he University of Hawaii Surgical Residency Program seeks to prepare residents to become surgeons of the highest caliber. This program strives to accomplish this by providing each resident with a rich educational experience in a variety of clinical settings. The three main program components - curriculum, research, and service - are structured to enable the resident to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and clinical judgment needed for the practice of general surgery. The many graduates of the program that have become successful surgeons locally and in mainland communities benefited greatly from the wealth of teaching expertise and clinical experience afforded by their residency training in Hawaii. Program Organization
The University of Hawaii Surgical Residency Program (the Program) is an approved five-year general surgery training program. The Program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The design of the Program provides accommodation for those planning on subspecialization after one or two years of general surgery. Acceptance at the first year level is made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). All applicants must apply through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) . Eleven positions are available at this level. Eight are preliminary (P-18) and three are categorical (C-19). NRMP identification numbers are 299618 and 299619 respectively. The Program operates in a community hospital system in which patients are admitted and treated by private surgical attending physicians. The program director is responsible for program management, and delegates educational and administrative responsibilities to the Director of Surgical Education (DSE) at each participating hospital.
