NFHS Bulletin The NFHS Bulletin is a series of four-page policy briefs summarizing secondary analysis of data from the 1992-93 National Family Health Survey (NFHS) in India. The series is copublished by the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) in Mumbai and the East-West Center. The NFHS collected information from nearly 90,000 Indian women on a range of demographic and health topics. Conducted under the auspices of the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the survey provides national and state-level estimates of fertility, infant and child mortality, family planning practice, maternal and child health, and the utilization of services available to mothers and children. IIPS conducted the survey in cooperation with consulting organizations and 18 population research centers throughout India. System Hui Malama Ola Na Oiwi Target Population The estimated 43,500 Native Hawaiians residing on the island of Hawaii, mostly in coastal towns and villages. Services Provided Hui Malama focuses on providing preventive health services. Staff provides health education and outreach and transportation to and from treatment. Care managers provide assistance in getting health insurance, medications, scheduling doctor appointments and routine health maintenance. Hui Malama does screenings for prostate, breast, and cervical cancer; cholesterol; high blood pressure; and diabetes; and promotes colo-rectal education and testing. Prenatal classes and referrals are also available. A nutritionist provides diet and nutrition counseling. Major Health Issues One of the greatest challenges faced by people residing on the island of Hawaii is the great distance they have to travel to receive health care. Hui Malama has worked to alleviate that problem by setting up outreach offices in remote areas, and by providing transportation to and from the doctor in four of its own vans. Hui Malama has also worked hard to make Native Hawaiians more aware of their health needs through screening and education programs. For Grandparents and Special Others Raising Children Hawaii Grandparents and Other Relatives Raising Children A State Fact Sheet August 2002 Across the country, more than six million children approximately 1 in 12 children are living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives. Hawaii has more than 113,000 children living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives. In many of these households, grandparents and other relatives are the primary caregivers (“kinship caregivers”) for children whose parents cannot or will not care for them due to substance abuse, illness and death, abuse and neglect, economic hardship, incarceration, divorce, domestic violence, and other family and community crises. In response to the growing numbers of these kinship care families, state legislatures, public and private agencies, and grassroots coalitions in Hawaii and across the country have begun to expand services and supports for children living with kin inside and outside of the foster care system. A Look at the Numbers: Kinship Care in Hawaii The data below show the numbers of grandparents who are living in households with at least one grandchild under the age of 18, as well as the numbers of grandparents who are the primary caregivers for these grandchildren. On Molokai a volleyball-basketball league was organized for older folks, and youth and kupuna are helping each other increase exercise and grow hydroponic vegetables and fruit. On Oahu the Nuuanu-Makiki Boys and Girls Club is focusing on programs to stop or prevent smoking and encourage fitness for nonathletic kids. These are just a few samples of statewide community efforts to "Start.Living.Healthy" a message directed to residents via television and radio. The state Health Department is spending most of its tobacco settlement money on the campaign, giving 26 communities $5,000 each to develop plans to deal with major health problems. Another $19,000 is allocated per community to carry out the approved plans.
