About Hawaii Residency Programs, Inc.

In July 1982, the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine and six major Honolulu acute care facilities established the Hawaii Residency Programs, Inc. (HRP). HRP is a not-for-profit corporation which coordinates the administration of the university-directed residency training programs. HRP also acts as a liaison between the programs and the affiliated hospitals.
The John A. Burns School of Medicine and the hospitals cooperatively conduct the residency programs. This approach has proven more economical and increases benefits to the residents by involving community physicians and other health professionals in the training experience.
The programs offer post-graduate training to more than 200 residents in the specialties of internal medicine, general surgery, family practice, psychiatry (general, geriatric, child and adolescent and addictions), obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, pathology and orthopaedic surgery. The Transitional Residency Program provides a single year of clinical experience in various disciplines such as medicine and surgery. The Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) has accredited all HRP programs.

Policy Summary The project will use an experimental design and blinded measurement to evaluate comprehensively the process, outcomes, and cost-benefits of Hawaii's Healthy Start Program (HSP) for environmentally at-risk newborns and their families. The HSP is a well-established program of community-based screening to identify newborns at environmental risk for special health needs and home visiting by paraprofessionals to promote healthy family functioning and child development through role modeling, education, and linkage with community resources. Nationally, strong endorsement for home visiting programs in general and the HSP in particular renders the evaluation findings essential for informed policy and program development.
