E-mail this story Posted on: Tuesday, December 23, 2003 COMMENTARY Support multiple school districts By Jay P. Greene and Marcus A. Winters Gov. Linda Lingle has recently repeated her call to break up Hawai'i's enormous, single public school district into smaller units. Hawai'i could dramatically improve its public school system by supporting the governor in her attempt to end Hawai'i's reign as the only state that does not provide its citizens with a choice in the public school system their children must attend. Multiple school districts would go a long way toward improving education by offering parents a choice in the public education provided to their children where currently they have none. Instituting multiple school districts would also provide schools with the proper incentives to compete for students by offering a quality education.

FACULTY AND STAFF
NAWA strives to ensure quality educational experiences for its students and campers. That is why NAWA has high expectations and stringent guidelines for staff. From a highly comprehensive application process and background check, to on-going rigorous trainings, staff at NAWA are competent, safe and professional. Since NAWA requires well-rounded staff, trainings are packed with information about new medical procedures, group dynamics, team facilitation, curriculum development, learning disabilities, and outdoor skills. Most Academic Instructors are credentialed and stay current with learning techniques and research. Understanding that each student retains and processes information differently, the Academic Instructors are patient, creative and flexible. They can challenge a student who has solid academic skills and show an unmotivated student that learning can be fun and rewarding. All Wilderness Instructors must either have a Wilderness First Responder or EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) certificate and must have Vertical and Swift Water Rescue certifications. They have many years of experience in backpacking and leading groups on wilderness challenges. Up-to-date computerized tracking of skills and certifications is monitored by the NAWA Safety Committee. It is through this committee that new SOP'S (Standard Operational Procedures) are continuously added to the Safety manual. At NAWA, we understand that it is the staff who make the difference.

Some prayers
are answered
By Rod Thompson
Star-Bulletin HILO God may listen to prayers, but it seems he sometimes likes to read them, too. A written prayer for nuns to teach girls was part of the efforts that brought the Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis to Hilo a bit more than 100 years ago. St. Joseph School will celebrate the arrival of the nuns in ceremonies tomorrow. A centerpiece of the ceremonies will be a small iron statue of St. Joseph which sheltered the written prayer for many years. After Marianist priests opened a boarding school in Hilo for boys in 1848, a feeling grew that there should be a similar school for girls, said former school board Chairman Stephen Woo. Prayers were finally answered with the opening of a school for girls on Sept. 6, 1900.

Keeping Maui's History Alive

Wailuku Historical Notes
by Demaris L. Fredericksen, Trustee
Iao Stream is the largest of the major streams reaching the ocean which originate in the West Maui mountains. It forms one of the "Na Wai Eha" (the Four Waters) valleys of Maui the others being Waikapu, Waiehu and Waihe'e.* The valley is located in the large ahupua'a of Wailuku, and in precontact times, it was a population center and the central place of religious and political power on Maui. In discussing the origin of the name of Iao, Sara Cole relates a story of how Hawaii-loa, the legendary discoverer of Hawaii, embarked on his travels with eight navigators who were called bv the names of the sentinel stars used in voyaging. One of them was named Iao (the star which is Jupiter as the Morning Star). It may be that the valley was named after this navigator. Another possible origin comes from a legend about Maui and his wife Hina, and their beautiful daughter, Iao. She was so lovely that her father allowed no one to approach her. In spite of this, she became the lover of a young warrior, Puuokamoa. When Maui discovered this, he turned the voung man into a pillar of stone as punishment for the transgressions. This stone pillar is the prominent geological feature known as Iao Needle today. Wailuku was the political center under Pi'ilani, a high chief who had succeeded in unifying the districts of Maui by warfare. His two sons, Lono-a-Pi'ilani and Kiha-a-pi'ilani fought for political control after his death. Eventually, with the help of warriors from the Big Island, Kiha-a-pi'ilani became the ruler of Maui.

E-mail this story Posted on: Thursday, November 13, 2003 SHOW BIZ Now boarding: Eddie Kamae's 'ukulele, case By Wayne Harada Advertiser Entertainment Writer 'UKULELE TALK : When entertainer Eddie Kamae and his song-writing wife Myrna were en route home from a trip, they tried to board a flight in San Francisco — with Kamae hand-carrying his 'ukulele. Told by security (and confirmed by Hawaiian Airlines reps) that it was no longer possible to do that without a ticket for the instrument, the Kamaes were forced to purchase a ticket because Kamae would not let the 'ukulele out of his sight. "It was the last ticket on the plane," said Myrna, "and I was hoping the ticket would say 'Ukulele Kamae,' but it said Kamae/Extra Ticket." Their writer pal, Jim Houston , wondered (with pointed curiosity), if 'Ukulele Kamae got a meal in the deal, but Eddie said "it wasn't hungry." A peculiar situation, because an 'ukulele in a case is smaller than most roller bags, but security measures have changed drastically since Sept. 11, and the Kamaes want to warn others about this situation. They attended the Pacific Rim Festival in Santa Cruz, where Kamae performed before a throng of 700 and earned a standing ovation. Yep, he plays a "mean" 'uke, but who'd have thought it "unsafe" to board a plane with its player/owner? ...

Headmaster holds door open to health and education for Vietnam’s ethnic minorities
Mr. Bach Cong Tien, Vice Chairman, People’s Committee of Ba Vi District Photo: Joanne Fairley/CWS By Thomas Abraham "This is Mr. Tien. He’s an ethnic minority member." That’s how the former Vietnamese headmaster was introduced to Church World Service’s representative in Vietnam, Joanne Fairley. It’s hardly the first thing you’re told when meeting someone, but Tien’s minority status is significant for several reasons. Improving services for ethnic minorities has been a CWS goal since 1990. Before that, the organization had already contributed over $8 million to the country’s post-war reconstruction, after resettling over 80,000 Vietnamese refugees. More than a third of CWS Vietnam’s $1.4 million budget for the next three years — funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture — is aimed at educational support for ethnic minority students. Ethnic minorities make up 20 percent of Vietnam’s 77 million people. They speak more than a dozen distinct languages and many dialects. Eleven groups have their own writing systems. Although animistic beliefs are common, a large number are Catholics or Protestants, while the Khmer practice Buddhism and the Cham are Hindu or Muslim. Seventy five percent of Vietnam’s people live below the poverty line, enduring poor educational and social services. Many have been uprooted from ancestral lands in the government’s effort to reunify the country after 1976 and develop agriculture for export.

Volunteer Resources COMMUNITY Writer, Educator, Guide Don Mellor Northwood School; Rock and River Guide Service Don Mellor is the Dean of Students at Northwood School in his hometown of Lake Placid, New York, where he also teaches English and directs the school's Wilderness Skills Program. As a a guide with Adirondack Rock and River Guide Service , he teaches rock climbing to people of all ages. Don is also a successful author, who sticks to the sage advice of writing what he knows. He has written three books on rock climbing: Climbing in the Adirondacks Rock Climbing: A Trailside Guide , and the soon-to-be-published American Rock . In each, Don conveys his knowledge of rock climbing and the joy he derives from the sport. For a quarter-century, Don has been climbing some of America's favorite problems. He has scaled El Capitan and the Diamond at Long's Peak, and he has established more than 100 first ascents in his beloved Adirondacks. He credits much of his early success as an educator and guide to writing about his home region:"In both jobs, my writing has enhanced the opportunities for advancement. My guidebooks to the region gave me a reputation as a local expert, and from this base I moved on to do volunteer work with peregrine falcon restoration and high-angle search-and-rescue with state forest rangers. In essence, climbing has opened up doors in both expected and unexpected ways, and it defines me in my role in the community."
