    Cover Story
    The Christmas Countdown
The Department gathered at DDO on December 13, 1996 for the annual Christmas Countdown. Organized by GASA, the event was well-attended by students, staff, faculty and friends. Following the pizza and salads everyone gathered outside the building for the group photograph, this year made tremendously humorous by Karl's putative photographic assistant. A simple overturned beer bottle in the pants pocket of our assistant photographer was enough to turn a normally smiling group into a laughing-to-tears mob. For THAT photograph, link to http://www.astro.utoronto.ca/group.1996.html The planned entertainment then began in the lecture room and judging by the loud laughter echoing the halls of the observatory, the offerings were all well received. Our Santa should be congratulated on his performance, and GASA for its beneficience. During tea and coffee, the mysterious Droppings (the anti-Doings) appeared. Desserts were temporarily ignored as everyone became absorbed by the Droppings. Some seconds later the room returned to its normal state with conversations and fun ending the silence. Thanks are due GASA for arranging the 1996 Countdown, and to Florence Unwin for organizing the food and decorations.

Exceedingly Useful and Well Written Guide for Nudists This book (and its earlier editions) has been worth its weight in gold for finding clothing optional places in Hawaii, Italy, Key West and even locally here in the Phoenix area. Naked Places led me to what I think is the most gorgeous nude beach anywhere, that being Little Beach on the island of Maui. The photos in the book are very nice, but the descriptions are what really help the reader decide where they want to go. This is my Number One travel guide, as it should be for any man who likes to vacation naked and naturally. Future Master Sommeliers UNITE! This is the absolute best book with which to study for the tests given by the Guild of Master Sommeliers. Master Sommelier and Hospitality Professor Brian Julyan's long-awaited revision of SALES AND SERVICE FOR THE WINE PROFESSIONAL is finally available. Wine is covered in a succint, no-nonsense, easy-to-grasp, and immediately-useable manner. The same holds true for sections on beers, spirits, mineral waters, specialty coffees, traditional European cigar, cigarette, and cocktail service, and even telephone manner. Mr. Julyan's British background does become obvious with the section on how to greet royalty. While certainly amusing, this may not come in as handy for Americans. However, the rest of this guide book is so helpful to everyday operations that copies are sure to become dog-eared, well-worn, and kept at arms' reach by servers and supervisors alike instead of gathering dust on an executive's shelf. Educators and Sommeliers: this book is one-stop-shopping for all of those interested in the sales and service of wine, and is on the required reading list for the Master Sommelier program (now we can stop circulating that eight-year-old photocopied version from Hawaii!)

What's New? Registration In Stock Vehicles ... Site Map Railroad Historical Societies The Railroads are part of our nation's History and Culture. The railroads opened the "West" and played an important role in the development and history of almost every city and town in the USA and Canada. Railroad Historical Societies try to preserve old railroad records, photos and any other historical information they can find. Often they work with local Museums and Libraries; some of them maintain their own Libaries. The Railroads have had a very rocky history financially in the USA, and with the many bankruptcies, mergers and take-overs through the years, many railroad records have been lost forever. However, if you or someone you know has some old railroad records stored in the attic, or garage, please contact one of the Historical Societies below and perhaps you can contribute what you have to them so it can be preserved properly for the generations to come.. Most Railroad Historical Societies limit their interest to one railroad, or just a few that may have merged together to form a regional system. But membership and interest in those railroads tend to be found all over the USA. Hence the mailing address of a Historical Society may not even be in a town where that railroad ran through; more than likely the mailing address is dictated by the residence of the Historical Society Secretary, someone who is willing to volunteer a lot of his time to the task, and may have retired or had a job transfer that took him away from the region his favorite railroad ran in.

  • Impressions from Reno : Depository Library Council Meeting, April 2003 (1) Bush Administraton Rewriting Declassification E.O. 12295 A draft executive order (EO) expected to replace President Clinton's E.O. 12958 that focuses on national security classification and declassification policy, circulated for agency comment during the week of March 10th. Though no public hearings (as were held during the Clinton Administration) are slotted to take place, NARA officials are also meeting informally with various interested parties in an effort to explain the Bush Administration's thinking behind the proposed revision. Since it was issued by the Clinton White House, EO 12958 has dramatically accelerated the declassification process and has yielded close to a billion pages of historically valuable declassified documents. But according to Steven Aftergood, editor of the Federation of American Scientists newsletter Secrecy News, "In recent decades, whenever the presidency shifted from one party to another, the new president would issue an executive order on secrecy policy to serve as the foundation of the classification system. Typically, and at least rhetorically, the orders issued by Democratic presidents (e.g., Clinton's EO 12958) have emphasized disclosure, while those of Republican presidents (e.g., Reagan's EO 12356) have stressed secrecy."
