Hawaii: Geography
Hawaii, the 50th state (statehood on August 21, 1959) of the United States, consists of a group of volcanic islands in the central Pacific Ocean.
The land area of these islands are the emerged tops of a chain of volcanic mountains that form eight major islands and 124 islets, stretching in a 1,500-mile crescent from Kure Island in the west to the island of Hawaii in the east, encompassing an area of 6,459 square miles (16,729 square km).
The eight major islands at the eastern end of the chain are, from west to east, Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui, and the Big Island of Hawaii.
Volcanic activity has become dormant, with the exception of the volcanoes of Mauna Loa and Kilauea on the easternmost and largest island, Hawaii, where spectacular eruptions and lava flows take place from time to time. The highest Hawaiian mountains are Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, reaching 13,796 feet (4,205 m) and 13,678 feet (4,169 m) above sea level, respectively.
There is little erosion in the geologically young areas, where the terrain is domelike and the volcanic craters are clearly defined. In the older areas the mountains have been shaped and eroded by the action of sea, rain, and wind. Their aspects thus include sharp and craggy silhouettes; abrupt, vertically grooved cliffs pocked with caves; deep valleys; collapsed craters (calderas); and coastal plains.

Framework Demonstration Project
The State of Hawaii has applied for and received a Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) grant to carry out a framework demonstration project. The purpose of this project is to illustrate the application of the framework concept envisioned by the FGDC in their efforts in establishing a National Digital Geospatial Data Framework The project focuses on developing a cadastral framework data layer for the Island of Molokai. Participants in this effort are gathering boundary data for large land holdings including parcels of land owned by the State of Hawaii, the County of Maui, the federal government and large private land owners. For a detailed description of this project, please visit the Framework Demonstration Website which is being updated frequently by the prinicipals of the project, The University of Hawaii Geography Department. The federal grant is providing an opportunity for geospatial data users in the State of Hawaii to develop a process for collecting, recording and using a framework data layer. Once this process is established, it could then be applied to the entire State of Hawaii. Furthermore, the intent of this effort is to encourage geospatial data developers in Hawaii to use the framework layer as a standard reference layer when developing new spatial data. As such, all users of spatial data in Hawaii are invited to participate in this project. The following agencies and organizations have committed to participate in this effort:
  • Dept. of Land and Natural Resources, Forestry and Wildlife Division, Historic Preservation Division

The islands receive most rainfall from the Northeast Trades on their north and east flanks (called the windward side) as a result of orographic precipitation. Coastal areas in general and especially the south and west flanks or leeward sides, tend to be drier. Because of the frequent build-up of Tradewind clouds and potential showers, most tourist areas have been built on the leeward coasts of the islands. Mauna Kea is considered by some the highest mountain in the world, since its base is 3,280 fathoms low and top is 13,796 feet high (33,476 feet total).
