IF YOU WANT TO STUDY IN THE UNITED STATES: TECHNICAL AND VOCATIONAL STUDIES
In the United States, a wide variety of institutions prepare people for technical and vocational occupations. Some schools train for a single job or industry; others offer programs for many different occupations. Programs can last from a few weeks to several years. Courses tend to stress application rather than theory. Vocational studies are intended to lead to immediate employment. Hands-on training is often a component of the study program and the schools are often called "trade" schools. Vocational studies vary in length from a week to two years and lead to certificates of completion rather than degrees. Common fields of study include construction, automotive mechanics, drafting and secretarial services. Technical education requires that the student learn concepts, theory and design in addition to practical training. Programs are offered at technical, community and junior colleges and some four-year colleges and universities. Two-year programs generally result in either associate of applied science degrees or pre-baccalaureate technical degrees. Common studies include: computer science, engineering technology, communication technology, allied health, nursing, accounting, business management, fire science, agribusiness, renewable natural resources and horticulture. To obtain a degree, students are required to successfully complete courses not only within their specialty but also courses in general education such as English, mathematics, sciences and history.

    vocational education
We must give up obsession with
test scores and start preparing Hawaii students
for the real world of work
By David S. Matsumoto When it comes to improving public school education in Hawaii, we may be asking ourselves the wrong question. Our local newspapers keep trying to direct our attention to test scores. They splash headlines which, from time to time, bemoan the low scores of public school students. Unfortunately, such headlines are mistaken. Hawaii's public schools (not unlike other public schools across our nation) are charged with providing a quality education to a complex and diverse mix of students. The educational goals and objectives of our student body, not surprisingly, are also complex and diverse. Simply put, however, standardized tests are not meaningful to anyone other than college and university admissions committees who must determine which high school seniors should be selected for enrollment to their campuses. But is preparation and admission to college the only measure of success for our public schools? I don't believe so.

Students can get a head start
    with good vocational training
During this election year, almost every candidate has advocated the need to improve public education in Hawaii. Just how to improve the system is open to debate, much of which has centered on the budget, quality of teachers, test scores and maintenance issues. Many employers in Hawaii say our high school graduates are not prepared for the job market. They are at a disadvantage to job seekers with experience, mainly because of a lack of vocational training in high school. For the large number of high school seniors who have no intention of going to college, entry to the work force requires that they have the knowledge and practical skills that will make them successful. Therefore, all elected officials should be asking themselves, "What should we expect of our students after a certain level of education?" The answer is that we expect them to be industrious and productive. Public schools should understand the economic and business vision of our state and produce graduates who can carry out that vision. The Department of Education's school-to-work partnership has teamed up with the business community for several years to teach students what it takes to succeed in the business world. But this program alone is not sufficient. A renewed focus on vocational training also is in order.

When preparing for a career in the field of business and finance, perhaps the most important decision to be made is what specifically you wish to learn and which educational institution can most capably provide you with that knowledge. At the junior college or vocational school level, more specific courses are available in areas such as general business management or technical business machine maintenance. At the university level and beyond, the focus is on the theories and underlying principles of business and finance and their application to the workings of the business world. Business programs offered at most major colleges and universities allow the student to focus on a very specific area of interest within the field of business and finance. Below is a list of domestic and international business schools.
