The Hawaii McGruff Crime Prevention Campaign was established in 1986 to instill the concept of crime prevention and safety at an early age among the state's youngsters. As a national symbol of crime prevention, McGruff has significantly influenced and raised the awareness of Hawaii's children on the dangers of drugs and crime. McGruff's message has gone beyond the classroom to reach the community at large. His message of drug and crime prevention has been heard by thousands of children and adults alike at community events. Through safety tips and the distribution of drug and crime prevention materials (educational brochures, coloring books, etc.), we hope to reach the whole community. Hawaii Schools See Double In Fire Safety Violations
High Schools Among Top Violators
POSTED: 7:01 p.m. HST July 17, 2003
UPDATED: 10:36 a.m. HST July 18, 2003
HONOLULU The number of fire code violations in Hawaii's schools has doubled this year. However, the number of schools that faced violations dropped. An annual inspection showed there were 520 individual fire code violations this year compared to 234 last year. Video VIDEO REPORT The number of schools that passed their inspections went up by 14 schools. There were 190 schools with zero violations last year. This year there were 204 schools without violations. That number is still much lower than the 232 schools that passed in the 1996-1997 school year. A school must have no violations in order to pass the inspection. Even one violation would require a failing grade. Oahu topped the list with some of the worst performers. Pearl City High School had 61 violations, Nanakuli High School and Intermediate had 56, Mililani High School had 55 and Aiea High School finished out the year with 52 violations. High schools in general had the highest numbers of violations.
