full partners;

The Hawaiian Kingdom provided fully equal rights to all persons born or naturalized in Hawai'i, regardless of race;

No reparations are owed to Native Hawaiians for any historical events;
...
Unity and equality with aloha for all are fundamental values worth preserving.

The best reason for supporting publicly funded Hawaiian language immersion schools is that Hawaiian language is a great treasure for all the world, and especially for those of us lucky enough to live here. We support Hawaiian language for some of the same reasons we support the continued existence of the nene or the unobstructed view from the Pali overlook. So long as people of all racial and ethnic groups are truly welcome to learn Hawaiian language and even to attend school in a Hawaiian immersion program, without being stigmatized as culturally or racially inferior, there is no legal or moral reason to complain.

Seven constants: h, k, l, m, n, p, w and the vowels: a, e, i, o, u make up the Hawaiian alphabet. What could be easier? But there's a twist - Hawaiian along with several Polynesian languages, uses two diacritical marks to change the pronunciation and meaning of words. The kahako is a macron, a short, horizontal line that is used over vowels. It indicates to the speaker to slightly draw out the sound of the vowel that it appears over. The final "o" in kahako has a macron above it. The 'okina is the single, open quote that appears frequently before vowels. It indicates a glottal stop or clear break between vowels, such as in the english phrase "uh-oh". The 'okina is easy to duplicate in type using the single apostrophe. But, when used on a website it can cause difficulty with Internet search tools. For example, a search on "Hawai'i" and "Hawaii" do not always return the same results. The macron is impossible to implement with current technology, except with downloadable fonts. But using these fonts would make our pages inaccessible to users without the latest graphic oriented browsers. So we have chosen to use the correct diacritical markings for all graphics, but are unable to use them in regular text. Please use the following graphic as an introduction to the correct spelling of some of our plants, animals and places.

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Hawaiian is the ancestral language Language is a system of gestures, grammar, signs, sounds, symbols, and words which are used to represent and communicate concepts, ideas, meanings, and thoughts; language is a "semantic code". The study of language is linguistics, an academic discipline founded by Ferdinand de Saussure. Those who speak a language are part of that language's linguistic community.
Human languages
Making a principled distinction between one human language and another is often not possible. One major issue is the dialect continuum phenomena, where the boundaries between named language groups are necessarily arbitrary. For instance, there are dialects of German very similar to Dutch which are not mutually intelligible with other dialects of (what we call) German.

    E ven though I have been a student of the Hawaiian language for many years, I am still constantly amazed by the beauty as well as the simplicity, and at the same time, complexity of the language. Though there are only 12 letters (a, e, i, o, u, h, k, l, m, n, p, w) and the okina (looks sort of like an apostrophe), there are a multitude of ways to express a single thought. Like I said, this can be simple or complex. Then there is kauna , the hidden meaning inside Hawaiian language, wherein it seems one is speaking about something obvious when one is actually talking about something completely different. It would be impossible to give you an in-depth Hawaiian language lesson, but it's good to know a few words and how to pronounce them when you visit our island. You'll hear them everywhere. If you know Spanish it will help with vowel pronunciation. Remember that all letters are pronounced. The okina is similar to the glottal stop in the cockney pronunciation of "bottle" or the word "uh-oh". Words are never pluralized by adding "s" and they never end in a consonant. The letter "W" is sometimes pronounced like the letter "V", sometimes "W", and sometimes a combination of the two sounds. The pronunciations I've shown below are as close as I can get because there are subtleties too difficult to explain. But if you pronounce them like I have written them you'll be close enough. By the way, this is a legal language here and can be used in a court of law.

    Ka `Olelo Hawai`i (The Hawaiian Language) TRACING THE HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE Useful Phrases In my humble opinion, the Hawaiian language is the most beautiful language in the world. My first exposure to the first language of our Islands, as a youngster in Minnesota, was listening to the one or two expressions of greetings and farewell that opened and closed the famous "Hawai`i Calls" radio shows in the 40s and early 50s. I was more apt to hear Norwegian from my parents and other family and friends, or Swedish from our neighbors.
    Many of the songs on "Hawai`i Calls" were sung in Hawaiian, but I don't recall that I understood more than the occasional Hawaiian word that Webley Edwards translated for us. But it was enough to peak my interest and over the years since then, I have found that my love of this Polynesian language continues to grow, every day.
    Mahalo to scholars Mary Kawena Puku`i, Samuel Elbert and many others who set the stage for the renaissance we now enjoy.
    I thank the many manaleo, native speakers, who helped me learn Hawaiian, especially Uncle Jimmy Kaholokula, Aunty Alice Namakelua, Aunty Edith Kanaka`ole, Uncle Sam Kong Kee, Sol K. Bright, Dorothy Kahananui, Napua Stevens, and others.

    Hawaiian language
    Hawaiian is the ancestral language of the indigenous people of the Hawaiian Islands , the Hawaiians, a Polynesian people. Hawaiian, along with English , is an official language of the State of Hawai'i . It is notable for having a small phoneme inventory (see Hawaiian alphabet, below), like many of its Polynesia n cousins. Especially notable is the fact that it lacks the phoneme /t/, one of only a few languages to lack such a phoneme. Hawaiian is a member of the Austronesian language family , related to Samoan, Maori Fijian , and other languages spoken throughout Polynesia , and more distantly to some Southeast Asia n and Indian Ocean languages. Hawaiian is a endangered language. On most of the islands, Hawaiian has been displaced by English and is no longer used as the daily language of communication. The exception to this is Ni'ihau which, because it is a privately owned island and visitation by outsiders strictly controlled, still uses Hawaiian in daily communications. For a variety of reasons starting around , the number of first language speakers of Hawaiian was dimished from 37,000 to 1,000; half of these remaining are now in their seventies or eighties (see Ethnologue report below for citations).
